dobby2001 · 01/01/2011 20:38

Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

Tigga, your adding Xanadu to your running playlist is at least as important as your schedule, if not more so Smile.

Looks like I may not get a run til tomorrow now. Am feeling rather more disappointed than is usual!

cubscout · 05/03/2011 13:32

Sybil, sorry to hear about your job - rotten luck.

Marnie - come on, 1 more week....

Tulip - I sprained my ankle last lear about 4 weeks into C25K and had to stop for a few weeks. I's fine now, but definately don't compromise healing by going out too soon.

Yorkshire and Clenched - I do the same too! Want to give up at 10 mins, then get second wind, then another (psychological)barrier and by the last couple of minutes I'm getting a bit of extra motivation from somewhere. Reporting back also a BIG incentive to keep going. How did you go on the 20 mins Yorkshire?

No run for me today - I usually enjoy early Saturday mornings, but I have a horrible cold and ds needed to be at football by 9.30. Going to get out tomorrow.

YorkshireCrockpot · 05/03/2011 13:54

Did it!!!! Went out first thing and bloody well did it! Was practically crawling the last 5 minutes but I refused to give in. Was also quite upset almost half way round when I looked at my iPod and thought I'd done 13 mins- no had 13 mins left to do! Didn't twig for fir a while so it was a bit if a shock. Had wondered why I wasn't told I was half way round my the app.
But I did it! Quite glad that there's not a biggie til next week now, phew!
Cubscout- get the vicks rubbed in!

cubscout · 05/03/2011 14:17

Heeey well done! That 20 min run is a huge boost in the overall programme I think.

Even when I'm not running I'm enjoying other peoples runs Wink

midtowner · 05/03/2011 14:36

Morning/afternoon everyone.

Tulip, sorry to hear about your ankle. As others have already said, make sure you rest it properly. Sybil, sorry to hear about the job as well. Did you manage to get out, or was it the hell that is soft play (so glad mine are past that stage, although they both leapt into a ball pool at a museum we recently visited)? Yorkshire and marnie, well done both of you. Tigga glad you are joining us. I hope I haven't missed anyone!

I have W8R3 this afternoon. My plan is to walk to Central Park and do the lower loop as that's 3.1 miles exactly. I'll let you know how I get on.

MarniesMummy · 05/03/2011 15:02

Just read the thread since I last posted (before today) and feel like a complete heel. I posted en route to shower so didn't check what you were all up to.

Some of you have been having tough runs. Keep at it and don't give up. I recently had my iron levels checked as I was very tired and now, 6 days into the iron tablets I have a lot more energy.

Sybil-Sorry to hear about the job, it's a real sign of the times that they don't even send a letter out. Glad to hear the wine therapy helped.

Tulip-Time seems of the essence when you injured but keen, I'd take it slowly as you're probably better off letting the injury heal properly before returning to the program. You may not need to repeat anything at all but you run the risk of a much worse injury if you return too soon.

Gormer-Hello! You sound pretty much like the finished article to me. I really impressed that you did it before with only the aid of a book!!!
My bra is a shock absorber too, since I discovered them (whilst at university many, many aeons ago) I just have never found any other bra provides quite that level of support. Tricky to do up though if it's got a racer back!Blush

Ladies I need your help. For reasons I bore you with later (so you can skip them if you want to) I've decided to reward myself with a running magazine, it doesn't have to be weekly, I think I'd like one aimed at women (should one exist) but only if it is indeed worth going or one (over one just aimed at the runner). So, any recommendations please?

Here's the boring bit. Since I'm size 18 now (yay! for me) I've looked around and realised that most running gear only goes up to size 16, I want to look good in my 'reward for completing the programme gear' so am going to reward myself with the Shred video to do on rest days and a running mag.
I'll stick to my Sainsburys leggings until I'm a confortable 16 and then buy some running gear. (Can you tell I'm excited to be a size that I'm prepared to admit to even if it is a big one?)

By the way, I have no corner, but hey! I think I want a corner! My legs, like christmas hams once are becoming thinner and thinner, so I think there may come a time when a corner may be in order.

Thank you for your kind words Midtowner, I'm really focussing on how much better I look. (I'm at that stage where people are beginning to comment). Amazingly and unlike when I'm dieting, I'm not hung up on food, bogged down (particularly by how I look) but just desperate to get out there to do my next run!!

By the way, my running/powerwalking mates are astounded by what I've achieved so quickly. Thus I am walking around like this Grin.

This program really is a good thing.

Am off to figure how to get 'our song' onto my play list...

midtowner · 05/03/2011 15:42

marnie, well done on the shrinkage :). That's great to hear, and it must be so motivating for you.

Co-incidentally I was reading another thread on this topic this morning, and someone mentioned that Next do running gear up to a 22, so you might be able to find something online? I have to say that having nice stuff, even though it was next to nothing in the sports direct sale, has made me feel good when I go out.

yy to team song by the way - I hadn't been able to look at the youtube clip before as I've been away since I posted on Thursday morning. Also admiring OLJ's arms - I was thinking the other day how it's a shame my flabby arms don't match my slowly-becoming-more-toned-lower-half.

10.40 here and still waiting for dh to get up. I was fully intending a lie in as I'm shattered and still have a bit of a cold, but I woke up just before 9 and my head was buzzing with work and studying stuff (the two are sort of combined, as the study is an MBA, and the module I'm doing is about making a difference at work). Drumming fingers, as I could have gone for a run by now!

midtowner · 05/03/2011 15:45

how about we add this to our team song list for when we're struggling in the first half of the longer runs?

dubaipieeye · 05/03/2011 17:03

Hello people

Did W3R1 yesterday and flippin loved it - had to stop myself going for it again today - didn't as I don't want to get injured - I am just enjoying this all too much Smile. I love the other thread title "we are free when we are running" as that is exactly how I feel. Great stress buster after my day with my 4mo. Tulip I sprained my ankle playing netball just before my wedding (not great as I had a knee length dress and the swelling wasn't pretty!) and needed to recover QUICK - the only advice I can give (as just about everyone else has said, but I love repeating other peeps Wink) is rest rest rest. Be better soon.

I don't just want a corner. I want a shelf, a corner and some hard bits!! Wink

midtowner · 05/03/2011 17:52

well done dubai - I don't remember having the energy to go out running when I had a four month old Smile.

I've been out today, and done W8R3 - yay! not so yay, was that I wasn't really in the right frame of mind and didn't quite complete it...

Dh "are you going out like THAT?" (first time he's seen me in my new running clothes)

Me "yes" (thinking, my Mum said I looked great when I put this on last week, and it's not often she says that, so I can't look that bad)

Dh "aren't you going to cover yourself up?" (to be fair, we've had many a conversation while walking around the park about men in tights, and dh always wears modesty shorts over his)

Me "I've been borrowing your jacket when I've been going out in the mornings" (it comes down mid-thigh)

As it was warm and sunny I decided to go without the jacket. But I hadn't bargained for all the tourists and shoppers, who I decided must all be looking at me and wondering "wtf is she doing dressed like that? :)"

So I started walking too fast, and gave myself ankle and calf cramps, and when it was time to run, ended up running too fast and getting too hot. I got to the park and ran round the track with everyone else dressed like me, and felt great - running fast, pushing myself and so on.

Then (oh the shame) Blush Blush I realised how damp I was feeling and how much I'd been leaking, despite having had a wee before I went out. Thank goodness my tights are black. That stopped me in my tracks. By this time it was 26 mins anyway, so I took my long sleeved top off, tied it around my waist and hobbled home with crampy calves, feet and ankles.

I think I'll have to stick to running first thing, with an empty bladder until I get my pelvic floor sorted (any tips welcome!). I had the same amount of liquid as usual, but as I'd waited a couple of hours it obviously had time to work through my system.

GypsyMoth · 05/03/2011 18:02

marnie....you sound similiar to me...shrinking to a 16 as we speak lol!!

in sainsburys i saw a running for women mag...£3.70 but i bought myself a bottle of Wine instead, may get it on monday. some running gear is in order here too i think!

of to do w7 r2 in a bit.....i'm really enjoying the running, but seem to be running out of village to run around!

GypsyMoth · 05/03/2011 18:04

oh,and parents eve at the upper school was this week....my new fitness meant i could run up the flights of stairs ahead of the other parents and not be out of breath at the top! that felt good...a reward in itself, especially as dd was left puffing behind as well!!

stairs are effortless now. feels so good

MarniesMummy · 05/03/2011 18:29

Midtowner - My running friends both have this problem and swear by Tena Lady. They don't use them all the time but just for running.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/03/2011 19:14

Soooooooo nearly there!!!!

W9R1 is run for 30 mins with the same 5 mins either side. The total distance I did including warm up / cool down was 4.97K

Soooo close!!!

But it felt much much better than my last run. I feel fab
< does happy dance, until collapsing because her legs are actually knackered ! >

GypsyMoth · 05/03/2011 21:49

how do you measure the distance??

RatherBeOnThePiste · 05/03/2011 22:24

I have a separate GPS app on my iPhone. What I do is as I am starting, I set off that app then start my C25K app.

This gps app is called sparkle and it's fab. It was also free!

I was worried that there was an assumption that one would run 30
Minutes and that would be 5K. But in reality I think i am quite slow so I would be running for 30 minutes and not be achieving the distance iyswim?! Anyway. Now I know exactly what I'm doing.

My runs are now just 30 minutes and I am going to have to build up a bit more speed to get to run 5K in that time.

midtowner · 05/03/2011 22:28

Well done piste!

dubaipieeye · 06/03/2011 03:32

Midtowner - snap on the old pelvic floor issue...only way forward is a night time sanitary towel or a tena lady I'm afraid. Then kegel kegel kegel!!

I tend to run in the dark for this very reason Blush

dubaipieeye · 06/03/2011 03:33

Oh and well done piste! Am v jealous.

sybilfaulty · 06/03/2011 09:05

I DID IT! YEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAA!

This morning, I got up at 7 and donned my running outfit (complete with Tena Lady liner, alas. They're very good if you leak a bit as I don't feel anything with them on, but can feel a little bit uncomfortable dribbling round otherwise), walked to the starting point then RAN for 3.2m, non stop, not even for the S circular crossing as it was empty at that time of the morning. I felt a bit sore for the middle mile but grew in confidence as I neared the end and went for it. Took me 38m though, so need to speed up a bit for the real thing. I felt so fab that I came home and made everyone pancakes. Just call me wonderwife.

I have 6 runs left before my race in 2 weeks' time. Do you reckon I could get down to 35m in that time? That would actuall be a running time.

I also need more things on the playlist. I have the team song which i had twice and will add Gloria. What else would keep me going?>

Happy Sunday girls. I did think of our little thread as I went round and was pleased that I could report back on a good run.

Keep on running everyon Smile

sybilfaulty · 06/03/2011 09:07

Dubai, my poor pelvic floor is so shot I use those cones to try and get it back to somem sort of continence. WOrth a shot???

RatherBeOnThePiste · 06/03/2011 09:15

Massive congratulations Sybil!!!
< Piste sets off party poppers and balloons >

Of course you will get quicker!!

cubscout · 06/03/2011 10:48

Sybil - Brilliant, brilliant, well done! . I'm sure you will get to 35 mins.

Piste - 0.03k short???? I think that also qualifies as 5K. .

Marnie and ILT - well done on shrinkage, but much more important is you obvious increace in self esteem, confidence and overall fitness. I noticed M&S also do nice exercise gear in larger stores. I still haven't managed to go shopping - too busy running Grin.

Regarding running times - I am starting my app from when I actually start running after the warm up. I am (very slowly) getting a bit faster - got down to 32.5 mins today for 3.1miles. Breathing felt difficult today as it was cold first thing and I also have a bit of residual cough from a horrible cold.

I tried a new playlist today also. You will be able to see how old I am here Blush but Lisa Stansfield (Change and Little bit of heaven) worked well, also California Dreaming and a bit of Stevie Wonder. I also put a Corrine Bailey Rae song on (Like a Star) which slowed me down a little for a few mins, but did help me get my breath back.LOVE the idea of Gloria Gaynor added to out Team playlist - perfect!

Everyone - have a good week - we may have a few more celebrations.

YorkshireCrockpot · 06/03/2011 13:11

The only way to get pelvic floors back is to do exercises- using cones or weights. Failing that it's tena lady time. Have been fanny crunching like mad since dd2 but I guess it's a matter of time!
Did w6 r1 today at some hordendous hour as dd1 came into our room and announced it was sunny outside so time to get up. It wasn't. She lied.
Need to add Gloria to mine, I'm afraid I can't bear Xanadu! Sorry! The tracks that are getting me round are Walking on Sunshine- who sings it? Can't remember but it's camp fab and You've Got the Love by Florence and the Machine. Love love love those 2! Also a bit of Cee Lo Green is always a bonus!
Lisa stansfield! Cubscout you are ancient! Wink

YorkshireCrockpot · 06/03/2011 13:14

Sybil and piste- well done by the way!
