It's quite remarkable to watch the British press atm.

It's like it doesn't understand English. Well only if its English spoken by foreigners.

Merkel made the observation that the UK had spent two years looking at the Irish border but had failed to come up with a workable solution, and now Johnson has waltzed in and made statements about how the backstop must go, and only has 30 days in which this can be achieved.

The British press writes this up as Merkel giving the UK a deadline to come up with a new solution.

Which is nonsense. The UK have a deadline to save itself, from itself and that's 31st October. This is a self imposed deadline.

Meanwhile comes out with the Brexiteer smack down that he didn't think the UK wS leaving the EU to regain its sovereignty only to become a vassalage or junior partner to the US.

Both these ideas being the result of leaving the EU have long been key issues. From before the ref. Both have been the UK's to solve in order to get the terms the UK wants from a deal.

The referendum was about choosing to align with the EU or to ditch that and rights and align closely with the US. Then Trump happened and the sell on this got harder, but still essentially the same. And it continues.

And then there was the Irish border. The magic solution to Brexit that doesn't break the GFA. I personally think there isn't one as long as the DUP have their red lines about the Irish sea.

So here we are. More than 3 years after the ref.

Leavers still have no plan. Apart for charge headlong over the cliff. Remains still have their heads wedged up their own backsides and also, after spending months criticising every one else on social media anyway who makes a stand again this bull shit.

Yet the newspapers fail to report what Merkel said or why the UK has this issue in the first place. Its an ongoing exercise in national delusion and self denial.

Reactions to the Amazon fires is interesting.

Labour pointing out tories supporting bolsonaro and therefore the destruction. The trade deals the tories are trying to make, contrast with EU planning trade sanctions in order to defend the Amazon rain forest.

I'm wondering if this could be an issue ( it is arguably the only issue, and always was far more important than the brexit) could be one to grease the wheels of cross party co operation.

And getting the youth involved.

And helping people see that the EU: is leading the way on the environment, again.

If this destruction could be curtailed now, we would be winners.( as in there might not be so many resource wars and flood refugees)

It's so much more important than brexit.

Dont worry outsomnia most who post here read widely in the UK at least, often the Irish Times and many sterotypical (Grin) remainers read german/French/italian.

GeistohneGrenzen · 23/08/2019 19:40

PMK

Outsomnia · 23/08/2019 19:44

@Hazardtired

I suppose I was referring to those who refuse to read anything other than their paper of choice, which will reflect their views naturally.

I read everything I can get my hands on about Brexit from any country, any source. The UK media is totally polarised from what I can see.

Johnson revoking in his sagging Y fronts with toast crumbed butter fingers is more likely to happen than a global change to stop or merely ease off a bit climate change.

(Mary Berry voice now that is a soggy bottom)

@RedToothBrush completely agree about Koch - saw the news and thought , "good", the felt bad, the refused to feel bad, as really he was an absurdly rich man who used his money for evil.....

Anyone seen Trumps latest? How he doesn't need China- the poster on here who suggested a form of (frontal lobe ?) dementia, I think has it spot on. He was bad when he was elected but he is now completely du-laley...but no less dangerous. When do you think everyone else will realise?

jasjas1973 · 23/08/2019 20:24

Reactions to the Amazon fires is interesting

Its a stark reminder how weak brexit leaves the UK, why should Brazil care what the UK does or doesn't do? but it will care what the far larger/more powerful EU does.

As late as last week, the uk's trade minister was hobnobbing with Brazils govt.

If you are a brexitier but care about the environment, perhaps you should take note

Brexiteers only care about leaving and giving the finger to the EU.

That is all they want. Nothing more, nothing less.

They do not care about the effect it will have on their friends, neighbours and the wider UK economy, and peace in NI of course.

I want a Brexiteer to respond. Not a Leaver, there are many ways to leave without a meltdown for many.

Thank you.

Peregrina · 23/08/2019 20:46

But, hey, Y2K and all that ?

Ha. Johnson and Co will find out the hard way, that it didn't fix itself without a lot of work.

prettybird · 23/08/2019 20:55

I also think Trump has fronto-temporal dementia: my mum had it, brought on by a fronto-temporal head injury Sad - and he reminds me of her in the early stages, in particular the way he walks, doesn't like slopes and the way he holds his head and jaw. Plus the way his language is simplifying. My mum, who had been an English teacher with a beautiful way with words, did this (in fact, it was the speech therapist who identified that her head injury "recovery" was going backwards) Sad

Socksontheradiator · 23/08/2019 20:57

Oh I need some brain bleach. Just had a nosey at a brexit fb page. They are so sure that everything is going to be wonderful. The denial of any potential difficulties is breathtaking!

Socksontheradiator · 23/08/2019 20:58

So sorry about your mum, Prettybird Flowers I agree, Trump does not look right.

ListeningQuietly · 23/08/2019 21:11

A Linkedin connection has been selected as a PPC for the Brexit party.
All the messages I'm getting regard it as career suicide for them.
Tee hee.

Place marking, I think. Could be peed my kimono Grin.

lonelyplanetmum · 23/08/2019 23:09

It means place marking...or place mat after a thread many years ago.

There's a Westministenders' Abbreviations thread here...

https://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/eureferendumm20166_/3492426-Westministenders-Abbreviation?msgid=84503730

prettybird · 23/08/2019 23:11

The explanation is in the "WM Abbreviations" thread that BigChocFrenzy linked to early on in the thread - along with other commonly used acronyms.

It's a mistyped variation of "Place Marking" => Place Mat King => Place Cat King and variants thereof Grin
