Westminstenders: Prime Minister Johnson

It is actually happening.

By 5pm tomorrow Johnson should be Prime Minister, if nothing major goes wrong for him.

Phillip Hammond is expected to resign early in the morning. And there maybe others.

Parliament goes into recess on Thursday. Giving Johnson only enough time to announce a Cabinet and maybe give a brief statement in Parliament.

As it stands Johnson will have an effective majority of 1 if the Brecon by-election goes the way expected next week.

Unless someone else defects. Which isn't beyond the realms of possibility.

We also have Charlie Elphicke now suspended and facing a court appearance on 6th September, just 3 days after Parliament returns after the summer recess.

Remember when parliament returns Johnson must get a Queen's Speech vote to pass to start the new session.

The return of Parliament is 8 weeks before 31st October.

If Johnson can't pass a Queen's Speech... Is there time for a GE before 31st October? By the skin of our teeth? Or a crucial recall petition?

So for all the talk that parliament can we prevented from being prorogued or that we can get a deal by the 31st October, there is a GE shaped problem.

As for Johnson's plan for Brexit. Don't expect to see him say anything but waffly bollocks before that key Queens Speech vote. He can't. Instead expect lots of domestic promises - in part to distract, in part in prep for a possible snap election.

Of course to have an extension the Prime Minister needs to ask for it. Would a GE be enough to get one? And would we be granted one?

On the flip to that is the prospect of May's Deal. Much has been made of its death. But some have said its premature to say that. At the eleventh hour should the situation arise would parliament vote for it, backstop and all, to prevent no deal? Its not beyond the realms of possibility.

All the talk of Johnson driving a change of direction by the force of personality is nonsense. Johnson can use his personality domestically for support, but he his personality offers nothing to the EU.

On top of this all we have the Iran Oil Tanker Crisis. The US were alleged to have set us up, and now told us to look after our own tankers. Leaving us to look to Europe for international security cooperation in the area... Irony isn't lost.

Let us see what tomorrow might bring though...

I've never based major financial decisions on belief in country, god, or whatever

I always have a plan, which doesn't involve unicorns

Alsohuman · 25/07/2019 16:44

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jul/25/boris-johnson-vows-to-completely-ditch-brexit-backstop

Apparently all be well by 2050. Great, something to look forward to when I’m 97. He really is a tosser.

JoannaCuppa · 25/07/2019 16:47

@Youreallrightimsorattled

@LonelyTiredandLow ‘tis has decided to step back to help with his blood pressure is the official stance. But I’m guessing he got banned and has returned as ‘a lurker of three years’ called joannacuppa

Hmm a)I am not Clerc as he is a bloke and I am most definitely not
B) Clerc wasn't banned
C) It wasn't me who said they were a lurker of three years. Do at least TRY to be accurate if you want to cast aspersions on people.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/07/2019 16:48

Uk contributions are £8-9 billion net, which is not a big deal to a Uk GDP of about £2 trillion (2,000 billion)

and certainly not much of "weapon" against an EU GDP of about £13 billion

SistemaAddict · 25/07/2019 16:50

Bloody hell there's some grumpy posters about today!

Hazardtired · 25/07/2019 16:51

Hang on so the benefits of brexit will be felt in 2050 the same year scientist predict the real hard-core impact of climate change will be felt?

2050 will be quite an interesting year then.

Songsofexperience · 25/07/2019 16:53

Well @hazard that's if we haven't drowned til then.

Alsohuman · 25/07/2019 16:55

I expect I’ll be dead anyway.

probstimeforanewname · 25/07/2019 16:55

Talking about unity and then his cabinet is essentially completely ERG

It isn't. The big names are, but there are some moderates in there. Nicky Morgan and Amber Rudd getting a lot of stick for "selling out" but would people really prefer a 100% ERG cabinet?

Most entertainment I have had all week (I do need to get out more but it is too hot). same old nonsense from 3 years ago, no answers to questions posed - just gotta believe. I am trying this theory of belief with the lottery (that I don't have any tickets for). Here's hoping. And anyone who thinks DGR is racist is 'misguided' Grin

MotherOfSoupDragons · 25/07/2019 17:22

Come on everyone, pour your gin/wine/iced water, turn on your phone torches, wave your hands side to side above your heads and sing. Song so loud you can't hear yourself crying inside

SwedishEdith · 25/07/2019 17:23

A lot of that article could also apply to North and his dad. Takes one to know one.

Yes, agree mistigri - was thinking that as Richard North retweeted it.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 25/07/2019 17:23

Sing, obvs.

CrunchyCarrot · 25/07/2019 17:41

What made me fume today listening to Johnson in the HoC today, was how he kept telling people who were raising valid concerns that they were being negative and just dismissed what they said. It's a Trump tactic. Disgusting. Hilary Benn raised some good questions concerning a possible No Deal but BJ simply said he was being negative and brushed aside his comments without answering the question. Benn's face said it all, you could see he was simmering with anger. Angry

Fiderer · 25/07/2019 17:47

And one MP whose question was about NRP not paying maintenance and Johnson's response was a quick-fire (paraphrased) "We're working with govt's around the world" as he obv assumed non-resident parent meant not in the UK.

prettybird · 25/07/2019 17:53

...because of course, issues with "non-resident parents" couldn't possibly apply to BJ Wink

Carpediem1 · 25/07/2019 17:56

DGRosetti catching up with thread...our 100 -200 yr old sash windows are working well thank you having replaced some sash cords (a small job as it turns out). Nice through draught thankfully as no g & t left...

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 25/07/2019 19:26

Well, this is a late pmk - thank you Red

Mr Babooshka is another one suffering in the heat. He can’t cope at all - seems to have no internal thermostat and all his Parkinson’s symptoms become even more extreme. Currently can’t even raise a glass of water to his lips. The weather has just broken here - hope Bellini, Mrs DGR and Mr Hazard are finally getting some relief from the heat too.

Just heard Johnson refer to the ‘overwhelming majority’ who voted for Brexit. Overwhelming? Confused

The80sweregreat · 25/07/2019 19:36

Johnson even lies about stats like the Brexit vote that you can google in seconds!
Why doesn't he know these things?
It was not overwhelming only in his head!

borntobequiet · 25/07/2019 19:38

Out all day and returned to a full thread featuring the same old regurgitated nonsense from three years ago . Weather has broken here on the French Atlantic coast - still warm but breezy and fresh, so might sleep tonight. Flowers for everyone coping with body temp regulation, either their own or that of someone they care for. My DM suffered badly in her later years, it’s awful.

Hazardtired · 25/07/2019 20:56

singing tough day for you both Flowers I would send hugs but the extra body heat won't help!

I never realised pre DP getting sick how things like temp regulation problems effect people with all kinds of conditions. Then how much time and thought have to go in to trying to externally regulate. Should make it a question on the esa/pip forms.

ListeningQuietly · 25/07/2019 20:58

Hazard
THose who never have to deal with long term illness and disability can be frightening in their lack of knowledge

ListeningQuietly · 25/07/2019 20:58

Even more so when they are arrogant rich politicians
