Westministenders: Its the waiting that kills you

Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

The past few days have been glorious for some much-needed good news Smile

ListeningQuietly · 09/11/2020 13:37

The Americans revolted in 1776 and have been revolting ever since Wink

When in Dublin I found it very funny seeing the American tourists coming to discover their roots being quite sniffy at DH and I because of our accents
he's actually a descendant of a guy who made it to Liverpool after the famine and y'all know about me
and the lovely Irish staff especially the Sri Lankan Irish maitre d taking the piss out of the Yanks at every opportunity.
When we checked out I showed them my passports and they fell about Grin

All relationships between nationalities are nuanced
that is the thing the ERG forgot

Dontlickthetrolley · 09/11/2020 13:41

Just been announced there's a press conference at 5pm, place your bets now for the time it actually starts.... 5.17pm here or maybe next Monday can't decide between the 2!

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 13:43

So Boris is caught in the jaws of a vice ... one side the completely bananas ERG for whom no deal is an article of faith and they will destroy the Tory party and Boris too if they don't get it.

I would find it difficult to shed too many tears if either of those things happened.

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 13:44

Is there a Rugby match which Bozo would prefer to watch first? This surely will dictate the time he actually appears.

Well there's the vaccine flap - he'll want to get his face all over that.

Also 6 days before any deal with the EU needs to go to heads of state. Is he going to try and pull a fast one on the ERG ?

Pan2 · 09/11/2020 13:51

Announcing a request to the EU for an extension, and launching the required legislation at Parliament for it.

DGRossetti · 09/11/2020 13:55

I don't that that's necessary. Just make sure any deal has an "implementation period" starting 1/1/2021 with an end date "by mutual agreement", and sell it as the UK beating the EU.

At the end of the day, it will be whatever it takes for Boris to be PM tomorrow - as it has been these past 11 months.

Is Marcus Rashford being wheeled out for the presser?

Why would he want to be seen with a loser ?

He's done more good by needling the government than by sucking their thumbs ....

I do not think that even Johnson would be so stupid as to risk sharing a lectern with somebody over whom he has no financial hold Grin

As another who is brown, may I add how much I despair at even the slightest association with Patel, Braverman, Sharma or Sunak, in no particular order of uselessness, but I applaud Kamala Harris. I'm not a socialist or Labour. Just despair of UK's fate over next 10 years or so.

What. The. Fuck. Is. Wrong. With. These. People.

John Redwood sends 'warning letter' to Joe Biden over Brexit

www.theneweuropean.co.uk/brexit-news/westminster-news/conservative-mp-john-rewood-warns-joe-biden-6215718

The Brexiteer also told the new leader of the country that the election result also demonstrated that Donald Trump had "considerable support for his Republican vision" with 70 million votes.

he also claimed there was a "larger percentage mandate" for the EU referendum result.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 09/11/2020 14:55

John Redwood is another liar in the same mould as Trump and his ilk. Does anyone actually take any notice of him, though?

And they said Remainers were bad losers.

Wasn't 49% "considerable support"

All Redwood is doing is confirming Bidens 2016 analysis. I suspect it's unlikely to shift the moving finger. (Although I can see a finger stopping writing briefly to send a message).

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 15:24

Is Redwood another one challenged by arithmetic? By my reckoning Biden has got 54% of the electoral college. That is greater than the 52% that Leave got.

Clavinova · 09/11/2020 15:25

John Redwood sends 'warning letter' to Joe Biden over Brexit

It doesn't read anything like a warning letter to me;

Dear Mr President elect

Congratulations on your victory. Gaining more votes than any previous President and getting above 50% of the popular vote gives you a clear mandate for your policy of uniting the USA.

Your opponent succeeded in boosting his vote by an impressive 8 million extra votes, demonstrating considerable support for his Republican vision of growth promoted by lower taxes, putting America first when dealing with China, promoting peace in the Middle East, and protecting individual liberties. It is a pity he has chosen to query the election outcome without setting out convincing evidence of the voter fraud he alleges. It makes your task of uniting America more difficult. The U.K. respects democratic mandates and agrees with you that the results of counting all the valid votes are the sacred instruction of the people which all true democrats respect. ...

The U.K. looks forward to working with you as President ...

I must stress that the U.K. does uphold the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. As we leave the EU we have no plans to impose a hard border between the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland, contrary to false EU rumours. It is the EU which seems to be planning new border controls on their side of the border which you may like to take up with them. The UK’s EU referendum gave us a larger percentage mandate for exit than your own convincing win, so you will understand the importance to us of becoming a truly independent country again on 1 January next year. As such we can be of more assistance in world trade and foreign policy matters, and look forward to working with you where our views and policies align.

Yours sincerely

John Redwood

All of a sudden the losing side is "a considerable number" Smile

Not it's not, John. Do you want some lessons on democracy and the will of the people. Happy to provide them. In Welsh too.

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 15:34

I think Biden's Government will be perfectly capable of reading the GFA and subsequent legislation and will be able to work out for themselves whether its the EU or the UK which is being awkward over the Irish Border. I notice he is silent on the matter of the UK wanting to rip up international treaties.

As already said, he is arithmetically challenged - maybe a quick lesson on % is required John? People can find them tricky.

But I am enjoying seeing them squirming and trying to rewrite their personal histories.

DGRossetti · 09/11/2020 15:38

I'm sure George Mitchell is already on it.

Precisely!

Oh bless !
Does that nice Mr Redwood not realise that there are still millions of votes to be counted ?

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 15:43

It's just possible that all those millions of votes still to be counted could go to Trump. In which case, Trump might have won the popular vote. But then, how would Redwood square that with a Trump win over Clinton? The likely answer is an attack of amnesia.

DGRossetti · 09/11/2020 15:43

Insecure, or guilty conscience ? You decide ....

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 15:47

I don't think Redwood has a conscience; nor is he insecure. So I have to opt for a brazen liar, who finds arithmetic difficult.
