I couldn't read more than a couple of sentences of that link because it was behind a paywall but here is the same story from the Guardian.www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/mar/21/jamaican-campaigners-call-for-colonialism-apology-from-royal-family

A crucial meeting between Western leaders will not include a representative from the UK, it has been revealed, following Boris Johnson’s controversial remarks likening the war in Ukraine to Brexit.

Either way, it's a sign the times they are a changing. One trip cancelled, protests at every appearance (not that we'd ever be allowed to know - I notice the story is strangely absent from the BBC ...). All we need is a comedy clip of Boris likening the experience of slavery to Brexit, and we've pretty much got a full house.

They could send Megh... oh no they can't.

Let's just carry on and pretend colonialism and slavery never existed.

To be fair to H&M they tried to acknowledge the past and address imperialism/colonialism. But apparently the queen or rather the people around her were absolutely clear that this was not to happen as the commonwealth is one of which the Queen's 'most proud'.

But hey, if this contributes to the demise of the monarchy then it's all good.

Jamaica: Government ‘has already begun’ process of removing Queen as head of state

Go Jamaica!

So remember those promises for retaining and even elevating food standards etc? I seem to recall this being one of the Brexit bonuses…

Shocking then to hear our Brexit minister Jacob Rees Smugg was talking yesterday to a parliamentary committee about wanting to get rid of ‘gold plated’ EU standards. He’d like to see lower car safety standards, allow pesticides and lower imported food standards. So we can be clear that when he means benefits, he means for businesses, not citizens.

DuncinToffee · 22/03/2022 18:50

Louise must be thrilled

EU standards are dead, long live Indian standards!

ChiswickFlo · 22/03/2022 19:23

US food standards are pretty shocking tbh

Well, why should we be in on the meeting, it's what our country voted for, for the 'U'K to become an irrelevance on any stage. We are idiots.
ChiswickFlo · 22/03/2022 19:34

Exactly

AuldAlliance · 22/03/2022 22:38

Meanwhile, BJ's remarks about plucky freedom fighter Brexiteers have resonated far and wide.
Here's Poroshenko:

Inflation now at 6.2% (highest in 30 years)

Cost £42 to 2/3rds fill my petrol tank yesterday

This weeks grocery delivery is £130 (normal everyday items, nothing luxurious)

From April this household will be paying £1200 more a year NI, God knows how much more in energy costs (talk of a 35% increase again in October..), food prices are insane, and I'm starting to walk more so I'm not using the car...

Over a quarter of three households in my county will be in fuel poverty - I can't imagine how much worse it will be in the so called red wall seats/NE/NW.

Even Osborne initiated a windfall tax on oil suppliers...why isn't this govt doing that?
yes, yes, I know why

As a historian I'm very concerned about where this is heading. I forsee a dumping of the FT parliament act, more trashing of the economy to line tory pockets (10% Inflation and IR..) by end of year so De Pfeffle will call a GE and fuck off humming like spam face Cameron.

THEN all hell will break loose.

No opposition to speak of so a mishmash coalition will have to be formed with no other goal than to wrest power from its other members.

We are witnessing the start of the permanent decline of this once great nation. The Argentina of the 21st century.

I'm pleased to see the demos against the royals latest visit. Queens Kings, princesses...they should stay in fairytales not 21st century world.

All in all, we are fucked my friends.

Absolutely right.

He's a fucking disgrace.

I'm awaiting the comments about EU membership being akin to slavery next...

ChiswickFlo · 23/03/2022 07:38

Ah, poor de pfeffle...

He really thought this would be his churchill moment, didn't he?

We are what he and his ilk have made us...an irrelevance.

Peregrina · 23/03/2022 08:56

I don't know - we might manage to get a decent Coalition out of it, as with the Wartime one, which laid the foundations of what we were proud to think of as a Welfare state. (When welfare meant looking after each other, not poor people being demonised as scroungers.)

Can't disagree.

I rather suspect that this will have come as a surprise to the Duke and Duchess - I don't get the impression that either question very much. Still if a girl gets to wear pretty clothes, what does it matter? Grin

I'd argue that the wartime politians were of a rather different calibre to the current dross

This may well be, but I suspect that there are MPs who would be able to rise to the occasion if asked. The problem at the moment is that the qualification for being in Government is to be a True Brexiter, and we have seen how few arguments they can put forward in support of their case.

I fully expect that quite a lot of Brexiters will chose to clear out at the next election. We shall see.

Iceland supermarket boss Richard Walker says some food banks are rejecting potatoes and root veg because people ‘can’t afford the energy to boil them’

Reminds me of the 'poverty' threads on here when posters keep promoting lentils and completely disregard the cooking time.
But Sunak understands.....

AuldAlliance · 23/03/2022 09:53

Bloody hell. Letter to the FT from former defence attaché in Russia, saying warnings were given about Putin years ago, but ignored because all that mattered was the City and the UK's status as safe haven for dirty money:
twitter.com/ruskin147/status/1506539085669748744?s=20&t=lYkHXinAF_NVUrS_IErwnA

See, there are competent, qualified people around. They just are not listened to.

5 months after the EU but UK steel and aluminium exports to the US are now tariff free thanks to a newly secured resolution between both nations

Yes. We have clients who cook on camping stoves.

Chris Grey on the P&O sackings and Chris Grayling

Development in how the P&O story subtly interacts with Brexit. In Feb 2018 Chris Grayling changed the law so shipping firms had to give notice of sackings to the country where the boat was registered, not UK (that wasn't a 'Brexit freedom', it hadn't happened then). But
... what may be forgotten is that in Jan 2019 "P&O announced it will be re-flagging its entire UK-registered fleet to Cyprus ahead of Brexit, in order to keep its tax arrangements within the European Union". It seemed like another cost of Brexit.
At the time P&O said "We have no plans to make any other changes, including the terms and conditions of any of our seafarers, as a result of the new arrangements"
This doesn't mean Brexit enabled the sackings - Grayling's law change and the re-flaggings preceded and didn't require Brexit. But the re-flaggings were overtly a response to Brexit and once they happened 'Grayling's law' became relevant to the boats concerned.
