New thread.

General election 12th December 2019. Results out on Friday 13th. Unlucky day for some.

So this election is unusual in that it will focus primarily on Brexit and referendums with domestic issues tagged alongside, for some parties.

Rees-Mogg has made a major gaff about grenfell... And done a very rapid apology...

Dead cat alert...

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2019 11:55

JRM can't understand ordinary people & criticises them for being so stupid as to die Hmm

imo even most mc professionals with 6-figure salaries & / or PhDs would obey the fire brigade during a fire
Are the uc that different to everyone else ?
It may just be a Tory thing, a way to attack the Grenfell residents, as I've read similar statements by Tory journos

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

JRM’s comments reveal an astonishing blindspot for how most ordinary people respond to those with authority, especially in times of high stress or danger.

JRM has power, is a powerful man and is struggling to understand why those who have none wouldn’t question those who do.

In other words, in this case at least, he’s lacking common sense.

Victims' families slammed Jacob Rees-Mogg after he said
the 'common sense thing to do' would be to ignore the fire brigade's Stay Put advice
and leave.

RedToothBrush I've just had another letter from the LDs through my letter box this morning. There's been one most weeks for the past month or so and they do regular newsletters throughout the year. They stand a good chance of winning here and have my support. Lots of tactical voters here to get Wragg out. I'm more of a socialist but labour have little chance here and it's important to get the tories out.

DGRossetti · 05/11/2019 11:57

Jacob Rees-Mogg is facing calls to apologise after saying it would have been “common sense” for Grenfell residents to ignore the fire brigade's advice to stay in the building.

Well, if we can ignore official advice, let's start with the shite spouted by this vile cunt and his kith ....

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2019 11:58

Even if people ignore fire brigade advice and get killed because of it, it would be totally crass for a politician to blame them,
just to distract criticism of some decisions by penny-pinching management and Tories that were actually responsible for the tragedy.

Parly @parlyapp
The Speaker has granted a UQ to Dominic Grieve on the publication of the Intelligence and Security committee report on Russia.

Interesting...

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2019 12:06

Christopher Hope@christopherhope
. @Nigel_Farage suggests school children are taught that supporting Remain is “virtuous” and backing Leave is “evil” in classes - and this is why the Brexit Party does not have more younger supporters. #GE2019

I kind of get this idea of good versus evil in terms of remain v leave framing... But its not coming from schools...

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2019 12:16

The new Speaker may soon be denigrated as much as Brecow, if he keeps letting MPs ask questions ....

HoneysuckIejasmine · 05/11/2019 12:18

I'd like people's thoughts on my constituency. I live in the Tewkesbury constituency and Laurence Robertson is my MP. Hmm He has a huge majority (25,000 ish) with labour second and lib Dems a v poor third. Last two elections labour were second but lib Dems were previously the second party. I'm more naturally a lib dem. Tactical voting suggests labour. But I'm not sure. Will a constituency that have returned LR as their MP since it's inception ever swing as far as Labour? Or is this a classic case of softer Tories may vote LD instead. I just don't know what to do. I imagine Mr Robertson isn't going anywhere but I want to have the best go at getting rid.

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2019 12:20

Hadley Freeman @hadleyfreeman
I don't want to overthink Jacob Rees-Mogg, of all empty vessels masquerading as human beings. But that Grenfell line feels v Trumpian to me and, most of all, v Steve Bannon

Maybe it was spontaneous, and of course people shd criticise him for it. But I'm having major flashbacks to Trump criticising McCain for being a POW and how that kind of say-it-like-an-idiot posturing became the defining tone of the 2016 election, v much to the right's benefit

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2019 12:20

We need to explain this is just Brexit Part 1, to those who think the WA "gets Brexit done":

Lewis Goodall@lewisgoodall

All of the arguments, extension or no extension, deal or no deal are destined to replay again in the next Parliament, just about a different deal.
And once again the govt has boxed itself in.

As this tweet tacitly concedes it’d be more accurate to say “Get Brexit (pt.1) done”.

Liz Truss@trussliz

We will not be extending the Brexit transition period beyond 2020.

The British people have waited long enough for Brexit.

We will be able to negotiate a good free trade deal with the EU and other partners in that timeframe.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/11/2019 12:28

To Trump - who avoided military service via a handy doctor - a POW is a failure

To many on the right, a poor person is a failure, but somehow "coining it" on benefits
A disabled person - who also dares to be poor - is a failure, probably a cheat too

Blame people for any problem in their lives

  • unless they are rich of course, in which case they maybe deserve sympathy

Very rightwing people may have always thought such things, but it's only in the last few years that they have dared say them

  • because enough voters have been groomed to think the same way, blaming the victims
ListeningQuietly · 05/11/2019 12:39

Chris Chope plans to stand again as MP for Christchurch

  • so that bolthole for Boris is out
but the fact that he took the knighthood to go away after his woman hating legislative antics and then is staying on speaks volumes about the sort of people running Tory party Branches

Perhaps biggest judgement call by @joswinson today was her “absolutely, categorically” ruling out any Lib Dem votes putting @jeremycorbyn Corbyn into No.10.
In a hung parl, refusing to back him in a conf vote could mean @BorisJohnson getting in No.10 instead.

"At what point would that erode Farages "right" to appear on our screens every 5 minutes ?"

When it's no longer entertaining. Farage drives ratings, thanks to his negative publicity.

Strictly speaking, you are right. But watching JRM squirm after his obscene comments and Johnson apologise over his Brexit failure is too delicious not to enjoy.

Teachers in my kids' secondary school have no problem pushing a Remain Good, Leave Bad message
(Same with Tories Are Bad messaging 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Which is the Japanese military doctrine that led to the atrocities during WW2. A soldier should die before surrender.

Has BJ chosen the worst ever GE slogan for an incumbent ? 🤔

"#BritainDeservesBetter" Confused

That's BJ's slogan ? Confused

BJ is the incumbent Prime Minister,
the leader of the Tory Party, who have been in power for nearly 10 years

It's a surprisingly apt slogan ..... for Labour

Maybe BJ chose "#BritainDeservesBetter" before Labour or Greens could !

TatianaLarina · 05/11/2019 13:30

In any sane world RM would have to resign. Sadly our world is not sane.
