Coronavirus poses a particularly Irish shaped question. How the UK responds to Irish plans for ending lockdown and whether Arlene continues to back an all Ireland plan will be fascinating to watch and see justified regardless of which way we go.

The UK for all its new found independence is looking very closely to the success / failure of EU strategies before making our own plan public. Mainly because we've yet to write one.

Johnson hasn't led much. He's delegated. Yet he gets all the praise for doing the sum total of fuck all and never being the bad guy. There always another fall guy to blame.

Economically we are stuffed and promises of a very quick bounce back don't look likely based on public confidence and willingness to return to places like pubs restaurants and shops.

Our ability to adapt to new conditions at short notice has been tested and businesses can not afford to do this again soon.

This is the background to which we go into talks. Both sides need an extension to serve their best interests. Johnson is determined to cut our nose of to spite our face for the sake of his legacy and to keep those paying the back handers and dodging tax happy.

New Brexitannian Definition of "Bullying"

Easy - "seek to intimidate"

New Brexitannian Definition of "Intimidate" Grin

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 13:59

you really do have a victim mentality!

Not at all - "seek to intimidate" doesn't mean you have succeeded. Wink

prettybird · 08/05/2020 14:00

I have never got that impression from DGR's posts Confused. Calling the UK Government to account, yes. Pointing out stupidity and incompetence where it occurs, yes.

That is not contempt for the UK Confused. That is contempt for the Government which has been rightly earned Sad

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 14:01

TheElementsOfMedical

Are you Piers Morgan? Grin

DGRossetti · 08/05/2020 14:01

Your posts daily highlight your contempt for the UK and all she stands for.

I wonder what gender the UK is in Russian ? (Goes off to check) ...

www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/1oxqap/genders_of_countries_in_russian_1425x625_oc/

• For the UK, Великобритания (Great Britain, fem.) is the standard. Соединённое королевство (United Kingdom, neut.) is seldom used, and Англия (England, fem.) is inaccurate.

fascinating !

My DF would occasionally slip in speech, and refer to something as "he" or "she" from the Italian gender, rather than "it".

TheElementsOfMedical · 08/05/2020 14:03

Also, to re-rail the thread a little bit from the squirrelly me-rail of the past several posts, one has to be slightly concerned if our Brave Patriotic Doughty Brexitatious Cheerleaders can't even cope with some people not fervently agreeing with them and their spaffy figureheads, by posting information and expressing opinions, on an internet forum. How on earth is Brexitannia going to bestride the globe striking awe into the lesser nations (aka. everybody except maybe the USA)?

mrslaughan · 08/05/2020 14:05

Louise - that's a really interesting point.
Because you tie in that shower if shits who are in power with being very central to what the UK is....I don't. I very rarely cross paths with individuals like that. I am not taking eton/Winchester educated...... I know quite a few of those. I am talking about people who by birth have a huge sense of entitlement because of birth/money etc.....maybe it's because I avoid those types?

Just because I have a great life here, love living here for what it provides me - does not mean I won't criticise politicians for making bad decisions. I have quite an international viewpoint - most of the world cannot believe what the UK is choosing to do to itself......
And let me clarify this by saying - everyone makes bad decisions in life - but it's when you can see that you have fucked up , what do you do?

And as for the Singapore on Thames - how does that work when we are shutting ourselves off from our closest neighbors?

DGRossetti · 08/05/2020 14:07

Wow, this thread has descended into a microcosm of the Brexit campaign ... we've gone from "censorship", through "suppress" and "bully" to "intimidate". It's a word soup.

and I have been accused of having contempt for the UK ! Not any old contempt either. But daily contempt. An accusation that was made as if I have been stealing other peoples contempt rations to boost my own !

squid4 · 08/05/2020 14:07

I have low tolerance for internet when I'm on night shifts admittedly, but where did all the insightful posts and conversations go...

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 14:07

TheElementsOfMedical

I thought I coped very well thank you - not convinced by your strategy.

mrslaughan · 08/05/2020 14:09

Sorry Squid ....
Hope things are ok with you💐
Though there is a fabulous explanation on language and dialects in Asia.....

ListeningQuietly · 08/05/2020 14:09

Despising an incompetent government that looks after the rich and lets the poor die
is NOT the same as insulting the country over which those gits govern.

I can UTTERLY despise Trump and all he stands for
while still loving the USA

TheElementsOfMedical · 08/05/2020 14:10

but where did all the insightful posts and conversations go...

They got me-railed by a squirrel 🐿

ListeningQuietly · 08/05/2020 14:14

PS I found Elements language explanations fascinating as well Grin

TheElementsOfMedical · 08/05/2020 14:15

prettybird · 08/05/2020 14:25

yes the language discussion was a high point! Then it all got annoying

I'm alright thanks, very over PPE, my skin is rubbish and I can feel my attention to PPE detail slipping even though the virus is no less dangerous. I took someone's mask off and leaned close because I couldn't hear them yesterday (from a previous stroke, their speech not very clear) I woulda been too scared to do that a month ago... marathon not a sprint but this is tough.

I have also cut my own fringe with average results...

I know I am not improving the quality of discussion here Grin Sorry.

squid4 · 08/05/2020 14:29

Tulips! Daffodil Flowers Smile

prettybird · 08/05/2020 14:37

More tulips just for Squid4 SmileThanks

Beautiful tulips prettybird very impressive Smile

Peregrina · 08/05/2020 14:59

Clavinova - you weren't actually called stupid -

"you obviously don't know what you are talking about and are just making yourself look stupid."

  • in respect to posts about the Chinese language, which unfortunately subsequent posts rather bore out.

OK so Rosetta stone are also guilty and ought to know better - I objected to their bald statement that Mandarin is the official language of Singapore, giving a false impression, when it turns out it's one of four official languages. This was a fact I didn't know and shows that the situation is much more complex.

AuldAlliance · 08/05/2020 15:03

TheElements
Thank you so much for answering my question about your languages. I am woefully ignorant about non-European linguistic issues.

We've had a long message from DS2's school explaining the rules for the handful who will be returning on the 12th, every other week. V strict. Playground sounds particularly grim and involves each child doing solitary play in his/her own space.

I took a pic of our roses for squid but pointy's garden puts all else to shame.

borntobequiet · 08/05/2020 15:09

I think being bullied by DGR would be a bit like being savaged by a dead sheep, as per the Blessed Margaret. Sorry, DGR

DGRossetti · 08/05/2020 15:10

I think being bullied by DGR would be a bit like being savaged by a dead sheep, as per the Blessed Margaret. Sorry, DGR

It's still show business Grin
