Today is the last scheduled day for talks with the EU.

We have til 30th June to ask for a transition extension. We won't.

That leaves us starring down the barrel of a no deal exit, when we still could be in a covid-19 crisis and the US may be in turmoil given recent events and the coming election...

It's not a pretty picture.

BJ on Daily Briefing Duty this afternoon.

Looks like Wednesday is his one-day working week.

From memory trader joes was quite good - it was just tricky to manage with a toddler , and getting it home on subway or in a taxi...

midwestsummer · 10/06/2020 16:10

Something else I'm not really sure about is the belief that food will get cheaper.
Food in the USA is a lot more expensive than the UK.
Multi nationals already trade in both the USA and the UK. The ones I have personal knowledge of are planning on price rises, or are already putting them through, not price reductions.
Margins in supermarket in the UK are already very low. Indeed food prices overall are.

mrslaughan · 10/06/2020 16:11

Union square food market is fab.
Issue in NYC is so many people eat out all the time ..... but I think that's not necessarily just an NYC thing.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jun/10/brexit-eu-may-veto-uk-trade-deal-lacking-safeguards-leaked-report-reveals

The European parliament could veto any trade deal between the UK and the European Union that lacks “robust” safeguards to ensure fair competition and strong standards on the environment and workers’ rights, according to a leaked document.

and (double bill post..)

www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/jun/10/uks-top-prosecutor-threatened-with-legal-action-if-dominic-cummings-not-investigated

The director of public prosecutions, Max Hill, is being threatened with legal action if he fails to investigate Dominic Cummings for alleged breaches of the lockdown rules.

A legal team, headed by the barrister Michael Mansfield, has twice written to Hill, expressing concern that no action has yet been taken against Cummings after a Guardian and Daily Mirror investigation revealed the prime minister’s chief adviser travelled with his family to Durham and Barnard Castle during the lockdown.

The petition seeking Parliament to debate an extension the UK-EU transition is finally gathering a momentum. It needs less than 5k signatures to reach the 100k which requires the petition to be 'considered' for a debate. Please do consider checking that you have signed it and share with others - given that our laws only allow for an extension to be put in place by July 1st time is really running out petition.parliament.uk/petitions/300412

midwestsummer · 10/06/2020 16:41

The oven thing is true, we are living in our landlords exhouse. The oven broke and he asked how often we were using it, I said most days and he said he had only used it about six times!
It is a massive, expensive range thing.

Long way to go to reach 6,000,000+ which is the current "where did we put it threshold".

If you want anyone to take notice, you might have better luck with a rope and a harbour.

mrslaughan · 10/06/2020 17:11

Boris doing a full days work today - well I suppose making a full day of his one day makes sense

mrslaughan · 10/06/2020 17:13

I am surprised Boris has any idea about what an exclusive relationship is

LouiseCollins28 · 10/06/2020 17:33

On “Social Bubbles” Govt changes to the lockdown are starting to remind me of this mobile insurance ad! Surely time for Rhod Gilbert to appear in a govt ad?....

LouiseCollins28 · 10/06/2020 17:34

Oh this is an unwitting PMK from me as well, using the video I just posted, didn’t think of that before 😂

Oh he brought some scientists today...

dontcallmelen · 10/06/2020 19:12

yoikes that is one fine looking cake.

yoikes · 10/06/2020 19:37

Shall I pop some in a jiffy bag for you len? :)

I had a long awaited follow up appt at hospital yesterday. I've been waiting since Feb and tests I had done as an emergency.

The dr could not have been more dismissive. He actually shrugged and sighed at one point when ai asked about the other lesion that had been found.

So. Whilst I'm very sure the NHS is doing it's best I'm getting a 2nd opinion.

It's clear that the wait lists will be horrific come Sept/October.

I think it's really scary actually. So many potentially life saving missed diagnoses, people getting steadily worse with no input, people dying without decent palliative care...so awful.

And that's before we even get to social care...it's going to collapse.

Sorry. Not a happy post but it's how I'm feeling.

Love to all x

dontcallmelen · 10/06/2020 19:56

yoikes oh yes please, I shall camp out under the letterbox waiting for it, yy I agree with pp it’s just another disaster waiting to happen along with all the other horrors that await us, I hope you get a second opinion quickly💐 I’m also feeling the same I’m filled with such loathing for this government I can’t articulate how much they sicken me more & more as each day passes.

yoikes · 10/06/2020 21:20

Might be a bit squishy....:)

I'm just....tired. Bone tired. I'm nearly 50 and still fighting these motherfuckers.

Talking to ds1 (16) today and I'm trying so hard to be positive for him but....

I've actually clutched at the straw today of the Atlee Govt after WW2. It scares me that this country will need to experience such a level of suffering in the hope of a decent, far thinking Govt for the people.

Sigh.

AuldAlliance · 10/06/2020 21:58

Lockdown is well and truly over here in France.
Gaggles of yelling teenagers on our square, sitting on top of each other on the benches and playfighting.
Neighbours telling me it was all a load of rubbish and no one needs to be wearing a face mask.
Everyone planning holidays in rental houses, gîtes, etc.
University has shifted from saying we have to plan for blended on-campus and distance teaching to saying there are 3 possible scenarios, the first of which is that we just go back to teaching normally in Sept, but disinfect rooms in between classes and try to limit students moving classrooms, with teachers doing so instead, and have smaller groups (impossible in my faculty).

Hard to believe we were in strict lockdown a month ago...and that in Scotland my mum is struggling to recover from her hip fracture because no physios will do home visits.

yoikes · 10/06/2020 22:04

Sorry to hear that auld

Our most vulnerable citizens are being abandoned :(

ListeningQuietly · 10/06/2020 22:08

In happier news,
my friend who had been without a hip joint since last summer
was called it short notice, operated on and kicked back out of hospital PDQ
and is looking fab.

SOME bits of the NHS are working.

If we could just get rid of the emperors new clothes 2m rule
then health and education and society could start to recover

prettybird · 10/06/2020 22:13

Dh unexpectedly got a phone call today from his physio (he saw her for the first time 2 days before lockdown), checking that he was doing his exercises (he admitted that he hadn't been as diligent as he should have been Hmm) and reminding him how important they were as his muscles have wasted so he needs to build them up for when ever Winkhe gets his hip replacement. She's going to send him some more exercises and he's promised to do them diligently. Grin

Good news was that she'd checked and his GP had already put him onto the list to see the Orthopaedic Consultant back in January, so even though it's been stalled, at least he's on it. Smile

She said that they've been working throughout seeing emergency patients (like hip fractures). This is Glasgow though - maybe your mum needs to push harder over in Edinburgh, Auld .

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/06/2020 22:19

It's all bollocky crap isn't it. I've been waiting for a surgical appointment for several months. In daily pain. It got cancelled in April, I have no idea when and if I should chase it as I'm not urgent.

And I'm sure the government is trolling us with ever more complex stupid rules.

AuldAlliance · 10/06/2020 22:20

Thanks for that, prettybird and yoikes. Some glimmers of light there.
I'll call her tomorrow and suggest she could maybe insist a bit more.
Originally, they wanted her to self-administer daily anti-clotting injections, but she said she didn't feel she could, so at least a district nurse is seeing her regularly for those.
But the lack of physio is worrying - she is struggling to find the right balance between overdoing it and not moving around enough and seems to be in a lot of pain still.

BigChocFrenzy · 10/06/2020 22:26

yoikes, kitten, Auldsenior 💐
I so hope you get proper treatment soon
Poor old NHS doesn't have the resources to catch up on a backlog as quickly as it should
