We have to rejoin.

We can't afford not to.

The Conservative Party can do it increments like they do most things, and if the horses get frightened wheel Boris Johnson out to tell Brexit fans that we haven't rejoined at all.

Peregrina · 12/02/2023 21:27

Just don't see rejoining ever happening, even the Libdems aren't for rejoining and the population certainly isn't.

i certainly think that the people I know would vote to rejoin tomorrow if they were asked, but neither of the two main parties is asking our opinions.

imho unless there is a long term view in the UK pop. and its politics to rejoin, the EU wont have us back.

An opinion poll of 40% vs 48% with 12% don't knows, just isn't going to cut it with Brussels.

As you say, there is no political will to even consider a CU or SM with either parties, let alone a ballot... think the LDs have said better relations then in time apply to join SM... but no time scales.

I think no party wants the next GE to be a Brexit dominated one.

Don't think any political party cares about whether the UK can't afford it or not... they will all be ok.

verdantverdure · 12/02/2023 21:59

The election after next will be a Brexit election in my opinion.

Very few people will admit to wanting Brexit by then.

The downward spiral can't be allowed to continue.

BlurryVision · 12/02/2023 22:35

I really hope so VerdantVerdure

SerendipityJane · 13/02/2023 07:38

I think no party wants the next GE to be a Brexit dominated one.

The problem is as long as Farage, Tice et al are free to speak, and you have glory seekers like the BoTruss gestalt, Brexit will be the only thing the next election is about.

One of "project fears" lesser remembered points was that Brexit would jam the UKs politics up for decades. You ain't seen nothing yet.

UK chipmakers are threatening to move their operations to the US or Europe if the British government doesn't get its act together and release its long-awaited semiconductor strategy.

& its not just the existing semiconductor industry but also expansion into the higher end 'chips we would need if China takes back Taiwan, we also lack the skilled engineers and workers too.

Otherwise we will be dependent on other countries supply us and they will prioritise their own sectors first.... if only there was a nearby organisation where knowledge funding skills could be shared more easily?

Oh well.

The secret Brexit summit was an exercise in self-delusion
Now the government finds itself struggling to get from day to day, managing the inevitable, foreseeable, and indeed very much foreseen consequences of its own actions

Just started "Clarksons Farm 2". No holding back about Brexit there.

And, yes, I know that to someone from Chipping Norton, having their child born in Oxford does make them a "foreigner"..

Interesting suggestion that a diminished SNP is a boon for Labour as it makes it the quickest way to dump the Tories both sides of the border.

Hmmmm

The DUP's antics come as no surprise. They dragged NI into a civil war that lasted 30 years and caused untold misery because they refused to allow civil rights for the Catholic minority in NI. They have absolutely no interest in the Assembly or the peaceful co existence it seeks to develop. The siege mentality is their comfort zone.

They are willing to go to any lengths to get what they want in any given situation, or stop another group from progressing, and come from a militant tradition in British history that doesn't rule out armed insurrection against the Westminster government (see gun running 1914, and the Curragh Mutiny).

Their bigotry and intransigence have been encouraged and enabled by British governments since the campaign for Home Rule, and for hundreds of years before that. They have no reason to believe they won't get away with this, but maybe they should look at how they're polling. There surely must come a point where stunts like this cause people across all parties in NI to feel they are being betrayed by these idiots.
