I think that there may be a run on tinned tomatoes and pasta coming. Pizza will no longer have mozzarella in 2021.

On the plus side turnips are in season.

Ease of filling out American tax forms completely depends on what IRS form(s) you have to use.

TheABC · 25/10/2020 08:25

So...this morning, we have senior Tory calling for Dido's head whilst 200 paediatricians have signed an open letter supporting free school meals in the holidays.

Neither issue will go away.

TheABC · 25/10/2020 08:28

Interesting op piece from the Guardian. It's biased, of course, but does a good job of summing up the Government's negotiating strategy.

Peregrina · 25/10/2020 08:35

I heard that Johnson was waiting for the results of the American election to see whether to go for No Deal or a Poor Deal. Poor Deal = Great Oven Ready Deal.

KonTikki · 25/10/2020 08:58

Surely, surely even the present incumbents of the Government could foresee how appalling the refusal to grant free school meals for the less well off families over holiday periods will look ?
Or are they really so out of touch ....
Or do they genuinely not care how it comes across ?

Stand by for yet another full 180 degree turn by the Ship of State with its incompetent ameuritish crew !

Peregrina · 25/10/2020 09:18

It's when it's juxtaposed with the money they have spent on their friends - the failed track and trace, the MPs payrise. This may not be something they voted for themselves, but I haven't seen any of them rushing to post on social media to say that this rise is inappropriate at this time and they would have been willing to take a £3000 cut until the pandemic is over.

(We need a Clavinova cut 'n' paste to tell us that someone has.)

Clavinova · 25/10/2020 09:22

This sounds a little familiar;

"Phil Hogan has reason to be aggrieved over von der Leyen’s Covid quarantine trip."

"Big Phil has good reason to feel aggrieved at having to resign from his trade commissioner job over his attendance at [a] golf dinner. Accepting his resignation, the EC president said she expected members of the commission “to be particularly vigilant about compliance with applicable national or regional rules or recommendations”.

"Last week, von der Leyen abruptly abandoned Thursday’s European Council meeting to go into self-isolation because a member of her staff had tested positive for Covid. But while in quarantine, she dropped completely from the radar. No news as to her whereabouts."

"This week, journalists in Brussels finally managed to solve the mystery of the missing Ursula, prising the information from a vague-sounding spokesperson. The commission president lives in the Berlaymont Building in Brussels, but fled to her hometown of Hanover, a five-hour drive from Belgium, nipping through the Netherlands and on into Germany. This was not disclosed to the media."

"Her spokesperson insisted von der Leyen followed all the rules and went into “preventative self-isolation” with is not the same as quarantine."

Clavinova · 25/10/2020 09:23

"which" [sic]

Peregrina · 25/10/2020 09:36

So Ursula von der Leyen does a Cummings? Surely testing her eyesight must be acceptable?

Clavinova · 25/10/2020 10:06

^So Ursula von der Leyen does a Cummings?*

Not forgetting of course that she had to self-isolate earlier in the month after her "essential" trip to Lisbon;

The problem is plenty of people have bought into the benefit scrounger narrative and would have supported the gov line on FSM's. There had already been 5 years of austerity and rising use of foodbanks and people continued to vote Tory. Even with the threat of a hard right government last December so called moderates and liberals could not bring themselves to vote for the party strong on tackling social inequalities because they had an axe to grind with Corbyn or had disappeared down the remain rabbit hole.

The iniative spearheaded by Marcus Rashford is in part popular because of a much liked footballer/public figure. Without him it would have got very little traction imo.

Tanith · 25/10/2020 11:11

"Tobias ellwood is just another self serving tory."

No, he isn't:

www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/sep/17/westminster-attack-mp-tobias-ellwood-was-told-to-stop-giving-cpr-to-police-officer

ListeningQuietly · 25/10/2020 12:02

The FSM debacle may well be a serious one.
Parents cannot work because of Lockdown measures.
Kids cannot go round to friends and childminders and grandparents because of lockdown measures.
But the Tories classified their own bars as "workplace canteens"
Out of touch is an understatement

Shrillharridan · 25/10/2020 12:45

Having had to perform cpr myself I would suggest it does not inherently make you decent human being.

I stand by my comment.

He is backsliding because he has an eye on the top job, not because he genuinely thinks it was the wrong decision.

GrishainDisguise · 25/10/2020 12:55

I am actually surprised by Marcus Rashford's success. The venom he had to suffer from the tabloids and so-called England fans over the years is off the scale.

Tanith · 25/10/2020 13:01

You said he was just another self-serving Tory. You now attribute his second thoughts on a desire to become Prime Minister, with no evidence whatsoever that he even wants the job.

Some of us have a lot of time for him, precisely because of the way he behaved in trying to save PC Keith Palmer. It was the act of a decent human being, not of a self-serving one.

Shrillharridan · 25/10/2020 13:06

Then we shall have to agree to disagree shan't we?

Shrillharridan · 25/10/2020 13:07

Tories gonna tory

Shrillharridan · 25/10/2020 13:09

I know nothing about Marcus rashfords football career but I'm not surprised he has been subject to racist abuse sadly.

Shrillharridan · 25/10/2020 13:15

Mr Ellwood:
In 2015, he backed the move by IPSA to increase salaries for politicians by 10% when the rest of the public sector were on a freeze of 1%. He apologised for any offence caused by the comment that without the proposed raise to his £90,000 salary he would be "watching the pennies"...

The game of Brexit chicken goes on
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-54681400
is the UK starting to blink?

Shrillharridan · 25/10/2020 13:19

Oh..
I missed this at the time...
In November 2018,George Papadopoulosaccused Ellwood of being a British source that was allegedly spying onDonald Trumpand others, a claim which he publicly denied

Shrillharridan · 25/10/2020 13:21

Ellwood was also threatened with arrest in 2010 outside the HofC for confronting an anti war protester.
Hes a Lt. Col now, I understand.

DGRossetti · 25/10/2020 13:22

UK source for Brexit news ? Hardly worth the electrons.

I'll believe it when it's written in French, Italian or German.

Shrillharridan · 25/10/2020 13:22

Right!
I'm off to watch some badly dubbed german roman history thing on Netflix 😁
