Brexit

GE is on! Remainers how will you vote?

Just that really! The General Election is on, either 11th Dec or a few days before but it's going to happen now that Labour have agreed. Tactical voting websites are being prepared as we speak.

If you are a remainer, who will you vote for?

(And if any leavers lurk here, will you vote for Tories or Brexit party?)

Ugh I don’t know who to vote for. Previously always voted Labour but they’ve been absolutely useless as an Opposition to a shambles of a party. Lib Dem would be a wasted vote in my area (they got about 2% last time). Current SNP MP is actually really good but votes for SNP will be taken as proof we want independence and another divisive referendum is the last thing we need right now.

Justneedatemporaryname · 01/11/2019 07:22

When push comes to shove my feelings against Anorak Man are stronger than those against Boris so probably Conservatives for me.

'Anorak man'. Are you 12? 🙄

Trewser · 01/11/2019 08:52

Labour have been a truly terrible opposition, so I have no reason to think they'd be any better in power.

I think it's going to be another dog's breakfast and a waste of time and money!

Redspider1 · 01/11/2019 18:21

Can’t vote labour because of Corbyn. Just don’t know what he stands for, apart from sitting on the fence plus they are in favour of self ID. I have 2 DDs and don’t think it’s a good idea.
Can’t vote Tory as Boris is a lying git.
Don’t know the who Lib Dem leader is!
Confused

zafferana · 01/11/2019 18:52

I'm actually in a complete quandary and have no idea how to vote. Here's why:

Remainer
LD member
Tory seat that could go LD this time.
Great LD would-be MP.
Cretinous Brexiteer Tory MP.
But ... I feel Brexit needs to get done asap and I don't want to open the door to Labour.
So how do I vote?

TatianaLarina · 01/11/2019 19:30

Remain.

Dusty01 · 01/11/2019 22:14

Vote LD. Why wouldn’t you? We may never leave if the Tories don’t get a majority.

Brexit will never get done, even if Tories do get in. If/when we’re told it’s been done. It will drag on forever.

You could vote in a LD MP. We have a brilliant Labour MP here and even though we’ve got such an awful Tory government, having an MP that I DID vote for makes it all more bearable.

fedup21 · 01/11/2019 23:15
  • Remainer LD member Tory seat that could go LD this time. Great LD would-be MP. Cretinous Brexiteer Tory MP. But ... I feel Brexit needs to get done asap and I don't want to open the door to Labour. So how do I vote?*

Why wouldn’t you vote Lib Dem in that situation??

randomsabreuse · 02/11/2019 07:34

"Leaving" doesn't get Brexit done, it just gets it started. Many more years of uncertainty will follow. Which sucks, a lot, unless you are a hedge fund/currency speculator...

DippyAvocado · 02/11/2019 07:46

"Leaving" doesn't get Brexit done, it just gets it started.

Absolutely. The withdrawal agreement only covers the transition period to December next year. Future negotiations will last for years and dominate Parliament. The only way it can be done quickly is if we become part of existing structures like the EEA and Customs Union.

starfishcoffee · 02/11/2019 08:30

Labour, I think. Otherwise LD or Green. I'm not a huge fan of JC but the alternative is Boris Johnson - really?! Confused

mamandematribu · 02/11/2019 10:51

I'm not sure I'll vote this time. I don't like any of these clowns 🤡

lonelyplanetmum · 02/11/2019 10:55

You have to vote for the least worst clown.

You have to do something.

' The only thing necessary for the triumph of bad men is for good men to do nothing. ' or something like that.

zafferana · 02/11/2019 11:15

Why wouldn’t you vote Lib Dem in that situation??

Because the Lib Dems are committed to dragging this misery out endlessly. They've set themselves up as the party of remain and they have stated that they'll ally with the greens and Plaid Cymru to do whatever they can to thwart Brexit. I just want this stale mate to be over, because a) parliament will do nothing else until Brexit is decided and b) I feel we need some healing in this country. I'm tired of the Leave/Remain split and the endless acrimony. Half my family voted remain the other half voted leave - it's been absolutely toxic!

NoWordForFluffy · 02/11/2019 11:29

If we leave, it'll go on for years and years and years, @zafferana. You'll never hear the end of it.

zafferana · 02/11/2019 11:37

@NoWordForFluffy I know leaving the EU is only the start, but it is, at least, the start. The alternative is more of the stasis and hand wringing we've had for the past three years. Endless attempts to 'get a deal', endless votes in parliament that achieve nothing, endless speculating in the news, endless politicians scoring points off one another and doing nothing for the country. I'm sick of it. I want the starting pistol to be fired. In fact, this discussion has helped to solidify my position - I will hold my nose and vote Tory - because I want to get this done more than I want to support a third-string party that will never be in power.

Drabarni · 02/11/2019 11:49

Labour, because contrary to opinion JC happens to be the least racist and most helpful to my origins and culture.
He acknowledges all of the people murdered in the Holocaust, not only Jews, of which I'm part.
The first ever to outwardly support Roma, and people call him racist.
We all know how Cons treat ethnic minorities.

fedup21 · 02/11/2019 11:55

Because the Lib Dems are committed to dragging this misery out endlessly

It’s the Tories who are doing that.

Leave is the start of a process that will go on for years, I don’t know what people are expecting by saying they want it ‘done’. They will be disappointed.

Kaddm · 02/11/2019 12:01

Remainer.
Not going to vote.
Nobody to vote for.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/11/2019 12:05

You were always going to vote for the hard right then, @zafferana. At least admit and own the fact that you don't give a shit about the poor and vulnerable in society.

I despair of anyone being so short sighted as to vote for the Tories.

zafferana · 02/11/2019 12:08

No, I wasn't. I am a LD member, but I don't agree with their position on this and I think their leader was a poor choice (I voted for Ed Davey). The poor and vulnerable are the ones who voted for Brexit, so I'm not sure why I'm the bad guy for saying 'Fine, you want it, get it done'.

Topseyt · 02/11/2019 12:13

Remainer here, and likely to vote LibDem.

I won't vote for the Conservatives, especially with Boris as leader. I'm not a particular fan of Corbyn either and the only other party likely to set up in this constituency is the Brexshit Party, which is a definite no-no.

So that leaves me only the LibDem option.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/11/2019 12:14

Because you're enabling the hard right government by voting for them, that's why.

And if the LDs win the GE, they'll have a democratic mandate to revoke. So there's no need for angst on that front.

I voted for Ed too. I would NEVER vote Tory though. Because I actually care about the more vulnerable members of society.

TheElementsSong · 02/11/2019 12:17

Because the Lib Dems are committed to dragging this misery out endlessly

This is literally the opposite of reality.

zafferana · 02/11/2019 12:29

if the LDs win the GE

But they won't, will they? They've never had that level of support, even at the height of their popularity, and the Remain vote will be split between LD, Green, SNP, Plaid Cymru and possibly Labour (who won't commit one way or the other, because they can't, their voter base being both Leave and Remain).

I worded that poorly @TheElementsSong. They haven't committed themselves explicitly, but say they win the GE (no chance) and say they have a second referendum, do you honestly think that even if Remain win that will end it once and for all? Of course it won't. There will be bitter and ongoing acrimony. Remember the Scottish Independence Referendum and how that was supposed to resolve the issue 'for a generation'?
