Westminstenders: Prime Minister Johnson

It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

If there is a no-deal Brexit, Whitehall plans that imports will be prioritised in this order:

  1. Essential meds
  2. Medical devices
  3. Fresh food
  4. Nuclear power plant parts
  5. Chemicals to purify drinking water.

I love cats but dh is allergic, I used to shop at Boden occasionally for the dc, I've never used a postal vote but did proxy my dd vote for the referendum vote while she was at university.

It's lovely to see all the ploppers and bots coming out today and posting on this thread.

I'm sure a lot of Europeans don't want to be part of the EU : it's not universally liked because things never are. It would be ridiculous to think otherwise.

However, I guess that a lot don't want a referendum after seeing just how hard it is to leave and secure other trade deals.
It would be interesting to see how a vote in France or Denmark would go but I can't see them doing this any time soon! Or maybe they are waiting to see how it goes with us as we haven't 'left' anything yet.

horseshit · 24/07/2019 13:57

Delurking to PMK, with a feeling of absolute dread.

For the record -
I love cats despite being allergic, as an EU citizen in the UK I’m grateful for my postal vote though agree that more scrutiny is needed, and Boden is the German word for floor.

BestIsWest · 24/07/2019 13:58

I used to shop at Boden and tbf their clothes are pretty good but I won’t support hunting so I don’t anymore.

PostNotInHaste · 24/07/2019 14:00

Well I only made it as far as Germany but everyone I met who talked about it (which was everyone pretty much) thinks we are insane. Thank goodness I wasn’t there this week with the news that BJ is PM though it was pretty obvious he would be.

I have been touring Europe, and unlike three years ago everyone we have met are applauding Brexit. Unlike before the rest of Europe are also waking up.

Lol. Really? Where in Europe? Which languages do you speak?

Several of us on here, including me, live in Europe (continental) and speak several languages. I can report, from my post on the European frontline, that:

  • most people in Europe don't care about Brexit one way or the other
  • almost everyone thinks the Brits are completely fucking bonkers
prettybird · 24/07/2019 14:05

Those (continental) Europeans since we are European too Wink I have talked with, like the adults accompanying a touring French youth rugby team (from the South of France) are gobsmacked at the UK's stupidity and pigheadedness. They don't understand why the voters here voted in protest at things that weren't even the EU's responsibility yet have far reaching consequences that will be even worse than the very things that they were protesting about Confused They acknowledged that the French two tiered voting system allows them to make protest votes in the 1st round and then put their sensible hats on in the 2nd round.

It does help of course that I was able to speak in French with them Grin

Have had similar conversations with Dutch friends and Danish relatives although in English Wink

horseshit · 24/07/2019 14:06

Apart from expressing their disdain at the entire situation, my EU friends and family usually ask “Why the fuck are you still there?”. Not going to lie, it has crossed my mind much more frequently in the past months.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 24/07/2019 14:10

I love cats and somewhat apparently controversially also dogs don't ask what sort of conversations have lead me to thinking that's controversial. I've never shopped in Boden. I have been advised to get a postal vote as I sometimes tell during votes, but I like to take my dc with me so they see voting as a good and normal thing.

I was in Europe last month and any brexit chat was normally asking wth was going on with the UK, as if brexit wasn't crazy enough were likely to get Johnson as pm. Someone said it was at least good in its shut up a few pro leavers in their country.

Mistigri · 24/07/2019 14:17

It would be interesting to see how a vote in France or Denmark would go

In post-Brexit France, even Le Pen's party is no longer pro-Frexit. The only Frexit party gets about 1% in the polls.

I think what leavers/the Brexit party and the Tories haven't yet understood is that Brexit has been a very effective vaccination programme in the EU27.

TokyoSushi · 24/07/2019 14:21

David Lidington has resigned.

Hazardtired · 24/07/2019 14:24

Ta red

Where's Leclerc????

I'm not a fan of cats. I like turning up in person to vote as going to a polling station is a manageable trip out for DP so we really like it! Have some slight concerns over polling stations asking for ID in the future.
Photocard ID is actually a luxury for some people and I wouldn't want anyone to be turned away. I think showing a utility bill/benefits letter should suffice if it is introduced. As for postal votes I think they're great for people who can't leave the house but I'm a bit Hmm over it for anyone who doesn't have a valid need. Never shopped in Boden or joules I get the two confused and have the impression they for petite people.

Plus ça change ...

TheABC · 24/07/2019 14:27

I am in a nihilist mood. I am sure Johnson will not disappoint with his choice of crap cabinet appointments and I look forward to watching him squirm in the Brexit straightjacket. I also look forward to see him hold the record for the shortest amount of time in office.

I think we have a 1 in 4 chance of crashing out. The odds are much higher for Tory electoral oblivion.

Can anyone explain why parliament is breaking until September? Surely in the current circumstances, a couple of weeks is more than sufficient.

RedToothBrush · 24/07/2019 14:30

I think the stop Brexit man just saved her from crying by breaking the moment!!!

Cos MPs and civil servants all have nice holidays to go on.

Just met a Tory MP who publicly supported Boris Johnson

Boris Johnson will pledge to be, err "servant of the people" in his speech outside No 10 later. Straight from the Tony Blair playbook. But is far more divisive going into office.

Boris Johnson to vow to 'change Britain for the better' in first speech as Prime Minister

A populist who says nothing but claims to be on your side... Whilst promising the earth...

When I was in Greece at the time of their referendum on the bailout in 2015, when the Greeks had limited access to their own bank accounts as the financial situation was so dire (and even we as tourists weren't able to get money out even though some of the tavernas had stopped accepting cards Shock), we had lots of discussions with Greeks (taxi drivers, bicycle hire lady, the hotel owner we'd been going there for 12 years , taverna owners, other Greeks on holiday (hotel was popular with Greeks), the wee old men who spent the days chewing the fat in the hotel dining room (and who asked ds if he would mind if they changed the TV from the Tour de France to watch some politics the result of the referendum iirc , the wee guy who ran the tiny local supermarket (with my basic Greek) ......

While there was some resentment towards the Germans and Merkel (we were in the Ionian Islands which had a particularly torid experience with the Germans in WW2 Sad), there was none towards the EU.

They acknowledged that their difficulties were due in a large part of their own making; that they shouldn't have joined the Euro as they'd "cooked the books". There were mixed views as to whether they should stay in the Eurozone or should go back to the drachma.

But I repeat, not one of them wanted to leave the EU.

NoBaggyPants · 24/07/2019 14:45

Anyone else getting ads saying "join us" with a pic of Johnson?

Assume the Conservative Party is now advertising on MN, although I didn't click to see where it went.
