Brexit

GE is on! Remainers how will you vote?

Just that really! The General Election is on, either 11th Dec or a few days before but it's going to happen now that Labour have agreed. Tactical voting websites are being prepared as we speak.

If you are a remainer, who will you vote for?

(And if any leavers lurk here, will you vote for Tories or Brexit party?)

What the Tories are really good at is saying something - anything - repeatedly, ad infinitum, until it becomes some kind of received wisdom. They are very good at the messaging.

Hence why some people will still trot out that Labour caused a global financial crash, and never believe that austerity was a matter of ideology rather than economics. And that Brexit means Brexit and is "the will of the people".

twofingerstoEverything · 31/10/2019 12:25

The point is too many non UK in the UK.
Can you not see that England is losing its identity?

Oh dear, Mellow. You're hardly covering yourself in glory here.

So is my DC 'non-UK' because foreign dad, or is she 'UK' in your book because one parent is British, thereby diluting the foreignness? I am really looking forward to your answer on this one.

And no, I don't see England is losing its identity because I see identity as a fluid thing.

I'll tell you something else that might horrify you. My own father was Irish, making us a right bunch of English-diluting mongrels. He arrived in the days of 'no dogs, no Blacks, no Irish' and worked/paid tax here for at least 60 years. How very terrible of him.

JacquesHammer · 31/10/2019 12:31

Can you not see that England is losing its identity?

No it isn’t.

I mean you’ve cited a Daily Mail article that refers to Yorkshire as evidence of what’s happening in London (clue, it’s not happening in Yorkshire either!)

Apologise for what? I don't care where you come from or what you stand for, who your children are, if you are male or female or anyone else on this board for that matter. You should apologize to me for calling me racist. However you don't know the meaning so I'll just have to ignore it.

If you want to live in a mishmash society. Good for you. I want to live within a strong culture not some wishy washy multi cultural society for a number of reasons. Anyway, I'm emigrating. So I'll be an immigrant.

JacquesHammer · 31/10/2019 12:36

Arf

twofingerstoEverything · 31/10/2019 12:39

What do you think the Government of the day should have done to restore the economy after the GFC?
Well, tigger, one of the things they could have done was to close tax loopholes and make sure that corporations paid the proper amount of tax and not expect the poor to bear the entire burden of 'austerity'.

twofingerstoEverything · 31/10/2019 12:40

Anyway, I'm emigrating. So I'll be an immigrant.
So there. That'll show us.

Sort of...only works until it doesn't - 'strong and stable' became a complete millstone round May's neck and 'get brexit done' might turn out the same to Johnson (hopefully!)

DarlingNikita · 31/10/2019 12:44

I don't care where you come from or what you stand for, who your children are But you do, don't you? You DO care about how many babies have a foreign parent. You DO care that the UK is now (as you call it) a 'mishmash/multi cultural society'.

You could at least stand by your views.

NameChangeNugget · 31/10/2019 12:47

I think it’s embarrassing how poorly the LibDems are polling despite their noise.
Polls are often wrong but, I can imagine Boris is quite disappointed with only having a 17 point lead over Corbyn

ArseDarkly · 31/10/2019 12:49

But then you'll have created another wishy-washy society Mellowsedge! Are you sure you've thought this through?? Grin

daisypond · 31/10/2019 13:08

Not another Leave voter who is emigrating/has emigrated, so they don’t have to live with consequences - and are rich enough or can get a work visa to enable them to emigrate. There seem to be a remarkable number of them.

prettybird · 31/10/2019 13:58

Hypocrites. Don't want immigrants here but are quite happy to be immigrants there Angry

twofingerstoEverything · 31/10/2019 14:05

They will be ex-pats, not immigrants, dontcha know?

Songsofexperience · 31/10/2019 14:07

I don't feel like rewarding the Lib dems for this stupid election strategy but will vote for them as they are the main opposition in my constituency. The Tory MP there has a tiny majority so I will vote to get one less Tory in parliament.
I'd vote Labour/Green/SNP/Plaid if they were in that position. For me it's ANYONE against Tories/BXP. We can sort out the rest later. A Tory/BXP majority right now would change this country forever. Not in a good way. At least for me the choice is crystal clear.

I'm hoping that a lot of our local Tory voters will defect to Brexit Party. They've already been all over the Tory MP's facebook page calling him a traitor for voting for TM's deal 3 times and refusing to support a no-deal. Hopefully, they'll waste their vote on the BP and reduce his super-safe majority. BP won't poll enough to win the constituency, so this would work in LD/Lab favour.

Graphista · 31/10/2019 14:34

LonelyPlanetMum excellent posts.

Trewser - that post by mellow was plain racist! I reported it for exactly that reason and it was rightly deleted. There should be NO place in British politics for racism EVER. I’ve also reported the subsequent posts by this poster. I’m disgusted by their views & comments.

Graphista · 31/10/2019 14:35

“Make no mistake their target is to create a minimal welfare state and minimal corporate tax and regulation.“ absolutely!

“Remember the 'no more money' note left at the Treasury?” Omg! That was a long running treasury dept in joke that was manipulated completely out of context!

“This country has had years of austerity trying to claw money back” which is NOT WORKING! You don’t make money, you don’t boost an economy by NOT investing in it, by making cuts to essential services, by not supporting its industries... look at what economists say NOT politicians. Protectionist policies DO NOT WORK.

“led the UK into recession, created the massive budget deficit which needed austerity to rectify” NO there was a GLOBAL recession which had nothing to do with that labour party’s actions (and anyone familiar with my views knows I’m no blairite!) and austerity HAS NOT WORKED.

Time to put socialism back in its box for another generation. Hopefully we’ll manage to nail it shut this time! Grin

@Mellowsedge

Oh, dear.

Apologise for what?
You can read, I take it? So you were able to read exactly what I posted and why I thought you should offer an apology? I will quote myself here to make it easier for you: "What I would like to know now is why you think it is an issue that "[n]ew born babies 30% have a foreign parent. 10% father's are Pakistan, 10% mothers are Polish"? What I would like to hear from you is an apology for insinuating that there is something problematic about my children's existence."

I don't care where you come from
Really? In that case, why on earth are you posting about it being problematic that a significant number of babies born in the UK have a foreign parent? Why are you complaining about migration?

You should apologize to me for calling me racist.
I did not at any point call you a racist. Read again, slowly and with some care. I did not, in fact, call you anything, although I said that your bigotry was offensive, which it is.

Coppersulphate · 31/10/2019 18:17

It should be obvious to everyone that mass immigration causes problems in the host community.
I hope freedom of movement will soon be a thing of the past and we can have a points based system. Australia manages it very well.
I hope Boris gets in with a big majority and gets us out of the EU as soon as he can.
I will be canvassing for the Conservatives.

Songsofexperience · 31/10/2019 18:36

coppersulphate
That points based system won't help.
From the Telegraph:

Interesting read for anyone wanting a Remain / anti-Tory majority

Moomin8 · 01/11/2019 00:16

Australia manages it very well.

Australia is a very racist country. Certainly not one to aspire to...
