Hi,

Longtime lurker and poster (under various nn) on Westminstenders and these threads.

I'm afraid the other thread op pissed me off a lot so here's another option for those of us that want one.

Wishing you all a Happy Christmas and good luck for 2022.

There are actually some gems in Frostie's letter: implementing the referendum result, stunning electoral win, exit from the EU, Brexit is now secure.

anyone else hear another nail in Boris coffin with that ? Basically it's "I've done my job ...."

DuncinToffee · 19/12/2021 12:40

Grin David Schneider

“Brave brave Lord Frosty…
When reality reared its ugly head
Like Davis and others he bravely fled
Yes, brave Lord Frosty chose to split
When sunlit uplands turned to shit
He chickened out and then resigned
Because of the deal he made and signed
Brave brave brave Lord Frosty”

Frostie the no-man ...

I see there's a COBRA meeting at 5pm, and the leaders of the devolved nations will attend. Either BJ is resigning or they will agree more restrictions. Suspect I'll be disappointed Wink

But not immediate restrictions I hope. After all we need this omicron to spread surely ?

If nothing else, threads like this allow news that we know won't be reported widerly to be circulated.

www.politico.eu/article/brexit-protocol-us-uk-steel-deal-johnson-biden/

LONDON — Three of Britain’s former Northern Ireland secretaries are warning Prime Minister Boris Johnson to sort out the wrangling over Brexit or continue to be snubbed by Joe Biden on steel tariffs.

Ex-Cabinet ministers from across the political divide urged the prime minister to take heed of his U.S. counterpart’s protective approach to Northern Ireland, which faces turmoil over its post-Brexit trade arrangements.

Biden has been refusing to negotiate with Britain over punishing Donald Trump-era steel and aluminum tariffs despite doing a deal with the EU on the issue. Reports suggest he is also preparing to talk to Japan, which wants its own agreement.

(contd ...)

in Cutnpasteit'sovers stead, I shall note that the description of Biden "refusing to negotiate" may be hyperbole. Alternatively it could be spot on, with no mainstream outlet daring to use it.

If we follow the famous DGR res ipsos loquitor way of looking at things then all I will say is that the EU has a deal with the US, and the UK hasn't yet even had a discussion.

Liz Truss new Brexit Minister.

Liz Truss - out of her depth in a puddle.

DGRossetti · 19/12/2021 18:33

@Sostenueto

Liz Truss new Brexit Minister.
Well that's her career over then.
Lonelycrab · 19/12/2021 18:38

Vacant clueless look behind the eyes-check
Ability to spout meaningless sound bites-check
Will stand proudly next to obviously awful deals-check

Sounds perfect for the job.

pointythings · 19/12/2021 18:39

@Sostenueto

Liz Truss new Brexit Minister.
Sounds to me like someone has seen her as a potential threat and is sidelining her into an impossible brief. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person. And the big silver lining is that this is going to give Dead Ringers sooooo much great material!

@Jason118

Liz Truss - out of her depth in a puddle.
That's a joke right?
jgw1 · 19/12/2021 18:41

Sorry quoted the wrong post.
Meant to quote

Liz Truss is the new Brexit Minister

DGRossetti · 19/12/2021 19:30

Sounds to me like someone has seen her as a potential threat and is sidelining her into an impossible brief. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person.

It would be interesting to know how they managed to separate her from her advisors to able to get her to swallow it.

I believe the term doing the rounds is "Brexit Muggins", minister

Of course, if Brexit is done, why do we need a "Brexit Minister" ? As no media pundits are asking.

Really her role is really just UK negotiator with the EU - I bet the EU doesn't have a "Minister for Brexit ...

Why do they think it is acceptable to have wine if it is a work meeting?
Although perhaps Boris would make better decisions if he was drunk in charge of the country?

Surely Minister for arguing with the EU when the government needs a distraction from its latest incompetence to please the gammon. Presumably Truss figures that the Tory party will cheer her every pointless argument with the EU?
Peregrina · 19/12/2021 19:39

This effectively sounds like the Brexit Department being wound down, because this surely is the sort of remit a Foreign Secretary should have?

codexa · 19/12/2021 19:48

Someone needs to establish what exactly the Brexit Minister is negotiating with EU about. Anyone have any idea? NIP is going to survive despite a few grumbles from DUP aimed within earshot of their more rabid members. So what is left then?

Peregrina · 19/12/2021 19:52

Isn't the real purpose of the Brexit Minister to speak to the Domestic Agenda? How we are standing up to the EU bullying us, blah, blah? Even though there is enough evidence to suggest that the public are getting a bit sick of all this.
