New thread.

General election 12th December 2019. Results out on Friday 13th. Unlucky day for some.

So this election is unusual in that it will focus primarily on Brexit and referendums with domestic issues tagged alongside, for some parties.

Perhaps Labour or the LDs should use the same slogan!

"When I look at Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn, I am absolutely certain I could do a better job than either of them."

Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson says she "never thought I would stand here and say that I'm a candidate to be Prime Minister".

Perhaps biggest judgement call by @joswinson today was her “absolutely, categorically” ruling out any Lib Dem votes putting @jeremycorbyn Corbyn into No.10.

In a hung parl, refusing to back him in a conf vote could mean @BorisJohnson getting in No.10 instead.

Brilliant - I knew there was a reason I liked her! Smile It may siphon off some soft Tory voters, but it makes Magic Grandpa’s path to power a lot harder!

Am not sure how this helps any of us get the #PeoplesVote that we so urgently need
However frustrating Labour’s position on #Brexit is (and it is), they are at least committed to a confirmatory ballot
Hugely self indulgent to put party interest above national interest

Why, oh why, didn’t the Libdems elect Ed Davey as leader? All the parties seem completely bonkers when it comes to leadership.

Mistigri · 05/11/2019 13:43

I'd like people's thoughts on my constituency. I live in the Tewkesbury constituency

@HoneysuckIejasmine there is actually a site that gives you all the tactical voting recommendations from the different sites, so you can make your own comparisons. I'll post it here if I can find it again.

In your constituency I think it depends on how many of those tories are strong remainers. It was a marginal leave constituency in 2016 but anecdotally SW England and Welsh border constituencies do seem to have moved more towards remain than the country as a whole.

But tbh that's a large majority and your vote probably isn't going to overturn it, so I think in your shoes I would vote LD on the basis you lean LD anyway. It does not look like a constituency Labour can win.

"The conservatives know they can’t do what they want to do under the banner of Thatcherism so they are trying to do it under the banner of Brexit instead”

This is a good message if they can articulate it clearly.

So far Labour are running better campaign than the LDs and Tories Shock

JustAnotherPoster00 · 05/11/2019 13:48

So far Labour are running better campaign than the LDs and Tories

Thats why theyve got to try and keep the narrative away from Labour policy and keep it focused on 'Magic Grandpa'

Icantreachthepretzels · 05/11/2019 13:50

In any sane world RM would have to resign. Sadly our world is not sane.

our fave copy and paster is over on the JRM thread defending him.

I hope everyone on twitter is choosing one of the many terrible things the tories have done since 2010 and followed up with #BritainDeservesBetter. It must be so easy to get it trending against them - as long as everyone joins in.

CendrillonSings · 05/11/2019 13:51

Oh don’t worry, your far-left policies will be ripped to shreds as soon as you decide if you dare actually putting the abolition of private education and charging IHT on primary residences in your manifesto...

JustAnotherPoster00 · 05/11/2019 13:52

I hope that is going to be their campaign though, in the 1st and 2nd Labour leadership contest the narrative was 'Anything is better than Commie Corbyn' then they tried that in 2017 which cost May dearly I'm hoping the same strategy will pay off this time

MockersthefeMANist · 05/11/2019 13:54

Jo Swinson says she "never thought I would stand here and say that I'm a candidate to be Prime Minister"

Nobody is. Prime Ministers are appointed, not elected.

derxa · 05/11/2019 13:58

Why, oh why, didn’t the Libdems elect Ed Davey as leader? All the parties seem completely bonkers when it comes to leadership. Jo Swinson sounds as mad as a box of frogs. Poor Keir Starmer must wake up every morning and think 'Oh God Jeremy's still the leader.
As for Boris well... it's all been said before. Aaaaaaaaaagh!

placemats · 05/11/2019 13:59

JRM needs to resign. His apologies run hollow. He would never have made that comment re 911. His words will resonate throughout the world. Shameful.

I've had an awful day. Sudden death in the family and it's not going well.

Peace and love to all who wish to resolve the impasse. xx

I suspect my 2yr old would make as good a job of PM as some of the current party leaders. At least she's cute when having a tantrum.

Where I live is ridiculously Tory with Labour a very poor 2nd. In theory I guess I should vote Labour but I suspect I will actually vote LD so at least I can't be told I voted "for Brexit".
