“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

Not George Orwell but often attributed to him. But a powerful statement with resonance nonetheless

"Celtic fringe" = that's what we called my cousin after a VERY bad haircut Grin

yoikes · 30/05/2020 18:26

I'm off to eat a piece of cake as big as my head.

Laters.

QuestionMarkNow · 30/05/2020 18:41

@Pepperwort, that's a really good article

Copperas · 30/05/2020 18:59

The British Army was full of Irishmen - big area of recruitment in the 18th and 19th centuries

DGRossetti · 30/05/2020 19:03

The Irish are not and have never been British. In 1801 the Act of Union created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

I'm on the naughty step for an hour. But pleased to have had it pointed out to me.

Now there's an abject lesson in arrogance. I was on the verge of googling to make sure I was right, but then assumed I was. Whether that's male, half-English, or age driven I can't say.

Obviously any chance I had of passing myself of as Boris - or indeed any senior Tory has been well and truly busted.

AuldAlliance · 30/05/2020 19:06

Lots of Scots and Irish worked in colonial administrations overseas. There were few job opportunities at home, and they were often considered tough and well able to withstand difficult climates and conditions.

DGRossetti · 30/05/2020 19:07

Meanwhile, half a globe away, Trump appears to be hailing General McArthur as an example of a great American Hmm

RedToothBrush · 30/05/2020 19:37

I've said for the last three years that Trump would be quite happy to start a civil war. I stand by saying that.

He is doing poorly in the polls, the coronavirus crisis is not going well, the economy isn;t doing so great.

He needs a distraction and to fuel racial unrest for his election campaign.

I fear that things in the US are going to get a lot worse before they get better.

@HoneysuckIejasmine

Fucks sake, going to have to emigrate at this rate. Thank you Brexiteer FIL for being born in NI

How’s an Irish FIL going to help? You’re not entitled to an Irish passport as a spouse unless you relocate to Ireland and apply for citizenship.

SabrinaThwaite · 30/05/2020 20:10

[Other than your spouse being entitled to an Irish passport for you to go down the spouse route]

RTB
What Trump forgets is that his gun nut fans are more likely to shoot their own family members than anybody else.

Tanith · 30/05/2020 21:19

"So how is social distancing going this weekend?"

Not very well...

pmk

LouiseCollins28 · 30/05/2020 21:32

The beach near Durdle Door has reportedly been rammed today as well 😔 Morons! Angry

yoikes · 30/05/2020 21:32

I was out earlier running errands.
SO many people out!!
Really worrying.

yoikes · 30/05/2020 21:33

(Collecting medicine and food shopping)

I saw multiple inter generational family groups....

ListeningQuietly · 30/05/2020 21:36

On the other hand
outdoors in the sunshine getting exercise
and
having been out and about right through lockdown .... most people will be doing the covid waltz
The telephoto lens pictures used by the newspapers will not show it
but most people are staying safe distances apart

LouiseCollins28 · 30/05/2020 21:36

Wasn’t noticeably busier here but I’m in a city not a beauty spot and I only went out on a 30 min walk at abt 4pm

ListeningQuietly · 30/05/2020 21:39

I have to admit though that being on the flight path into the hospital
over ten helicopters came in today
four or five is normal for a weekend

LouiseCollins28 · 30/05/2020 21:43

First thought is that govt have released some restrictions a bit too early. We’ll know in a week or two.

ListeningQuietly · 30/05/2020 21:52

Ah my bad - those Durdle Door ones were three of the ones we saw DS notes the codes so only two above normal

Genuinely - people are being careful DESPITE Dom

BigChocFrenzy · 30/05/2020 21:58

We relaxed restrictions 4 weeks ago and people are still social distancing, talking to each other at a good 2-3 m distance

it just seems habit now for most people
Exception being some teens / young adults, but they are at almost no risk

There was a quite well-distanced party by the Rhine
it was good to see youngsters singing and dancing again in the sun
I heard "Ode to Joy" followed by loud cheers Smile

QueenOfThorns · 30/05/2020 21:58

Not much social distancing at all around Durdle Door, before or after the incident, looking at the pictures here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-52864454
