I think that there may be a run on tinned tomatoes and pasta coming. Pizza will no longer have mozzarella in 2021.

On the plus side turnips are in season.

Extraordinary given the US polling but Ladbrokes report that 75% OF ALL BETS PLACED on the US Election in the UK favour Donald Trump.

@SabrinaThwaite

I’m pretty sure the EU were proposing a Canada or South Korea style FTA years ago?
Brexiteer 101 was to ignore anything the EU said - after all what do they know ?

And even then a Canada deal would not have covered financial services. Possibly because (and this may still be a shock to some) the UK isn't Canada.

If the US election were a sports fixture (appropriate word, really) that would probably trigger a cancellation.

I can guarantee here and now that the laws surrounding the operation of the Kent lorry park are going to require that drivers remain with their vehicles at all times .

Is this to prevent British citizens stowing away on lorries to seek a better life in the EU? Economic migrants as the Tories have it.

The80sweregreat · 16/10/2020 14:18

The oven ready deal has just given Boris Johnson food poisoning. It was always undercooked from the start.

RedToothBrush · 16/10/2020 14:19

Sam Coates Sky @SamCoatesSky
Boris Johnson's spokesman: "First thing to say is that the trade talks are over. EU have effectively ended them by saying they do not want to change their negotiating positions. No point in trade talks if EU doesn’t change its position."

BJ spox: "There is only a point in Michel Barnier coming to London next week if he is prepared to discuss all the issues on the basis of legal texts in an accelerated way if without the UK being required to make all the moves....

.... , or willing to discuss practicalities of areas, such as travel and haulage. If not, there is no point in coming."

LeClerc asked that I posted this sooner or later the lazy sod will sort his own account out again Wink

With this suggestion about an 'Australian' deal. the main thing to observe is that ANY deal and even NO deal still requires the UK to sit down and discuss and define what ANYTHING means and who the adjudicators will be.
If BoJo and Frost simply pack their bags and go/stay at home the UK will automatically get whatever the EU can be bothered to let them have.
Starting with the 12 point plan that the EU posted last year.
I feel a wry sketch coming on:
A French person at Calais, looking out to sea with the comment 'I'm sure there used to be some land and white cliffs over there

I don't think many people can grasp what 7,000 lorries looks like. It only takes one driver to go missing to cause gridlock. Unless the Kent Lorry Park operators are going to retain HGV drivers plus break-in crews to cope with missing drivers.

That's before you consider the notion of driving a lorryload of ANFO into the park and fucking off before it blows. Only needs to happen once.

No. Once you've passed the border, you won't be allowed to go more than 10m from your cab at any time.

Tony Connelly @tconnellyRTE
Quick take from Brussels on @BorisJohnson’s No Deal threat:

Officials are relatively relaxed. Note @vonderleyen tweet saying that negotiations will resume on Monday, ie business as usual...

Ongoing bemusement over the line that the EU has refused to grant the UK a “Canada-style FTA”. Canada was never the model, say officials, as that would have meant a line by line negotiation on tariffs

That in turn would have required an extension to the transition, which Johnson refused

Also, officials point out that what the UK has sought goes beyond the Canada deal (professional qualifications, Mode 4 free movement for work reasons, procurement opportunities)

Finally, officials note that Johnson did not zero in on (or attack) the EU’s position on fisheries, level playing field and governance

And a follow up take from a UK source:

Source says the trade talks were effectively ended by the EU yesterday when they said they did not want to change their negotiating position.

Source says the EU can either fundamentally change its position, or UK leaves on Australian terms.

^Source adds that EU officials shd only come to London if they are prepared to discuss all issues, on the basis of legal texts, in an accelerated way, without the UK being required to make all the moves.
Or we can talk about flights, lorries etc^
If not there is no point coming.

Henry Tanguy @HenryTanguy
Your UK source, whoever it is, either is somewhat removed from the actual state of negotiations, as to which it is premature to discuss legal texts when key issues remain unresolved, or if not so removed, doesn't understand how to negotiate.

I think we can take from this that there will be talks on monday and someone is posturing to the media as Johnson said that no talks would happen after his deadline, except they are planned to.

OP posts:
DGRossetti · 16/10/2020 14:28

As Grant Shapps let slip recently, the UK also needs the EU to be nice to let flights continue.

DGRossetti · 16/10/2020 14:32

Boris Johnson is a liar, so we can safely discount anything he says.

It's interesting that 30 years ago, the idea of Twitter and Facebook would have been seen as a "democratisation" of knowledge and an egalitarian platform for change.

In reality they have just provided criminal politicians with an end-run around the restrictions they faced when news was more or less news.

FatCatThinCat · 16/10/2020 15:03

Oops, posted on the old thread.

It really fucking pisses me off that leavers are now making out like they just wanted a Canada deal like EU initially offered. The Canada deal has a dispute resolution system that involves EU judges. No fucking way did they want that. Like always they wanted to benefits of the Canada deal with none of the responsibilities of it. Cakeism.

DGRossetti · 16/10/2020 15:13

For a majority, Leavers are very shy.

bellinisurge · 16/10/2020 15:34

Haven't seen a single Leaver on any of these threads recently.

DGRossetti · 16/10/2020 15:39

@bellinisurge

Haven't seen a single Leaver on any of these threads recently.
As things were starting to go obviously pear shaped, they started a narrative of how nasty remainers were bullying them (because they were in the majority weren't they ? So even their excuses were a bit low quality ...)
QuentinWinters · 16/10/2020 15:50

Yes, where is the brexit Arms?

Songsofexperience · 16/10/2020 15:55

They decided it wasn't cosy enough on MN and shut it down.

DGRossetti · 16/10/2020 15:57

Well, the last thread with "Brexit Arms" in the title was here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eu_referendum_2016_/3810863-the-brexit-arms-farewell-party

with a last post:

Tempting as it may be to poke the hornets nest with a sharp stick (if you think Brexiteers actually know what sharp sticks look like) I'm guessing it will be a tumbleweed exercise.

Just as an side, linguistically, if not logically, is it possible for a minority to bully a majority ? I'm guessing not, but happy to chew the fat over the matter.

Peregrina · 16/10/2020 16:00

So Oven Ready Deal - No Deal.
The Leavers/Tory voters should be asking for their money back.
