The government is telling pharmacists and drug manufactures to stockpile drugs ahead of the end of transition on 31st December.

In the middle of a pandemic.

What could go wrong?

If you're prepping for no-deal Brexit, make sure you pay just as much attention to non-food items as you do to food items. We get A LOT of OTC drugs from Europe.

yoikes · 15/08/2020 16:00

Yep.
Restock your 1st aid kit too

prettybird · 15/08/2020 16:07

Just as well neither dh or I are suicidal as I've been buying paracetamol and ibuprofen most weeks at Lidl and now have a whole pile of packets Shock

I'll need to stock up on Ibuprofen gel for dh too (he's needing a hip replacement but hasn't even seen the Orthopod yet to get onto the list but has had his MRI, seen the physio, who let him take a picture of the result to show to my dad who is a retired radiologist Sad)

HoneysuckIejasmine · 15/08/2020 16:22

Yes, I grab a pack or two of medicines every time I do a shop. The order I've got coming on weds is almost entirely jarred and tinned food. I get fresh stuff from farm shop now, we've sorted milk and egg deliveries, the kids have clothes in next few sizes.

As I said to DH "I know we have a lot in already but I don't trust this government enough to not get more whilst we can". Sad

ListeningQuietly · 15/08/2020 16:32

Yup, I'm gradually building my stockpile back up

still debating buying an extra small freezer - not sure where I'd put it though

DGRossetti · 15/08/2020 16:49

@Peregrina

Certainly when recruiting I've made a point of ignoring qualifications. I don't really care what you did. I care what you can do. And exams are fairly useless for that.

Up to a point - I wouldn't want to be treated by a doctor who hadn't been to medical school but had just got stuck in and learnt on the job by trial and error.

Well the trained doctors that missed a friend of DWs ectopic pregnancy over 3 separate visits to A&E a few years ago before she died in agony were all qualified, so I stand by my point.

Especially when even I - someone who didn't get as far as O level biology - would make my first question to a woman of childbearing age complaining of abdominal pain "could you be pregnant ?"

That's not to say there isn't a place for a systematic and cogent knowledge of a subject. But (as with everything in the universe) it's a question of balance. There's a time and a place for exams. There's a time and a place for demonstrating practical skills. And they aren't exclusive but complementary.

I feel almost sorry for Me Williamson.
An epic shitstorm is about to commence on his watch and he can't do anything about it without Johnson's say-so. Compare and contrast with Scotland...

Almost sorry. If you sacrifice your spine for a cushy job, don't be surprised when the boss treats you as a cushion.

quiteathome · 15/08/2020 17:11

No sympathy for Williamson. I thought he was married to a teacher, although that is probably not true. He should have a bit of a clue surely?

I will add paracetamol and antihistamine and first aid kit supplies and toothpaste to the list.
I can't believe I am still thinking about stockpiling.

quiteathome · 15/08/2020 17:12

Or I suppose I should call it prepping. It is not like I am buying it all in one go.

I have no sympathy for Williamson it's his choice go literally hang out with the wrong crowd.... plus this is the guy who leaked state secrets.

I also just want to correct " he can't do anything without Boris's say so..... he can't do anything without Dominic's say so - is I think closer to the truth.

He also supported probably the UK's most incompetent and lazy PM's into power - so I hope he burns in hell.

Actually think I may be quite angry too....

Might explain the frenzy of re-Organization if my Box room (I think that's the right description) to fit more shelving in, for a tidier and bigger stockpile

mrslaughan · 15/08/2020 17:23

Btw - I saw mention that this is Boris's 3rd holiday this year...... how many of us have managed 3 holidays? It's not like he's got anything urgent to deal with.....
I hope he is driven out of Scotland

Well now he's "had" Covid, it would be churlish to deny him the chance to rest ... as we are learning it can be quite a debilitating experience that is lingering for many.

Much like a Tory government, when you think about it.

Peregrina · 15/08/2020 17:34

I don't feel the slightest bit sorry for Williamson. He can do the honourable thing and resign.

Andante57 · 15/08/2020 17:40

And on the QT most of the upper classes were quite happy with this, because they still believed in Nazi ideology, but it was no longer possible to admit to it.

Peregrina - Do you have any evidence that ‘most’ of the upper classes believed in Nazi ideology?

DGRossetti · 15/08/2020 17:41

Meanwhile it seems that being desperate and cramming into a boat to cross the channel is OK if you're just returning home before the Prosecco gets too warm ...

I realise many of you won't be able to appreciate this until you get your irony meter fixed after the Williamson statement about ability, so here's a quote:

BOAT PEOPLE: The sheer fucking irony of the Daily Mail sympathetically reporting on people desperately trying to get to Britain from France using any means necessary.

I'm vaguely tempted to post a rabble rousingly titled post in AIBU about "To think something needs to be done about these boat people" ...

Westministenders: Don't forget to stockpile. Again.
DGRossetti · 15/08/2020 17:45

Peregrina - Do you have any evidence that ‘most’ of the upper classes believed in Nazi ideology?

It's less important whether they did or not than the fact that a lot of Nazi High Command believed it to be true. Certainly Ribbentrop did as ambassador to the Court of St. James. A story I hope one day gets made into the comedy it deserves to.

One: Edward Windsor definitely had Nazi sympathies. As the UK security services noted with concern early on.

This just appeared on my FB feed

‘Ah Gavin, please sit down. I’m going to begin your appraisal by looking back over the last few years.’
‘Few years? I’ve only been doing the job for a year.’
‘Yes, but we need to look at your predecessors.’
‘Why? That doesn’t affect how I do my job.’
‘I’m afraid it does. Let’s start with Damian. He didn’t do much to be honest. Basically kept the seat warm for you. Now Justine. We had very high hopes for her. Lots of enthusiasm but she was too friendly with the teachers. Sadly, she had to go. What to say about Nicky? Made the mistake of thinking she could do the job in the same way as the previous minister. No originality. Something you can’t accuse Michael of. Totally overhauled the system. Of course, it did annoy quite a few people - teachers, unions, parents and pupils. Quite a lot to live up to there, eh Gavin?’
‘Yes but I think I’ve managed the last one.’
‘Annoy teachers, unions, parents and pupils? Yes, I think you’ve managed that. But overall, based on all your predecessors, I’m going to have to mark you down.’
‘But that’s not fair? What about the work I’ve done this year?’
‘Doesn’t count for much. You see we have to base your appraisal on how others have done the job.’
‘That makes no sense whatsoever.’
‘No, it doesn’t. Now you know how the year 13 students feel.’

BigChocFrenzy · 15/08/2020 18:50

We could use a "Grayling" as the unit of incompetence.

I'd say Williamson has achieved a full 1.0 of a Grayling with this exam disaster
