Love it Dusty he he he he!

@bellinisurge

It is entirely your legal and moral right to opt out of voting or spoil your ballot based on your own set of principles. You know that already and don’t need me to tell you. But I felt it needed saying anyway. I totally understand and agree with your position, despite having a slightly different position myself.

To everyone else, this may seem out of context with the thread at the mo, so apologies for the derail. Hopefully Bellini knows what I am getting at.

SingingLily · 08/11/2019 08:28

Morning, Epic! Morning, all!

Morning, Landlady, a builders brew please when you're ready. Do you need any help in the kitchen?

I see the former Squeaker has been life-modelling again 😂😂😂. At least he'll have that to fall back on now he's finally stood down.

I'm keeping an eye on the Remainer Alliance and in today's news, the Conservatives have called upon the elections watchdog to investigate the pact as it is clearly undemocratic. However, it is already breaking down.

Mike Powell, LibDem candidate, has resigned rather than stand aside for Plaid Cymru and is standing as an independent instead. I'm expecting more, as the news sinks in that the Greens and PC have been massively disadvantaged by Jo's Cunning Plan.

Still, much of it will be academic anyway. Chelmsford is one of the target seats. Chelmsford! Virtually the SE capital of Leave 😂. Good luck with that one, Jo.

She has, however, magnanimously ceded Cannock Chase (Leave 68.9%) as well as the previous LibDem vote share of a magnificent 1.66% to the Greens. If they can keep that, and add it to their own vote share of 1.7%....they'll still lose their deposit. Still, it will save the Lib Dems £500. Every little helps, eh, Jo?

bellinisurge · 08/11/2019 08:32

I know what you are getting at @Epicwaffle . Thanks for the mention.
A cuppa for me today would do nicely. Harder stuff later.Grin

Morning @SingingLily

Fucking hell... do you need a chlorination bath? Or eye bleach? Shock Grin.

That’s really interesting about the pact, it never occurred to me it might be against the rules! Is Head Girl Jo going to get a detention? 😱Grin

Thanks for the run down! I haven’t been following the news too much in the last few days, DS has been at home poorly so we have been watching other stuff. In many ways I have quite enjoyed the break! Grin

Epicwaffle · 08/11/2019 08:38

Wink morning bellini I’m sure that #comradehilda won’t mind if I step behind the bar in her absence and grab you and singing a nice morning cuppa! BrewBrew

SingingLily · 08/11/2019 08:44

Is Head Girl Jo going to get a detention?

Nah, the Electoral Commission works very very slowly so any sanction is likely to be retrospective. However, it gives the Conservatives a lovely attack line on how Head Girl Jo is really making a mockery of both the Liberal bit and the Democrat bit. I think that she should now be invited to the leaders' debate and grilled on it.

Thanks for the cuppa! Hope DS is feeling a little better today.

Morning, Bellini! I sympathise with your position too. Hope that came across yesterday.

DustyDiamond · 08/11/2019 09:20

Morning Comrades!

Brew for all and a vat of Vodka for Bellini

In solidarity with Epic, I too get where you're coming from Bell - I don't envy you.
If I was a remain voter I'd be in exactly the same predicament.

Head girl Jo is coming unstuck quite quickly - it seems the WM bubble actually really didn't understand the mood of the country after all. I didn't think they did but was hoping to be proved wrong 🤷🏻‍♀️

People are fucked off with Brexit, yes, but the disquiet is far more to do with democracy as a whole - Brexit just happens to be the vehicle it's being shown up via.

Refusing to accept a direct democratic mandate is bad enough, robbing the electorate of choice (by standing down candidates) is an outrage!
Is that not what happens in dictatorships ffs...?!

Parliament belongs to the people, not to MPs or to political parties.

Morning all, I agree with you all about Jo S. The other thing I'm wondering is just how much effort she is going to have to put in to keep her own seat!! After all she lost in 2015 and only got in 2017 narrowly!
Jeremy Vine is discussing this now on 5.

SingingLily · 08/11/2019 09:57

Morning, Dusty and Doubletrouble Smile

Another fine article here from CapX about the dire choices Scottish voters are facing.

https://capx.co/in-scotland-this-election-will-be-about-much-more-than-brexit/?

I'm definitely staying up on election night 🗳. It's going to be a nail biter.

Off to do some RL stuff now. See you later!

DustyDiamond · 08/11/2019 10:00

I think the SNP are gunning for her Double

She's just got so caught up in her own hubris!

I blame the continuity remain campaign tbh - they were so visible & vocal that it was easy to think that there was massive support for overturning the ref

Step outside the bubble & you find the equally as numerous opponents to remain

And swelling the leaver numbers is Remain voters who value democracy over remaining the EU

That’s an interesting point.

Theoretically that might be the case but the problem is, as is being widely demonstrated by our politicians, we won’t actually end up with any more of a democracy, we’ll just have left the EU and added to the problems which need to be addressed.

It’s proper screwed up,

Doubletrouble99 · 08/11/2019 10:39

Exactly Dusty, SNP will be lapping this all up. That's what I've always thought about the remain marches too, we are the silent majority.
Off out now so will catch up tonight.

Epicwaffle · 08/11/2019 10:45

Hi bear! WinkSmile

I’m of the opinion that at least we remove one layer of largely undemocratic and unyielding rule, we can tackle the other part at the ballot box as we go along. Of course, you can certainly argue that our options at the GE ballot box are not exactly backed up by a truly democratic position. But for now, it’s what we have.

Epicwaffle · 08/11/2019 10:46

Ok, reading my post back, I’ve probably not positioned my overall point terribly well, but I’m getting ready to go out. Apologies.

Hollycatberry · 08/11/2019 11:36

Comrade Sturgeon on the war path this morning. Talking about locking Tories out of power. I wonder how much she actually helps in the Tories in England with her choice of language?

I also checked the EU ref result in Scotland, although the %age suggest large remain outcome (62%) the numbers are approx 1m leave voters to 1.6m remain voters. So SNP bang on about being dragged out of EU is really just about 600k voters going for remain over leave. On that fairly narrow margin, I dont think they have a cast iron mandate to only advocate remain.

I really feel for the 1m leave voters in Scotland who must be wondering why the SNP gives them no representation?

Bearbehind · 08/11/2019 11:56

Again, I understand your point in theory epic but I think in reality, leaving the EU is just going to add a huge layer of complication to things that people simply didn’t even consider before, so things get worse not better.

I’m not advocating revoke as we’re long passed that, just that I don’t think Remainers generally believe we have to leave the EU to uphold democracy.

Trying to leave the EU has shown what a sham our democracy actually is. Leaving the EU won’t change that.

bellinisurge · 08/11/2019 12:34

"On that fairly narrow margin, I dont think they have a cast iron mandate to only advocate remain. " Don't think that's a rock you want to turn @Hollycatberry , considering the slim victory for Leave UK wide. Unless you give a shit about people who voted Remain, that is.

Hollycatberry · 08/11/2019 12:51

I care that the overall EU vote margins were narrow. That's why compromise is important, esp in HoC. The debate for most people has become too polarised and the language so divisive.

When you listen to SNP, you'd think all of Scotland voted to remain, that's the point I was trying to make. I don't hear them talk about the leave voters at all. Likewise, if you listen to the Brexit Party, you'd think all leavers want a hard brexit with no deal with the EU. I don't advocate anyone being ignored, that's when we end up in a place where people disengage with politics. But maybe we are past that point already, I don't know anymore.
