Landlady is that good news? I'm not good with figures, is that 100 seat majority?

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 08/11/2019 22:28

XingMing do you think brexit will make things better or worse in your area of the SW?

HateIsNotGood · 08/11/2019 22:29

Yes Xing, some of the brighter ones do go, and come and go - I'm very content in the right location without much money. And you're very correct about educational opportunities - DS and I had to leave for a few years so that he could access the correct SN education as there was none available here.

Although we don't now live in the countryside, totally priced out, we're glad we're back and hope to get back to the rural one day.

It's not very cool here either, but they're gradually making their way here. The ones with south-eastern property equity.

Kudos to you for paying more than the public sector - locally they have god-status in terms of wages, t&c's, etc here.

GenuineQuestions · 08/11/2019 22:35

Bercow..

Was that a genuine question?
It wasn't specified so I hope you don't mind me jumping in there..

GenuineQuestions · 08/11/2019 22:45

Omg. Another rabbi has spoken out about anti sematism flourishing under corbyn.

Another deeply moving article. What's wrong with these people!! It's shameful!

DustyDiamond · 08/11/2019 22:49

is that 100 seat majority?

There's 650 MPs but I can't remember if you don't count the speaker & deputies or not, soz

376 Tory seats would def be a majority Parliament though (maybe about 50?)

OP posts:
XingMing · 08/11/2019 22:50

@bercow, I wish I could say decisively, but I can't. Voting suggests that it's edging left but there's also a steady retirement incoming trend voting for stasis. We have a lot of new houses being built locally; no new jobs I see advertised. It is being said that the houses are being leased to authorities from outside the area. If they bring ideas and their own employment, they will be welcomed. If their numbers keep wage rates at NMW, rather less welcome.

SingingLily · 08/11/2019 23:01

Just popping in for a moment to catch up.

Landlady is that good news? I'm not good with figures, is that 100 seat majority?

376 seats would give the Conservatives a majority by 55 seats.

As Dusty says, the total number of MPs is 650. A majority is 50% + 1. However, there are seven Sinn Fein MPs who have never taken up their seats, plus the Speaker and two Deputy Speakers who do not vote because they must remain neutral and impartial. The magic number is 321 for a majority. 376 would be a healthy margin.

SingingLily · 08/11/2019 23:17

XingMing, South West here too 👋

Our MP is very active in terms of encouraging businesses to start up or invest locally and her efforts are finally starting to pay off although it's been a long haul. She is also keenly involved in putting the focus on adult care provision (local demographics) and promoting community cohesion through better public transport and services. I had my reservations about her for awhile because of her Remain stance. She probably dreaded my emails dropping in her inbox. Grin However, she has convinced me that she values democracy more than staying in the EU and her voting record supports that. I'm happy with her. Fortunately, she has a very healthy majority and although this constituency has - rather startlingly - been named on the Remainer Alliance hit list, I don't think she needs to lose any sleep over that.

GenuineQuestions, would love to know where to find that article. I see that David Blunkett ripping the Labour Party to shreds is the big front page story in tomorrow's Telegraph.

It's the timing of it all, isn't it? Former Labour MPs and party grandees coming forward practically every day to publicly mourn the loss of the party they once knew. Someone's coordinating it - and it isn't Dimitri. This is coming from within the Labour family itself.

ArseDarkly · 08/11/2019 23:34

The Tories must have been really rattled by Corbyn's head start, they're pulling out all the stops in the smear campaign. It's pretty crude stuff though...so that means it probably is Dmitri

Brexit Arms
SingingLily · 08/11/2019 23:42

Doubtful. Dimitri's contract only ran till 31 October and he's off dealing with personal health issues.

Where did you find that image? With a meaningless slogan like "Work harder, Comrade" and no clever visual message, it's more likely to be an amateur effort.

DustyDiamond · 09/11/2019 00:16

Posted twice now Lily so either a personal favourite or memes have already been rationed 🤷🏻‍♀️

Walkingdeadfangirl · 09/11/2019 00:20

Bear, dear corbyn is turning so many people away
I don’t doubt that, but they won’t vote Tory

And yet the TV news channels are finding people who have been life long labour voters saying they will vote Conservative for the first time in their lives (not least a few Labour MPs).

SingingLily · 09/11/2019 00:24

or memes have already been rationed

😂🤣😂🤣 Dusty. That, plus a very limited repertoire all round.

Pleased to hear about your son's driving test success. Get a black box! You'll rest easier.

Signing off now till tomorrow. Sleep well. You too, Epic.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 09/11/2019 00:27

Whats happened to Epic ? 😮😮😮😓😓😓

ArseDarkly · 09/11/2019 00:37

Some like to use indiscriminate, ephemeral memes, I prefer to have a few classic pieces but naturally they won't appeal to everyone Grin

DustyDiamond · 09/11/2019 00:44

Thanks all for the congrats for my baby driver 😍
He's getting black box fitted next weekend (relief!)

Epic had an attack of the vapours Walking - she said she was pissed off with trolly mctrollfaces but I suspect it was really the fear of a Corbyn dystopian future where we may be forced to compete in the Hunger Games....

Hoping she'll be back tomorrow 🙏🕯🥰

bellinisurge · 09/11/2019 07:59

I thought Obama recently made a big thing about telling people to grow the fuck up with their weasel words and virtue signalling.

bellinisurge · 09/11/2019 08:00

Btw, congratulations on your new driver. Hope that means you get lifts to the pub now. Smile

SingingLily · 09/11/2019 08:03

Obama did indeed, Bellini. Good morning! The Landlady is not about - probably changing barrels in the cellar - so I've got the kettle on. Fancy a cuppa?

Limer · 09/11/2019 08:34

Coffee for me please, I've already been brought a real one while sitting in bed! But would love another virtual one.

I was out at the pub late last night (the real pub, not this one!), the general consensus among the regulars is that the Labour Leave voters who switched to Brexit in the EU elections will do so again. That will split the Labour vote here and potentially let the Conservatives in. Interesting.

SingingLily · 09/11/2019 08:48

Coffee for you here, Limer Brew

Really interesting analysis of all the polls by Electoral Calculus this morning. A significant number of low income voters are deserting Labour.

There was always a huge question about how Jezza would square the circle and appeal to the Remain-voting affluent Islington types while keeping the Leave-voting 'just getting by' Northern and Midland voters.

I really really hate the fact that those who have been continually disadvantaged throughout life - upbringing, education, job availability, housing availability - feel so politically homeless too.

GenuineQuestions · 09/11/2019 08:48

Morning everyone.
Does the pub do juices?
I'd like something to combat the liver damage please, beetroot? Celery, ginger...

Cheers.

So a new barrage of attack for corybn from within the bosom of his family.
Unless Putin has a mole in David blunket.
My fear... Is now that corbyn will stand down?
Of course I'm watching in horror labour's demise but right now I want tory to win to get brexit through. The last thing I want is corbyn gone at this moment and starmer standing in Shock

BercowsPoliticalPumpkin · 09/11/2019 08:49

Yes, it was a genuine question. All my questions are. I don't know anything about the SW apart from the fact it's beautiful and too far for us to visit without it costing a small fortune. Why are the lower paid jobs not being done? Who did them before and why aren't they doing them now? Is it the same as ?east anglia (can't remember exactly where, sorry) where lots of these jobs were carried out by European immigrants and due to brexit they have now gone "home" as they don't feel welcome? Or is it because local people are moving away for better opportunities in cities like Bristol and further afield?
