Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

Katrina and the Waves?

MarniesMummy · 06/03/2011 16:05

Congratulations Sybil and Piste [champagne] [champagne].

I was naughty today and did w8r2.
I just did it as one way or another I feel that I've been unable to do a run and so was just itching to get out there.
My legs feel fine (so far) and it wasn't too bad a run either.

Am off to the park with the wee ones.

Yorkshire - I'm such an old giffer that Florence and the machine didn't do you've got the love, they just covered it!!

I know this is an awful band but what about 'Don't stop moving' by SClub7?Blush

midtowner · 06/03/2011 16:35

hooray hooray how great to hear how well people are doing!

I'm in agony today after running so far and so fast yesterday, but a nice kind of agony as I'm telling myself that it's because I pushed myself a lot harder than I normally do.

Pouring with rain here today so the hike we'd planned is off. So I'm going to do some studying instead.

What about some M People (ignore the ten second advert at the start)?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/03/2011 17:12

We are coming to New York in the summer. Visiting NY, Boston, Washington, Cape Cod.

But DD and I are going to run in Central Park!! You will have to tell me where is best!!

dubaipieeye · 06/03/2011 17:42

Feeling very proud of my threadmates! Go team C25k!

Just googled "best running songs" and here are some ideas I like:

Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend (soooo bouncy, it's a given for my list)

Beyonce - Crazy in Love

KT Tunstall - Suddenly I See (makes me cry in an uplifting kinda way)

Aretha Franklin - Respect

How do these grab you people?

Happy the dog and I kicked the BUM of W3R2 tonight x

dubaipieeye · 06/03/2011 17:54

Oh and Sybil, yep, I really must try the cones. Ventouse delivery really messsed me up!!

Music to Rocky?

GypsyMoth · 06/03/2011 17:57

i like the ministry of sound for running to. makes me energetic just listening to it!

midtowner · 06/03/2011 20:09

piste try this.

When are you coming?

Sybil, do the cones work? I was looking at them yesterday on a pregnancy thread. I think I remember reading on one of the mooncup threads that running while wearing one helped with leakage, but can't find it.

sybilfaulty · 06/03/2011 20:16

The cones do work, but I've never worn them running. I've not had them long. Apparently you need to be standing not sitting to make them work, so I have popped mine in when I am pottering round downstairs when the kids are in bed before DH gets home.

My floor is OK but not great. Can't cough, sneeze (sometimes) blow my nose hard but can laugh. Dribble a bit when running. A tena liner sorts me out (as in panty liner rather than QE2 sized appliance....)

justaminute · 06/03/2011 20:49

Wow, a busy running weekend has been had. Big cheers to those hitting the 5k of running.

I did w5r1 tonight. The second 5 minute run was the toughest, especially as I was running uphill for part of it. This comment made my dh laugh, apparently there are no hills on my route - I beg to differ!

Thanks for discussing leaking too. I wondered if it was just me. Pelvic floor has been poor since dc2. I have been contemplating seeing the gp but I'm just so Blush as ds is now 4 Blush Blush. I think I'll go hard core on the pelvic floor exercises and stock up on tena.

midtowner · 06/03/2011 20:59

Sybil, I meant running with mooncup, not cone Smile. Thanks to everyone for sharing pelvic floors - I was worried when I raised the subject that I'd be the only one with problems.

justaminute - mine are 13 and 9, so I am even more Blush than you Smile

YorkshireCrockpot · 06/03/2011 21:06

Piste- yeah that's them!
MM- I remember the original to You've Got The Love too but I just prefer Flo's!

YorkshireCrockpot · 06/03/2011 21:09

By the way I secretly love S Club too but shhh don't tell anyone. Reach For The Stars is a fave! Blush
Dupai- loving the list!

ClenchedBottom · 06/03/2011 22:55

Wow, everyone is doing so well! Congrats to you all, and a big Wine or Brew, depending on your preference!

Well, I staggered through W4R2 today, managed it properly without stopping with cramp. Felt good to have done it, but eek I'm still finding it hard - that last 5 min run, I feel as if my feet are sort of splatting down in a really flat-footed way due to my utter exhaustion somehow! How do you decide whether to push on or repeat a week to build up more slowly, I wonder? Am still over-thinking it all.....

wileycoyote · 07/03/2011 00:06

Anyone monitoring heart-rate or not?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 07/03/2011 07:24

Morning!
I'm not officially monitoring my heart rate but I know I am recovering more rapidly. After W1R1 my hands shook for ages and my legs felt like lettuce. It is a whole lot better these days!

TheChewyToffeeMum · 07/03/2011 07:53

Hi. I am new to this thread but just wanted to add a bit of encouragement. I did Couch to 5K in March/April last year and yesterday I completed a 10 mile race!!

gormers · 07/03/2011 09:27

Well done piste and sybil - 5k is such an achievement!! Hope you have a little treat planned to celebrate with!

No shame in a bit of S Club!! Am also loving Rocky - it always makes me want to shadow box whilst running!! Also love Don't Stop Me Now by Queen - see what that does for your speed!

Supposed to do w1d3 today, but having only had 4 hours sleep for the 3rd night in a row i'll save it for tomorrow - we know we can get an early night tonight!

Have a lovely sunny day everyone!

midtowner · 07/03/2011 12:43

Morning all,

just back from my first 30 minute run, I covered 3.5 miles in total, but didn't manage to run 5k in 30 minutes. I didn't realise how much I was dawdling until I checked the time on my ipod and there were 3 minutes left and I was 21 blocks from home - that put a spring in my step, but too late! I carried on running for some of the cool down as well. I was out 50 mins instead of 40, which showed me that bridge to 10 k is probably do-able before work and I have no excuse Smile.

The good thing is that I ran 27 minutes without constantly checking how much longer I had to go. It was good to clear my head before starting the working week.

Chewytoffee, thank you for the encouragement. gormers, hope you get some rest

GypsyMoth · 07/03/2011 14:45

i tend to be out for longer....i do the warm up,run, then have a nice long warm down walk for up to 20 mins, just listening to music......great escape from the house and 5 dc.....untill i caught my 14 year old out smoking!!!Shock crept up on her and her mates....their faces!!!!

even more shocked to see a parent out running...she was cringing with embarassment!!

sybilfaulty · 07/03/2011 14:45

Well done Midtowner, glad to hear that bridge to 10k is doable. I think 5k in 30m is going some, but I am sure you will get there.

Am working at home today and feeling terrible. Very upset tummy, headache, tired and generally wobbly. Am not going to be able to get out today for a run and will have to drive to school to get the kids later on. Still, tomorrow is another day Smile.

Keep on running everyone

sybilfaulty · 07/03/2011 14:47

Oh dear, Tiffany, that's not good at all. Don't know who must have been the more shocked!

Respect on the 5 kids though. Only have 3 myself and that seems too many on some days. What ages are yours?

GypsyMoth · 07/03/2011 14:52

16,14....2 girls....3 boys 12,8 and just 3!

16 year old babysits while i run, couldnt do this with out her. occasionally the 12 yera old ds runs with me,but last time he got too tired lol!!

seems i can outrun them now.....how the hell has that happened!!

midtowner · 07/03/2011 18:05

Tiffany, how did your dd cope with the shock?

My boys cringe when they see me in my gear (in fact, at times they won't even walk along the street with me even when I'm not in running gear Smile).

sybil, I hope you feel better soon.

bluebump · 07/03/2011 18:56

Well I found this thread again, I noticed I was 2nd to post on it all those months ago but only brave enough to do my first run tonight! I spent so long trying to find a running buddy and then fretting about what i'd look like running - but I have to say once out there I didn't care what I looked like and it was far more productive being on my own with my podcast! Hurrah! Only negative was that I can't believe it was only 8 mins running in total, it seemed far more.
