Westminstenders: Following the EU lead

Coronavirus poses a particularly Irish shaped question. How the UK responds to Irish plans for ending lockdown and whether Arlene continues to back an all Ireland plan will be fascinating to watch and see justified regardless of which way we go.

The UK for all its new found independence is looking very closely to the success / failure of EU strategies before making our own plan public. Mainly because we've yet to write one.

Johnson hasn't led much. He's delegated. Yet he gets all the praise for doing the sum total of fuck all and never being the bad guy. There always another fall guy to blame.

Economically we are stuffed and promises of a very quick bounce back don't look likely based on public confidence and willingness to return to places like pubs restaurants and shops.

Our ability to adapt to new conditions at short notice has been tested and businesses can not afford to do this again soon.

This is the background to which we go into talks. Both sides need an extension to serve their best interests. Johnson is determined to cut our nose of to spite our face for the sake of his legacy and to keep those paying the back handers and dodging tax happy.

Similar from Germany

So: as long as other countries have problems, the UK doesn't deserve better.

Is one way to interpret a post like that.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 08/05/2020 12:48

I think Mark Drakeford May have popped Boris to Sunday's announcement. Small measures from Monday in line with Westminster - exercise allowed more than once a day, garden centres that can do 2m distancing can reopen and local authorities being allowed to plan safe reopening of libraries and refuse centres.

DGRossetti
Have you joined the mumsnet censorship committee?

prettybird · 08/05/2020 12:54

Who wants to have a sweepstake about if when in his speech on Sunday, BJ mentions who he thinks he's like Churchill Grin, given that it will be 80 years to the day that Churchill became PM which I'm sure is just a coincidence Wink

Peregrina · 08/05/2020 12:57

I don't think anyone is stopping you posting Clavinova - some may think what you are posting is rubbish, but that ultimately is a matter of opinion.

TheElementsOfMedical · 08/05/2020 12:57

Yup.

It's a squirrel which is racing-to-the-bottom.

Censorship ? How so. Please explain ? I am confused. Not a rare state of affairs admittedly.

It's not censorship to point out certain themes your posts convey, surely ? (I appreciate my dictionary might be a bit last year). and while my style might be taken as somewhat juvenile, I will remind you that in a country where the future PM was filmed locking himself in a fridge to avoid a reporter, it may not be the word "censorship" that needs redefining, but "juvenile". Or, for Boris delectation Juvenal

As a privately run site, MN is entirely free to set and enforce their own policy on postings, posters and content, and I have no input to that, apart from the odd "report" (which I seem to be able to manage silently) for obvious spammers.

Usually it's pinko lefties that are accused of paranoia ....

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 13:14

To repeat the same standard response to someone's post smacks of censorship.

Usually it's pinko lefties that are accused of paranoia ...

Yesterday I was called 'stupid', a 'bot', 'the far right', a 'climate change denier' and a 'virus denier' - today I've got 'paranoia'. Grin Grin

TheElementsOfMedical · 08/05/2020 13:20

Look, another squirrel 🐿

Look Look See Brave Doughty Brexiter Bullied By Remoaners Who Are Doing New Special Brexitannian Definition Of Censorship.

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 13:22

You mean he ignored a juvenile stunt by Piers Morgan the day before a general election and went on to win an 80 seat majority - sounds like good strategy to me.

mrslaughan · 08/05/2020 13:24

"Rosetta Stone (as per Cambridge University Press) have used the blanket term 'Chinese' throughout - interspersed with 'Mandarin' and
'Mandarin Chinese'. Good enough for them..."

And demostrates why you are so at home with the brexit philosophy of racism.....

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 13:26

Who Are Doing New Special Brexitannian Definition Of Censorship

"Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication, or other information, on the basis that such material is considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or "inconvenient."

I put myself in the 'inconvenient' category. Grin

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 13:27

I forgot - 'racism' as well. Grin

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 13:29

I was called 'stupid' for referring to the 'Chinese' language.

New Brexitannian Definition of "Suppression" now Grin

DGRossetti · 08/05/2020 13:47

Just for the avoidance of doubt (or thinking) I think the UK deserves the best possible. Why would it not ? As a rich developed country, fortunate enough to enjoy a temperate climate with comparatively little risk from nature it should be able to look after it's citizens to the envy of the world.

I take absolutely no pleasure from seeing the UK stumble, fumble and look like it's shoelaces are tied together because I think the UK population deserve better.

Anyone who is satisfied with the current UK response to this crisis, compared to what the UK is capable of can't be that proud of their country.

Clavinova · 08/05/2020 13:48

New Brexitannian Definition of "Suppression" now

Synonyms: inhibition, blocking, checking, restriction.

"bullying is deliberately designed to suppress and control the target." Wink

DGRossetti · 08/05/2020 13:50

I'm still struggling to see how Clav is being "suppressed" ? Especially as they are able to post here that they are being suppressed.

Maybe we should wait to see the violence inherent in the system ?

mrslaughan · 08/05/2020 13:52

...... and I think it has been amply demonstrated why it was completely ignorant. Instead of learning that there is vibrant diversity in language across Asia, that there really isn't 1 language called "Chinese" you confined to pursue your ethnocentric observations.

It's that attitude that will never make the UK the power it once was, as for people to take you seriously you need to be able to learn....

prettybird · 08/05/2020 13:52

I no longer identify with the UK as "my" country Hmm

I do however watch the leader of my country every day and have been impressed by her performance at the daily press briefing, as well as the senior representatives who accompany her.

LouiseCollins28 · 08/05/2020 13:52

“I dont take pleasure..” DGR? [hmmm] Pull the other one, it has bells on. Your posts daily highlight your contempt for the UK and all she stands for.

New Brexitannian Definition of "Bullying" Grin

mrslaughan · 08/05/2020 13:55

Wow Clav - you really do have a victim mentality! I never knew that politely pointing out ignorance, and then offering to educate someone out of there ignorance could be perceived as bullying - but then , that's your problem, not mine.

TatianaBis · 08/05/2020 13:55

?? 🤔

DGRossetti · 08/05/2020 13:57

Odd, for someone that "won" Brexit.
