Talk of its demise are premature.

It was poking gentle fun, not offensive to anyone except the professionally offended, imo

BigChocFrenzy · 03/07/2019 14:08

(Dmitri is a trade expert with a gift for explaining international trade to non-professionals)

Dmitry Grozoubinskii@DmitryOpines* 😂😂

From Canada's POV:

"So, you have far fewer consumers?"

"Yes."

"And you've already given away most of the tariff cuts we'd be getting?"

"Yes."

"But you want the exact same deal the EU got?"

"Yes."

"There's no Canadian word for 'no' but we'll import one and send it to you."

tobee · 03/07/2019 14:17

What's that word for posters that come on a thread and stir it up and then disappear again?

Think I might have some shepherds pie tonight. Or Barnsley chops. Or Lancashire hotpot. Or maybe go really pro European and have some kleftiko.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/07/2019 14:18

"Ploppers" ?

BigChocFrenzy · 03/07/2019 14:20

I'm taking a deep breath after reading this on the AIBU TV Licence thread:

"I don't think any pro remain person has ever complained that the BBC is too pro Brexit, unless they're an idiot."

I won't post a reply, because it's my birthday today and I want to keep the contented mood after my delic Flammkuchen lunch

Moanranger · 03/07/2019 14:22

Just readin BJ’s proposals to do with “nanny state” taxes, e.g. sugar. His policies read like pandering to the worst of The Spectator readers ( tho Tanya Gold finds him deplorable in a recent New York Times editorial.)
I suppose if we crash out of E.U. we could bring back smoking in restaurants, offices & all public places - what a pleasure not to have a “nanny state”. Also take off all those pesky warnings on booze & fag packs - really important stuff, this, more important than trade, surely ( I am being ironic!)

Morons ?

LonelyTiredandLow · 03/07/2019 14:31

Farage being shunned by the Tories reminds me somewhat of Hitler being turned down to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Both (5ft6) small and bitter men. Hitler went on to steal artwork from across Europe, while Farage at the moment seems content with wrecking the Tory party and alienating us from EU. It's a hard one to unpick with him - was he so annoyed at the EU regulations he hated EU to begin or was it a way to get attention from the Tories ("look at me being a good boy telling off these regulators and helping us stay rich! Let me in little piggies!") or was it a long term plan to completely trash the party whilst getting the notoriety of bringing the country that refused to elect him as an MP to it's knees? Maybe all of the above and happy coincidence Hmm

DGRossetti · 03/07/2019 14:32

He has fuck all intention of changing anything. He could be the first fully woke politician who has twigged you can promise whatever you like to get into power and then forget it when you're there. I'm surprised more posters here haven't already worked out what agencies he would blame for failing to be able to deliver his promise. Obvious the EU - that's a given. But there will be the nasty WHO, the totally unreasonable UN, and the frankly made up FU.

LonelyTiredandLow · 03/07/2019 14:34

Moanranger that's the other bit I can't figure out (other than in my previous post about the sin tax from this am) as Tories love authoritarian health nudges - tax is a benefit and they get to push people to do what is "right". I know the poorest suffer most with tax/price raising, but as a pledge it somehow doesn't hit the "death penalty" sweet spot of Tory voters but may be an attempt to conflate regulation with tax and skim some BXP support from those lower down the food chain ('scuse pun when talking about food!)

Happy Birthday BCF.

DGRossetti · 03/07/2019 14:49

Tories love authoritarian health nudges

In which case they're not Tories, they are socialists Grin

You can't have a small state and then run around nannying everyone.

I think the confusion here is starting by thinking there is any motherly concern for the nation which was behind the "sin taxes". There isn't. As we all know, a real Tory doesn't give a shit about the publics health or safety unless there's a quick buck in it.

The sin taxes - like the bedroom tax - are simply another way of making sure the poorest damn well know their place.

yolofish · 03/07/2019 14:50

anyone else just feel like Nero is fiddling while Rome burns?

happy birthday BCF. flammkuchen, yum!

DGRossetti · 03/07/2019 14:55

anyone else just feel like Nero is fiddling while Rome burns?

I'm sure Boris would approve of the analogy Grin. Especially as the burning of Rome swept away a lot of old dangerous crowded structures and paved the way for a massive rebuilding programme (cf the Great Fire of London ...)

tobee · 03/07/2019 14:57

Ooh! I just googled Flammkuchen. That looks gorgeous.

BigChocFrenzy · 03/07/2019 14:59

Thanks folk, I had:

A Mediteranean Flammkuchen (tarte flambé) wih feta, onion, cherry tomato, craime fraiche etc and salad with olive oil
followed by an apple, calvados & almond Flammkuchen

< sits burping happily >

If anyone plans to visit Germany - or the French Alsace region - ask if they serve Flammkuchen

imo, a brilliant example of Franco-German invention & cooperation Grin

DGRossetti · 03/07/2019 15:00

@BCF Buon compleanno Smile Wine
