Another one here Autumn saying thanks for that thread link. Read it last night in it’s entirety and it was a fascinating read. Agree with Limer (and other PPs) that it was refreshing for its lack of verbal insults and a tad frustrating in that it’s what we have discussed on here for many, many months if not years. Should be shared more widely I think (especially in MN).

SingingLily · 18/12/2019 10:20

There's a search-and-rescue going on in Westminster today. Sir Lindsay Hoyle intends to wear the Speaker's ceremonial regalia for the State Opening of Parliament tomorrow - a statement, I think, of his intention to return the Speakership to its rightful place after it was so badly tarnished by the previous incumbent. However, the wig is nowhere to be found.

What has Bercow done with it? Is he holding it to ransom? You know, "Give us a second referendum or the wig gets it?" I wouldn't put it past him.

Today's Telegraph cartoon...

The Brexit Arms: Here it is! MERRY BREXIT!!!
BoswellSolver · 18/12/2019 10:29

@dirtyrottenscoundrel I've thought the same thing about the wasted time.
The hours upon hours of time spent writing up walls of ranting theory, info, opinion etc...it's just gobsmacking!
Some posters have been at it as a full time job almost!!

All for nothing! We all get a vote, and unless you are actually a politician, that's it as far as influence goes.
I'm even more glad I didn't waste time justifying myself since before the referendum, and I won't now.

Why should i give them any insight, when they just want to stomp about, throwing handfuls of shit at anyone who tries. Like angry chimps the lot of them.
They can go ahead and eat their hatred for comfort now.

howabout · 18/12/2019 10:33

Holly and Lily the non-SNP MP had Party support withdrawn before the GE but when it was too late to remove them from the ballot and re-select. The comments relate to twitter and iirc some debate about whether they are out of context. There were also Labour and Tory candidates in same boat. Lots of smearing and trawling through SM from all sides and very dirty campaign all round in Scotland, so hard to know the truth.

Jo Swinson successfully took the SNP to court over lying about her on campaign literature and still lost her seat - not saying the SNP were worse than the rest, but gives an indication of the scale of it all.

Re my comments yesterday. My FB feed is tame in comparison to the stuff coming out from activists on all sides.

hospitalityinspector · 18/12/2019 10:35

Walking that Spanish video. Grin

Dream team RLB and AR? Is this what we have to look forward to? Heaven help us. Confused

howabout · 18/12/2019 10:39

So fed up with all the Labour navel gazing. They need to get off the TV and go and talk to each other and the electorate.

Forgot my manners Blush

Morning all Brew

howabout · 18/12/2019 10:45

On a lighter note.

Humza is fair brightening up twitter these days (I don't follow him but others keep linking so are clearly also appreciating his efforts)
He's laying off the political propaganda and asking for tips on how to get the baby to sleep. Also trying to solve a case of mistaken identity after someone wrote to him thanking him for being a good Samaritan.

Trust you're all pure jel - turns out Glasgow has 2 of him. Xmas Smile

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 18/12/2019 10:46

Morning guys, feeling Sad today.

I don’t like seeing the lovely posters here being misrepresented so horribly. I’ve attempted to reason with them, but have been subjected to yet more insults. Quelle surprise. I’m considering my whole future here as of right now, I’m honestly not sure if I have the energy for it all anymore.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 18/12/2019 10:46

Sorry I have been quiet for a couple of days, the reason is highlighted above...

DustyDiamond · 18/12/2019 10:47

Fuck em Epic

That is all

OP posts:
howabout · 18/12/2019 10:49

a tad frustrating in that it’s what we have discussed on here for many, many months if not years.

Yep defo more than a whiff of telling yer Grannie how to sook eggs was my take. Lisa Nandy on Newsnight last night was unfortunately not much better.

SingingLily · 18/12/2019 10:49

Dream team RLB and AR? Is this what we have to look forward to? Heaven help us.

Morning, both.

It took Labour 14 years to repair the damage done by Michael Foot and expel Militant Tendency. Neil Kinnock did the heavy lifting there and sacrificed his own chances of winning by doing so. Those who knock Kinnock forget that. He did his Party a great service.

Now Labour needs someone to do a Kinnock and expel Momentum. Instead, they are turning to RLB. She supported Jezbollah's leadership bid in 2015. Her own bid is being openly supported by John McDonnell and Karie Murphy. FGS. #LaboursNotListening.

Forget ten years of Tory government. If RLB is the solution to the Labour Party's woes, we are looking at fifteen years of Tory government, because she will stymie the recovery and kick it into the long grass.

SingingLily · 18/12/2019 10:51

Morning, Epic,

You've battled valiantly for years. You've done your best. But you can't reason with the haters. Stay here with us and rest for awhile.

BoswellSolver · 18/12/2019 11:00

@EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit stay here. If they suddenly find that their hate and bullying still isn't working to win hearts and minds, then they can find another source of leavers/tories. We tried and they told us to fuck of, so why bother.

SingingLily · 18/12/2019 11:03

For an instant mood-lifter, Epic, go and watch Walking's Spanish TV video again.

It's impossible to watch without collapsing with laughter.

howabout · 18/12/2019 11:10

Matthew Goodwin
"...If this was just about Brexit or Mr Corbyn then we wouldn't be seeing the same structural tensions playing out from one country to the next. Britain's Labour is actually lucky. If we had any other type of electoral system they'd have imploded into two or three parties by now"

Going back to discussions on FPTP vs PR. This is why I think PR weakens Opposition and therefore democracy.

Shock Jess Phillips and I are in agreement:
"I understand why it has to happen, but everyone trying to stand somewhere on a line with which sort of Labour they are is entirely irrelevant to the public, it's setting up for a fight with each other rather than thinking about the country."

Matthew and I also agree on Sir Keir's Leadership pitch today:
"Unimpressive take on Labour's woes from Keir Starmer. Blames defeat on "Get Brexit Done" slogan - like blaming Remain's defeat on "Take Back Control". No mention at all of deeper, structural challenges facing progressives & what a new electoral alliance might look like"

Read Sir Keir's Guardian piece and it's just a mess of virtue signalling contradictions - bit like his famous 6 tests for a Brexit Deal.

howabout · 18/12/2019 11:12

I need some positive Get Brexit Done stuff from the man actually in charge - off to search.

SingingLily · 18/12/2019 11:15

If it's any consolation, Epic, have a look at my post last night at 23.19 and then I'll tell you that the same family member and his family are coming to stay with us for two nights over Christmas.

Won't that be a merry time for all?

I may have to hide all my back copies of The Spectator, cancel my subscription to the Telegraph and prune the bookshelves of a number of biographies. Wonder how much room is in the loft?

On the other hand, I could ask Amazon if I could rename my Echo "Rupert Murdoch" and make repeated requests while they are here.

"Rupert Murdoch, what time is it?"
"Rupert Murdoch, will it rain today?"
"Rupert Murdoch, who is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom?

howabout · 18/12/2019 11:16

WTF
BBC leading its website with Tony Blair.
No wonder they get accused of irrelevance at best.

SingingLily · 18/12/2019 11:21

BBC leading its website with Tony Blair.
No wonder they get accused of irrelevance at best.

The trouble is, Howabout, that whatever people think of Tony Blair, he knew a thing or two about how to win elections and on this, he's right.

The deeper problem is that both he and the BBC are considered to be far right by the very people they are trying to reach.

BBC far right? Yes, I know that's risible. But last night, I learned that Rupert controls the BBC too. Secretly...

That's why there's no point in trying to reason with some people. The others, the ones who get it, are going to have to make a decision to jettison the unsalvageable if they hope to move forward.

MarySidney · 18/12/2019 11:50

Morning all (just about).

I was quite liking Lisa Nandy when she was speaking in Parlt yesterday in support of Sir Lindsay Boyle as Speaker. Until she started wittering on about how people were amazed that an MP representing a northern working class constituency was 'allowed' to become Speaker.

Have people forgotten George Thomas? The most working class, and probably the most respected, Speaker in recent times.

AutumnRose1 · 18/12/2019 11:50

Epic "I’m considering my whole future here as of right now, I’m honestly not sure if I have the energy for it all anymore."

what? On MN? Here, in the pub?

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 18/12/2019 11:51

Thanks guys,

I think however, on balance it’s probably time for me to say my goodbyes. It’s not doing my mental health any good, I can just about take the constant goading and insults, and have tried to develop a rhino hide over it. But I just cannot accept being cast as a racist without any truth or foundation, nor the other posters here. I abhor racism as do others here and have called out BOTH boris and JC’s lot for it. It’s wholly unfair and untrue. I’ve had enough. I voted differently to them, because I wanted to leave the ever expanding wasteful EU empire and I didn’t want to live in a socialist dystopia. That’s it. I don’t need to be villified for those positions and neither should any of you.

I’ve had a laugh here and lovely support with my RL issues, you have all been amazing, for that I am eternally grateful. I’ve tried ignoring their posts in the past, but when they get ignored there, they just invariably come here to goad instead. I feel like Mumsnet was supposed to be a fun supportive environment for all and for many years I would have agreed. Instead it’s just turned into a cesspit of intolerant views and hardened ideologies full of thought police. I would have loved if we could have had a reasoned and tolerant debate like the FWR one running. Sadly, they are just discussing and agreeing with points we have discussed for years and been ridiculed for, so although I am thrilled about it, it feels somewhat bittersweet. Instead, we (still) just get name calling and bile.

I’m sorry all, take care xxxx 🕊 ❤️

Epic.

dirtyrottenscoundrel · 18/12/2019 11:52

Oh absolutely, many of them were on here all day every day.
I’d be gutted that I wasted so much of my time & energy, which is why I never got too involved with all the arguments.
Call me a thick ignorant racist all you like, we’re still leaving the EU.

howabout · 18/12/2019 11:52

The trouble is, Howabout, that whatever people think of Tony Blair, he knew a thing or two about how to win elections and on this, he's right.

Don't disagree, BUT:
he's out the UK most of the time
he's not an MP or a Lord or in any way part of the Labour Party machinery
times have moved on somewhat since 1997 when he was springboarding from almost all of Scotland and Wales.

I come back to my earlier point. Labour need to get out of the media and go and do some homework. Blair with the BBC's help makes this impossible. The Tories have learnt the lesson about "never interrupt your opponent ..."

If there is no functioning Opposition then surely it falls to the 4th Estate to at least attempt to hold the Govt to account - joining in picking over the corpse of Labour is at best irrelevant and at worst providing all the diversion a Tory Party with a solid majority could ever hope for.

I suspect the reason for it is not BBC right wing bias but rather a fair amount of soul searching from the various pundits who are just now working out how far off script they have been for 3 years and looking for guidance from fellow bemused travellers.
