I think that there may be a run on tinned tomatoes and pasta coming. Pizza will no longer have mozzarella in 2021.

On the plus side turnips are in season.

Patrick Maguire @patrickkmaguire
Boris Johnson should consider disestablishing the Church of England if controversy over its senior clergy's political interventions continues, Steve Baker tells The Times.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/pm-could-sever-ties-with-interfering-bishops-says-steve-baker-cpxkgbdx7

Maybe he could bring back beheading wives whilst he's at it too. What do you think?

Why stick at going back to the Victoria era for justice and morality? Why stick at the civil war period for national division? Why not do the whole British history lesson and include wife beheading with the Henry VIII powers?

Second thoughts is there a frenchman, dutchman, german or scandinavian available who could just take over please?

I noticed their Lordships (well those that are Lords) getting shirty and point out that they damn well do understand what they are talking about ..

www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-politics-54600722

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has denied religious leaders are "misinformed" after they criticised negotiations for a post-Brexit trade deal.

(contd)

for whatever reason - child poverty, rising homelessness and growing inequality clearly weren't enough - but this bill seems to have got the CofE in a right royal tizz.

Peregrina · 20/10/2020 10:45

AFAIK The Church of England is only established in England - Definitely not Wales since 1920, and not Scotland or N Ireland.

DGRossetti · 20/10/2020 10:52

@Peregrina

AFAIK The Church of England is only established in England - Definitely not Wales since 1920, and not Scotland or N Ireland.
I wonder what the head of the CofE thinks ? Not just of this, but that they seem to have been destined to end their reign in absolute turbulence. Don't forget Barbados and Jamaica are waving goodbye to Liz as well as this shit show and the strain on the Union.
Peregrina · 20/10/2020 10:56

Waving goodbye to Liz is not the same as whether the Church is established in England or not.

ListeningQuietly · 20/10/2020 11:02

The bishops in the HoL have always been an anomaly
the Sentanu debacle has fired them up
and the fact that many churches run food banks
so know that they will be seeing the huddled masses after a fuck up hard Brexit

If the UK / France border closes at the end of the year
no COVID lockdown of any kind will be relevant

as there will be no food in the supermarkets or the delivery vans dropping off ready meals to those with the money and space to stay at home.

A competent Government would be putting all of its energies into building resilience into the system
not destroying it Angry

DGRossetti · 20/10/2020 11:07

@Peregrina

Waving goodbye to Liz is not the same as whether the Church is established in England or not.
It is when you draw in on a graph of a decline of the Monarch under the Windsors. Which arguably began with the abdication.

The shrinking Commonwealth, the fast dissolving Union, the revelations of the limits of power and now a non trivial suggestion of disestablishment ? Makes annus horribilis look like a lottery win.

I don't think we've been closer to a Republic since Prinnys days. "Poor" old Liz is painted into a corner of studied compliance. The slightest hint of dissent and it will be time for the UK to have our own president Johnson.

borntobequiet · 20/10/2020 11:08

Didn't Steve Baker say something sensible the other day? Good to see he's back on form.

Peregrina · 20/10/2020 11:18

I don't think the Commonwealth is shrinking - I believe it's actually taken in countries which were never part of the British Empire. What it is though, and what it does, is a good question.

RedToothBrush · 20/10/2020 12:39

The oven ready deal was thwarted by a sentient oven according to an MP.

I think this possibly is the best excuse I've seen yet.

The excuses and spin emanating from the Government are really cheering me up. Especially the sentient oven!

I take my silver linings where I find them.

prettybird · 20/10/2020 12:53

That response deserves a 😂! Wink

Peregrina · 20/10/2020 13:01

To my mind that read as though they never had a deal. To compare with an oven ready deal - it's not much good to you sitting on the supermarket shelf - it's only oven ready for you when you buy it and take it home to cook.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 20/10/2020 13:16

Oh, so they had an "oven ready proposal "

HoneysuckIejasmine · 20/10/2020 13:17

Also that MP is incredibly rude.

Mistigri · 20/10/2020 14:04

What a plonker.

In a tight race for the stupidest Tory MP we have a new front runner.

Mistigri · 20/10/2020 14:08

Oh and his Wikipedia page is comedy gold.

The good people of Ashfield must be proud of themselves. They elected this idiot first as a Labour councillor then (after his defection to the Tories) as an MP!!

Mistigri · 20/10/2020 14:10

And I don't feel sorry for the electors of Ashfield in the slightest. It's not like they got saddled with a posh Tory picked by central office. This idiot is home grown and they've been electing him in various capacities for years!

HesterThrale · 20/10/2020 14:32

The same Lee Anderson who faked this encounter while campaigning last year? The quality of Tory candidates these days...

Talking of smears and fakes, Scotland had better brace for this new onslaught ...

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2020 14:52

I wonder if some Tory MPs generally think that signing a business deal, e.g. to lease a car, is only valid if the other side then give you a lot of concessions previously requested and refused

Tier 3 talks with Greater Manchester end 'without an agreement'

What a plonker.

In a tight race for the stupidest Tory MP we have a new front runner.

He’s the plonker that got caught out by a journalist canvassing his mate and getting him to pretend that he didn’t know him.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/10/2020 15:23

If Tier 3 is imposed on Greater Manchester, local Tory MPs and councillors should be very worried

The voters are likely to blame the govt for any and all economic fallout, both private & business

Police must be worried about how to enforce this against the wishes of local leaders - they may not attempt it ?
