Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

W1d1 done!!
Ventured out in a sports bra somewhat on the small side, but I did it! Was a bit cold as I dressed as I would have done a year ago for a 10k when I would has built ip much more of a sweat - forgot that my gentle walk / run is quite generating frost beating heat yet!!

But it was great! God, I've missed running! Such a good feeling, and makes the rest of the day so much easier now post a running high! Have to fight the temptation to not run every day and go too quickly causing an injury!

Not sure I have anything resembling a corner yet, (more of a shelf in that too tight bra!! Hopefully I was speeding by so quickly no-one noticed!!)

midtowner · 03/03/2011 12:12

Hi gormers - glad you enjoyed getting back into your trainers.

I'm just back from W8D2. Minus 6 here - my doorman sent me back upstairs for a hat when I went down this morning. He also asked if I was doing the half marathon in April Grin

sybilfaulty · 03/03/2011 12:13

Well done Gormers! I have a Shock Absorber bra too as I am large in the boob dept (30/32FF) and it tethers them down fine. Bit sweaty afterwards tho (sorry if that's oversharing).

Just nipped out for a quick one and it was SO much easier than yest, even though it's so cold. Made my 2.85m in 30m so am getting there. Only stopped at 28m to cross the South Circular so am really pleased.

sybilfaulty · 03/03/2011 12:13

Midtowner, you have a doorman! You are like SJP in Sex and City. Fantastic!

midtowner · 03/03/2011 12:26

There's a whole team of doormen, handymen and concierges. It's like having lots of Dads around, especially when you roll in late and bit squiffy (not that I'd ever do that of course Wink).

Imagine getting paid to push a revolving door for people!

happypotter · 03/03/2011 13:39

Ooh I miss my doormen!! We were a couple of blocks off Times Square for three months when we moved over last year in a corporate apartment set up and all the men there were lovely. Our ds used to high five them all each morning.

For some strange reason I decided to go out last night for half an hour, not listening to the podcast, just seeing how it went (and to try and figure out how my new nike chip and nike plus app work) It was very cold and what seemed like an Arctic wind blowing. I didn't do well at all.

But Xanadu came on and helped with the last few minutes. I think we all should put Xanadu on our music players. It can be like 'Our Song' :-)

Good luck all those heading out for a run today.

cubscout · 03/03/2011 14:58

I want a doorman! For my modest 3 bed semi in the SE. I'm trying to picture midtowner and happy waving at thier doorman while I negotiate with plumbers to fix my central heating Envy
Well done for getting our gormers although you sound like a pretty professional to me! Sybil - two days in a row? I'll bet both you and Piste manage 5k on your next run.

Still no Sports Direct for me (and now no spare cash as the plumber is charging by the hour and he's been here nearly 3....eeeek).I'm waiting until Sat morning to go out again as I have a bit of a cold.

Good luck for the next coulpe of days everyone.

sybilfaulty · 03/03/2011 16:07

Ok then, if we are having a team song, go

RatherBeOnThePiste · 03/03/2011 16:10

Lol - I will get our Team Song Xanadu and add it to my mix - it will make me smile and hopefully inspire me!!!!

Livinginoz · 03/03/2011 22:18

Good morning everyone.

I did W5R1 this morning, think I must have read it wrong as I was all geared up to do some 8 min runs and they were all 5s! Next one is 2 x 8 mins right?
I'm going to start doing Power Yoga tomorrow to try and tone up my flabby bits! Not noticing any corners on my bum yet!

I got my sports bra from Bravissimo before we left the UK, not sure of the brand, but its the underwired one, as I'm a 36G Blush

dubaipieeye · 04/03/2011 02:38

Was supposed to run last night but DH went on the lash to a work do and I was not a happy bunny. Now gearing up for R1W3 when DS naps this morning. Feeling a bit tired as DH forgot his keys and pretended to be a burgler by climing over our fence and clattering around at 2.30am. The fool! Doing a yoga warm up to get me started.

tulip27 · 04/03/2011 13:07

No No No No No-
Sprained my ankle falling off a slope in the garden 3 days ago and its still all swollen. Race days is in 4 weeks and only up to 4 miles, need to be at 9 miles by 4 weeks.
HELP !!!!!!!!!!

ClenchedBottom · 04/03/2011 13:53

Oh no, tulip!
That's rotten luck. But surely, there's no point trying to do anything until your ankle is better, or you run the risk of making it much worse. not sure what we can suggest, really? Sorry!

ClenchedBottom · 04/03/2011 13:53

Didn't mean that to sound glib, I hope YKWIM even if I can't say it properly........

tulip27 · 04/03/2011 15:27

Its so disheartening. How quickly do you think it will take to return to couch potatoe?
Mabye I will try spinning tomorrow instead.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 04/03/2011 16:35

Be careful that yourfoot heals properly before you attempt to run on it or you could make it worse.

Several people have had injuries that have put their running on hold. They have then gone back to a previous run to start again. Hopefully one of them will be able to give you advice soon.

GypsyMoth · 04/03/2011 16:51

did week6 run 1 last night,it was fine! was tempted to switch Laura off and put my own music on,but i didn't.

i already have xanadu on my ipod

whats this bridge thing? am already wondering what i'll do after couch to 5k.....feel like i'll still be running, but wont push myself enough,so it may tail off. dont want that happening!!

sybilfaulty · 04/03/2011 18:05

I have just found out that I did not get a job I went for - a lovely email, not even a phone call. I have virtually inhaled my glass of wine, and all plans of running tonight are shelved (it is too cold anyway and I have been for 3.5 runs this week already).

Maybe I am not such a committed runner after all.

ClenchedBottom · 04/03/2011 18:19

Ah sybilf - rotten luck about the job. And particularly rotten that they didn't even have the grace to phone you to let you know!
Anyway, in these highly exceptional circumstances, I think it's very appropriate to have an evening of wine therapy instead. Maybe plan a run over the weekend, and picture that each footfall is on the face of whoever was daft enough not to want you to work for them?

I pretty much got through W4R1, had to stop halfway through the last 5 min run to stretch out a crampy calf muscle. I did find it really hard going, but considering that I had been very anxious that I wouldn't be able to do it at all, I'm feeling more positive, if that makes any sense at all? I think I'm over-thinking things, as I'm getting nervous about not being able to do it. But then the sense of achievement even at not-quite-completely doing it was amazing!

YorkshireCrockpot · 04/03/2011 21:48

Ah tulip, it's defiantly better to make sure your ankle us better before you start out again. You don't want to cause more damage, it's not worth it. When you feel ok to start then redo a week or two, whatever is comfortable for you. I havn't had an injury yet but I've redone weeks due to me and dds being poorly (cp, colds) and life in general getting in the way but i'm finally at end of week 5 and loving it. Get plenty of RICE girl!! (rest, ice, compression, elevation)

Sybil here's another Wine for you. Sorry you didn't get the job and it sucks that they didn't even phone you, this modern world huh? Here's another one! Wine

Off for the 20 minuter tomorrow- but worried but up for it Grin

YorkshireCrockpot · 04/03/2011 21:49

Sybil sod running for tonight- Wine!!

YorkshireCrockpot · 04/03/2011 21:54

Clenched, that's the thought process I go through too:
can I do it,
what if...,
is it over yet?,
gonna have to stop soon,
nearly done it- come on!
woo hoo! Done it!
Need to tell all the c25kers!

sybilfaulty · 05/03/2011 12:01

Thanks girls. I duly took Dr Clenched's prescribed wine therapy and now feel much cheerier. Am waiting for DH to come back with DS then am off for a quick run before lunch. Soft play this afternoon. Give me strength.

MarniesMummy · 05/03/2011 12:32

w8r1 tick.

Easy peasy, simple pimple.
If only it were even half that simple all of the time.

dawntigga · 05/03/2011 12:44
