Westministenders: Its the waiting that kills you

Just waiting.

Talks between Frost and Barnier still unresolved issues. There are rumours but 'all without evidence' (the new in phrase on BBC news tonight) that the UK is waivering.

Less that two months to go.

And there is the small matter of what happens in the US than might influence events.

Is Redwood another one challenged by arithmetic? By my reckoning Biden has got 54% of the electoral college. That is greater than the 52% that Leave got.

Clearly he is comparing the popular vote in the US (as it stands) with the referendum vote.

Zixxy · 09/11/2020 16:21

@DGRossetti

I think Biden's Government will be perfectly capable of reading the GFA and subsequent legislation

I'm sure George Mitchell is already on it.

GM is a class act. Was so pivotal in the GFA negotiations. At the time his calm voice was so reassuring.
Tanith · 09/11/2020 16:24

Redwood is challenged full stop. Why anyone ever gives him the time of day, I will never know.

Peregrina · 09/11/2020 16:30

Cleary???

According to the latest figures the total votes counted are 146577986
Of which Biden gained 175553009
and Trump 71024977

This makes Biden's share 52% - rather nicely the same share that the Vote Leave campaign got in the Referendum, which was declared to be overwhelming.

Which confirms that Redwood is arithmetically challenged or that you Clavinova slavishly support the side which went and backed the loser. For that side, Johnson and his Tories, the answers are ' You lost, get over it, what is about democracy that you don't understand, it's the will of the people.'

What were the figures yesterday when he wrote his letter?

Mo Mowlam must have been turning in her grave more than ever recently. Mind you, John Major has also had a few choice words to say about Johnson's cavalier attitude to the GFA. Major's gone quiet recently, I've just realised. Did I miss something happening to him?

An absolutely amazing woman. She genuinely, wanted, and worked for, peace in NI because it was the right thing to do. She was one of a very few Northern Ireland secretaries who didn't look on the role as a booby prize.

No idea what the figures were when Redwood wrote his letter, except that Biden was already ahead in the popular vote. They might have been ahead on Wednesday last, but in which case, he wouldn't be writing to congratulate Biden on his win.

A sore loser.

Zixxy · 09/11/2020 16:47

Agree about Mo Mowlam, I did not mean to exlude her at all. Her personality was wonderful to see in action re GFA. Bless her.

DGRossetti · 09/11/2020 16:49

Because it deserves to be quoted, it will, from wiki

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mo_Mowlam

She "oversaw the negotiations which led to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement."[9] She was successful in helping to restore an IRA ceasefire and including Sinn Féin in multi-party talks about the future of Northern Ireland. In an attempt to persuade the Ulster loyalists to participate in the peace process, she paid an unprecedented and potentially dangerous visit to loyalist prisoners in the Maze prison, meeting convicted murderers face-to-face and unaccompanied.

(contd)

Sometimes it is cometh the hour, cometh the person. But that's the standard to which I hold politicians. So when I'm less than complimetary about our current crop, you can see why.

Zixxy · 09/11/2020 16:54

The serendipity of a Labour Government in UK, Bertie Ahern ROI (who attended the talks on the day his mother died), and the Clinton Administration led to peace in the North. A truly wonderful achievement by all concerned.

There is nothing like that in politics these days sadly.

Peregrina

We have both forgotten the other parties standing for election.

Associated Press:

Biden 50.7%
Trump 47.6%
Libertarian Party 1.2%
Green Party 0.2%
Others 0.3%

You may have forgetten the other people standing, Clavinova- I hadn't, it's just that the major news sites are not reporting who the others are.

Even taking your conservative figure of 51.49%, the Electoral Commission reported that the Referendum result was 51.9% for Leave and 48.1% for Remain. From this 0.41% Redwood crows about a larger percentage mandate. Well, yes, 0.01% would have been a larger percentage mandate, but he appears to be trying to imply that the Leave mandate was much bigger. Either way, he is still a sore loser, and it still gives me delight to see the nasty piece of work wriggling on a hook.

ListeningQuietly · 09/11/2020 17:12
