Westminstenders: Prime Minister Johnson

It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

Because of the free trade, industry and ease of business.
I don't understand why you are so isolationist - I think possibly because you don't truly understand the importance of international trade (and before you mention the USA and really show ignorance- they SCREW everyone smaller than them). Growing up in Nz the media always was talking about hard won FTA's - we knew how important they were for the wealth of the country( which relatively is poor compared with the Uk - but for how long?). They haven't been talked about here(significantly) for decades - so everyone has taken them for granted. Liam Fox has found out the hard way how hard they are.....

The power of positive thought will not sort business in the short and medium term - this is decades to rebuild the economy.

Plus my friends can't feed there kids on positive thought.....

mrslaughan · 25/07/2019 16:05

@DGRossetti - completely agree - don't listen to his words, watch his actions . Talking about unity and then his cabinet is essentially completely ERG - I can't believe people fall for it

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2019 16:05

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

No10 confirms that Boris Johnson's 33-strong Cabinet is the biggest since Gordon Brown's in 2008.
That doyenne of small government.
.....
Alain Tolhurst@Alain_Tolhurst

Boris has got so many ministers "attending Cabinet" that they've had to add a kids table at the end to fit them all in
....

Tom Newton Dunn@tnewtondunn

No10 has just published Boris Johnson’s full Cabinet - and it’s a big one, 33 in total.
Old mates Jake Berry and Kwazi Kwarteng squeezed in, along with a place for the Security Minister for the first time, now Brandon Lewis.

A kiddie table!!😀

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2019 16:08

For those who cannot read:

As has been posted multiple times, a VoNC in the first 4 days after MPs return, would give a GE BEFORE Brexit Day

If Labour or LDems can form a govt, then they would ask the EU for an extension, to give time to sort out this Brexshit mess the Tories have caused

DGRossetti · 25/07/2019 16:09

completely agree - don't listen to his words, watch his actions . Talking about unity and then his cabinet is essentially completely ERG - I can't believe people fall for it

Because to accept the reality goes against what a lot of people hold dear - it's better to have hope in a lie, than believe the truth sometimes.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 25/07/2019 16:09

A little belief is good, wouldn’t it be better if we all start to believe in our country

hester I actually tried this for 24 hours. A little experiment to see if I could magic Brexit into something positive. I spent 24 hours “believing” in Brexit. I could taste the extra sovereignty, I could feel all those laws the EU forced us to have flowing away (this was hard as I couldn’t actually think of any).

At the end of the 24 hours I had a look and guess what? Brexit remains a stupid idea. Turns out “believing” in something doesn’t make it real - Who knew?

Hester54 · 25/07/2019 16:11

mrslaughan I sure BJ wants free trade deals, you make it sound if we are being held hostage or being bullied by the EU.
So you love the EU an organisation more than you love this country? Or are you scared of it because it will take its toys away ( like bullies do )

prettybird · 25/07/2019 16:12

DGR - I have proper original Victorian sash window and lovely high ceilings. The house even has early "air conditioning" - vents between the rooms to help the airflow. The house is lovely and cool inside Smile

The80sweregreat · 25/07/2019 16:12

Maybe we all need to 'throw it up to the universe' / worth a go if positive thinking isn't working that well.

Hester54 · 25/07/2019 16:12

ThereWillBeAdequateFood Believe in your country

Hester54 · 25/07/2019 16:14

ThereWillBeAdequateFood How can you tell it’s a stupid idea, it hasn’t happened yet, so at this moment we don’t now how it will turn out,

tobee · 25/07/2019 16:16

The kiddie table! GrinYou know when people get annoyed on Mumsnet by posters saying that a comment made them spit out their coffee....?

Sorry.

prettybird · 25/07/2019 16:16

I love my country. I also love the EU. The two are not mutually incompatible Confused

prettybird · 25/07/2019 16:17

....I should add, flaws and all for both Wink

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2019 16:18

Was BJ claiming only 1 chance in a million of No Deal,
or was that just an old (>1 day) BJ lie ?

Matt Dathan@matt_dathan

Boris to his new Cabinet:

"We are now committed, all of us, to leaving the European Union on October 31 OR EARLIER"

Alex Barker@alexebarker

Here’s the @MichelBarnier email to EU member states calling Boris’ statement “rather combative” and basically unnegotiable

Cher is so wise....

It's so sad that you're leaving
It takes time to believe it
But after all is said and done
You're gonna be the lonely one, oh

mrslaughan · 25/07/2019 16:23

I don't believe we are being bullied by the EU - I just believe if you think that they will bow down to the uk at the expense of member nations (still no answers on the Irish border) - they won't.
I don't turn up to golf club expecting to play, with all the perks of being a member, WITHOUT actually being a member - anywhere in the world that would be rude, stupid and ignorant

Omg! New thread already!

Not surprising I suppose Grin

pollyannaperspective · 25/07/2019 16:25

So, our positive friend Hesta54
it is OK to believe in our country and therefore that it is going to be great and that Brexit is not a stupid idea, because Brexit hasn't happened yet so we don't know it is a stupid idea,
but
it is not OK to believe in our country and that, based on a different weighing of the likely outcomes from Brexit, it is not gong to be great when Brexit happens.
Why is one person's belief more right/powerful than another's?

dreichhighlands · 25/07/2019 16:26

I don't think I love my country or the EU to be honest. I think there are positives to my country and also the EU and we are better being part of it.
I don't think that we will combust outside of the EU but I do think it will be damaging.
It seems a damaging vanity project to leave.
Living abroad makes you realize how small the UK actually is on the world stage.
I can't think of any country that has benefited from being run by the hard right so I don't imagine the UK will be any different.
Time will tell.

www.theweek.co.uk/fact-check/95547/fact-check-what-a-no-deal-brexit-really-means

I really can’t be arsed hester sorry the heat is getting to me. I’ve looked at no deal (and that is where this is leading) and it looks terrifying from all angles.

I’m just sick of being told to “believe” in my country / Brexit / whatever. Seriously what bloody difference is my “believing” going to achieve?

The EU aren’t going to look over the channel. Realise 90% of the U.K. population “believe” in Brexit and suddenly offer us all the benefits of being in the EU whilst also leaving the EU.
Fed up of being told magical thinking will help. Why do you care if a load of remainers “believe”?

DGRossetti · 25/07/2019 16:31

Debating differing opinions is great but when a PP comes out with the EU costs us 10s of 100s of billion ie many times more than our entire GDP and then when asked to justify just ignores, i switch off.

Its Trumpism: come out with rubbish and then deny or ignore.
