dobby2001 · 01/01/2011 20:38

Thought i would start a new thread so al those wanting to start or return to running in 2011 had somewhere to post Smile

I have NEVER tried running before so very very nervous about starting, but thought couch to 5k sounded a good method of getting into it.

I am off to bluewater tomorrow to buy running shoes - any recommendations???

Come on girl, you can do it. Get out there, take it slow if you have to. I'm here when you get back!

Sybil - you've gone quite. Have you been out for 25 mins yet?

cubscout · 09/02/2011 17:27

Or even 'quiet' sybil. All that running has relieved my brain of vital blood.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/02/2011 18:14

yaaaaaaaayyyyyy wooooooohooooooooooooooo

I only bloody well did it.

But I am totally trashed and have legs made of lettuce now.

My gps says 3.4 miles, well it felt like a hundred!
As it got harder I kept thinking of you Cubscout and how you'd just achieved 25. It honestly kept me going.

I am so delighted.
But everyone please do know that if i can do this then honestly anyone can
Truly.

We must all keep each other going!!

Shower now then school meeting at 8.
< Piste knows how to celebrate in style! >

YorkshireCrockpot · 09/02/2011 18:21

Ladies big fat WELL DONE! Grin
Just waiting for dh to get in so I can get out too...

cubscout · 09/02/2011 18:38

Oh oh oh

Brilliant, just brilliant. Well done Piste Don't you think it's the great thing about this thread, that we can keep each other going. Having someone to share the victories and encourage us all when it's hard.

And we can all do it.

Good luck to all runners later tonight and tomorrow.

sybilfaulty · 09/02/2011 19:35

Cub, I didn't get a chance today as I got home too late and DH out tonight so no chance of slipping out later. Will go tomorrow. Well done on your 25 mins, that's wonderful, you are an inspiration.

Rather, 3.4miles is a huge distance! A 5k is 3.1m in old money! Wow! You must be fast. Am very impressed.

I have a bit of a lull in my work now, so am going to try to fit in at least 3 per week, if not a bit more.

Keep on running everyone.

sybilfaulty · 09/02/2011 19:36

Oh, and glass of Wine all round. We deserve it!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/02/2011 19:41

That should have said 3.4K!

I am feeling it now though. Cor.
I absolutely agree On the support on here cubscout. The thought that you had done it really did motivate me tonight, from actually going to actually not stopping Grin

Still a way to go to 5K. And certainly a long way in terms of improving style and speed and stamina!

A much welcome day off!
Good luck to all runners. We really can do this you know.

midtowner · 09/02/2011 19:49

Well done everyone! I have the 20 mins coming up on Friday morning, when I'll be jet-lagged and feeling bleugh, but I will think of you all as I lumber around SW wherever it is that my friends live.

Lizs, as you say, it's the getting out that's more important than the time ran or distance travelled. It must be better than staying on the sofa Smile.

ILT - well done on the weightloss! Great stuff!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/02/2011 19:51

Lol at the notion I go quickly!!
I really dont.

justaminute · 09/02/2011 19:53

Just in from run 2, week 1. As I started off I thought "oh this is easy perhaps I should skip to week 2" (I had got to week 6 in the Summer). However as I finished I was mighty relieved I stayed at week 1, my legs are throbbing now Blush.

Uber impressed at all you long distance runners!

YorkshireCrockpot · 09/02/2011 20:50

Just got in too. Did week 3 and I found it fine so am really pleased with myself. Going to attempt week 4 at the weekend and see. I can always do a little more walking if needs be. I'm sure half of this is about getting your head in the right place.
Welcome back to blighty in advance MT!

GypsyMoth · 09/02/2011 21:03

yes,welcome back!!

the daffodils are coming up!nights are slightly lighter.....i'll be running in daylight soon

dobby2001 · 09/02/2011 21:10

Hello darlings Grin everybody is doing soo well! congratulations to those running all those long distances - i am totally in awe!

I am ashamed to say I have not been out for a week Blush. i have had a family crisis - not mine but need to support another family member through a tough time, have been feeling rough - although am not sure if thats a result of NOT excercising Hmmand to be honest i am struggling with motivation.

I am hoping to get out friday morning and might try getting up as the mornings are getting lighter to run earlier as i feel the nights are harder for me. Sad

ClenchedBottom · 09/02/2011 21:31

Ooooh you're all doing so well!

Unlike me - I did my first run on Sunday (and I'm starting at the verrrrrry beginning, am about as fit as a toad - actually, that could be see
n as insulting toads) and was due to go out again today...... but my most of a big toenail has fallen off, and my foot feels a bit fragile so I didn't go. It's not a running injury, I bashed it and shattered the nail last week, but although it was spilt and horrid it stayed on - until today.

So now I feel useless. And my toe hurts. And I've probably been mean to toads......

maclover135 · 09/02/2011 21:43

Dobby I've had to have a week off as well - illness, injury, DS's birthday ... Went out on Monday after a 7 day break and it nearly killed me. I went back out this morning and it was a bit better. Still can't get past running for more than 5 mins at a time.

Like many others, this thread is keeping me going - am very impressed at all those now running for 20 mins plus.

MarniesMummy · 09/02/2011 21:53

Sad Sad Sad Just typed and deleted it all twice! What kind of idiot am I?

Sad Anyway, I'm back from w5r2 and the Eiger bested me. I couldn't make myself run to the top for 8minutesSad I stopped after 4.5-5 minutes. When I felt like running again Laura piped up that there were only 60seconds left so I couldn't be bothered.Sad

I completed the second 8minute run and as a pennance made myself run home.Sad
I think it needs to be redone. I hate that hill!!(and it clearly hates me) Should I go tomorrow?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 09/02/2011 22:19

Loving the idea of being as fit as a toad!

YorkshireCrockpot · 10/02/2011 07:23

MM- get out there don't let that hill beat you!

Clenched- your toenail fell off?!?! Ouch! Don't be disheartened it is hard but it does get easier- look at the others for inspiration, we all started at the same level ( fit as toads !!) and now look- 25 minutes non stop! I think we all actually enjoy going out too and that's the really important bit- getting off our toad like bums and doing something. I'd restart when your toe isn't sore.

YorkshireCrockpot · 10/02/2011 07:32

Dobby- welcome back, I so prefer mornings, no one around apart from the odd dog walker and you feel good all day.
Macglover- I can't do week4 yet either, glad it's not just me!

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/02/2011 07:45

< Ponders >

I think I run like a toad!

I am hoping to improve this!

happypotter · 10/02/2011 19:22

Can I join you please? You all are doing really well!
I'm doing the C210 and started week 3 this morning but the podcast I'm using seems to be working at a slower pace than some of you have been doing (wk1 was run 30 secs, walk 4, wk2 was run 1min walk 4, now week 3 is run 1 and a half min, walk 3 and a half)
I would love to be a 'runner' but it is just not a natural state for me!! I just can't seem to breathe properly at all and I watch everyone else on the treadmill running and they don't seem to be gagging for air!!
I'm doing a 5K race at the end of March and for some stupid reason have entered myself in for a half marathon in October (why why why why?)
We moved to New York last March and I'm pretty homesick at the moment so thought the half marathon would give me something to focus on. At the current rate, they will either need to change the length of the half marathon or I will need to get a new pair of legs!!!

Keep going everyone!!!!

sybilfaulty · 10/02/2011 20:12

Welcome Happy, good to have you on board. Our midtowner is also based in NYC, though she is actually in Sarf London right now.

I don't think it matters how fast or otherwise you are going, but if you want a different podcast many of us are on Robert Ullrey's podcasts from www.coolrunning.com and others use someone called Laura on the NHS website. So long as you keep on going, I dont' think progress matters as you are getting better each week. 5k at end of March is eminently doable.

I am cross tonight as I had asked one of my babysitters to pop across the road for an hour so I could run when the kids were in bed. Sadly she got the date wrong and did not pitch, so I was a sorry sight in my running kit on the stairs, and am now going to be in kit with glass of wine! Grrr. Tomorrow is another day.

Keep on running everyone.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 10/02/2011 20:15

happypotter - we have another New Yorker on this thread!! She's called midtowner. She's visiting the UK this week ( am I right?) but will be going back. Do not feel lonely any more Grin

c210 makes me feel Confused
I will get to 5K but cor it's a big effort!!

Yes - keep going everyone!

happypotter · 10/02/2011 20:26

Ah I thought midtowner was in NY but I wasn't 100% sure. I bet she's having a fab time back home.
To be honest, I just got the podcast I'm using as it was the one my friend did. It lets me use my music on itunes and the podcast 'talks' over it. I know on some of the other ones you have to listen to the music that comes with it, am I right?
Sybil - It sounds like you are in the running equivalent of 'all dressed up and nowhere to go'! Hope you get out tomorrow.
We've got visitors from the UK this weekend so not sure if I'll be able to get out until Monday. Just off to JFK!!
