Westminstenders: Prime Minister Johnson

It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

I've not answered the questions Grin.

I love cats - am currently owned by 2 beautiful lilac point Siamese (evidence of my elitism Wink). However I'm a bit scared and apprehensive of dogs - although my BFF's dogs have taught me to at least tolerate well behaved dogs. Can't warm to them though Hmm

I have shopped at Boden - not recently but do need to have a look at them again as my flattering wrap tops are giving up the ghost, so I need to order some more. My mum also used to buy me stuff from Boden regularly - the last time just before her accident, which I got for my birthday a couple of months later. White cropped jeans which haven't won't out yet, as most of the time in the last 12 years I've not been able to get into them Blush

^The odds are much higher for Tory electoral oblivion

But then what would we be left with? That's the thing!

ListeningQuietly · 24/07/2019 15:03

Like dogs, prefer cats.
Get Boden at the charity shop
Have done a postal vote

get more work done when I'm lurking not posting Smile

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 15:05

We have no prime minister.

Assume the Conservative Party is now advertising on MN, although I didn't click to see where it went.

I had a post from the Conservative Party pop up in my FB feed yesterday, because a friend (who forgot how vigorously he denied being a member of the Tory party when we teased him about it at Uni) had posted how disgusted he was that Boris had been elected and how he was cancelling his membership forever "of the party I have supported for 35 years" (yes, I did the math).

It took an awful lot of self restraint (or was it wine Grin) for me not to post that it was his blind acceptance of the past 35 years which had led to yesterday.

I wonder what his colleagues will say when they see this public posting ?

Protesters blocking Johnson's path across the mall!!!

Late-ish PMK.

The smallest child's 5th birthday is dominating today's proceedings. As well as picking beans at the allotment and then processing them to get them frozen ASAP.

How many ministers were we expecting to resign and how many have? I think I anticipated more than I believe there have been so far.

Cats: not arsed, prefer dogs.

Boden: have shopped there (when I have a voucher) but it's not a regular thing.

Postal votes: very convenient given my work / commute. Would prefer them to continue (acknowledging there are issues).

ListeningQuietly · 24/07/2019 15:10

DGR
I've had the Tory adverts on my FB feed for about two weeks
they vanish if I refresh but reappear when I open a fresh tab
LOVE the comments on them

prettybird · 24/07/2019 15:12

Forgot the postal vote question Blush

I like to vote in person as I like the whole process of exercising democracy. I think postal votes have their place - but there should be good reasons for applying for one.

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 15:12

Time for some vacuuming. This place is infested with spiders.

Mother I still have a furniture issue with a lack of it. We are planning another IKEA trip this weekend. FML.

And now Boris Johnson is about to become PM.

I am quite besotted and batty over cats. Currently have none living but that will be remedied once renovations are over.

I've a postal vote as I'm disabled and can't get to the polling station, which ironically is at the end of the street but the street ends with a bloody great hill at a road junction so I can't even walk there and I don't drive.

Boden? I think their catalogues have come through our letter box but I'm not a fan.

We are PM-less as I post.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/07/2019 15:16

I wonder what TM's conversation with HM was, bearing in mind she 'recommends' her successor. And I really can't see her wanting to actually recommend him as PM!

I'd love to be a fly on the wall at the palace today!

TemporaryPermanent · 24/07/2019 15:22

TM is tribal. Interesting article I read about her feminist credentials which showed endless care and concern for female Conservatives. Only. I can also believe she would do stuff for constituents.

Faced with the prospect of undermining the choice of the Conservative Party - I could never see her doing that.

Butterymuffin · 24/07/2019 15:28

The BBC commented that Johnson was going alone to the palace: "he hasn't got his, uh, partner with him..." Imagine the Queen making any comment on Johnson's personal life..

LouiseCollins28 · 24/07/2019 15:30

Good spot re the Boris Advert BaggyPants. You've misread it though, its not "Join Us" it is in fact Boris's finely crafted post Brexit plan "Join U.S"

His staff look really shambolic and casual clothing? Watching on sky news.

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 15:34

Johnson is PM.

He didn't bow as low as May

NoWordForFluffy · 24/07/2019 15:35

I saw this on Facebook earlier. Creepy as fuck!

His staff look really shambolic and casual clothing?

Expect a lot of informality.

It's PR.

It's about connecting to the people.

OP posts:
The80sweregreat · 24/07/2019 15:36

To be fair , his staff are probably melting as we all are!

Whisky2014 · 24/07/2019 15:37

They aren't connecting with me. I can't imagine going to work dressed so shit.

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 15:38

He doesn't look very humble.
