That is disgraceful. But sadly no surprise.

yolofish · 02/07/2019 11:30

Shameful, disgusting behaviour. I dont think any of us would have thought they would sink this low.

bellinisurge · 02/07/2019 11:31

In the US, the right has been very negative about US football players "taking the knee" - that is going down on one knee when the US national anthem is played (as it is at all sporting events) in protest at the treatment of black Americans by law enforcement.
Imagine what they would say if they turned their backs.
Yes, I accept that the national anthem is not the same as the European Parliament anthem. But it is still rude and disrespectful of people to spit on the gravy train after they have suckled from it.

Peregrina · 02/07/2019 11:53

It's worth juxtaposing those two pictures. Yes Brexit Party supporters I hope you are proud of yourselves in choosing your role models. Especially when you talk about patriotism and fighting the Germans in WW2.

Always a bad idea to insult an anthem or flag
even when it comes to regimes like those in China, Russia, Saudi

  • the ordinary people in those countries feel as insulted as the leaders and it can make things tougher for the UK
TheElementsSong · 02/07/2019 12:02

Especially when you talk about patriotism

Well said Peregrina - not to mention those who say they voted Leave, and then voted for BXP, for “peace” and “anti-racism”.

Johnson and Hunt accused of trying to turn UK into tax haven

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jul/02/boris-johnson-jeremy-hunt-accused-of-trying-to-turn-uk-into-tax-haven-freeports

Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt have been accused of trying to turn the UK into a haven for tax evaders and money launderers after the Tory leadership rivalss^ each backed the creation of “freeports” on the east coast.
.....
These zones, known as freeports, are typically used to store high-value items such as valuable artworks, precious stones or antiques.

They were heavily criticised by a European parliament report last year for facilitating “illegal activity” such as tax evasion and money-laundering.

Shameful behaviour.

BigChocFrenzy · 02/07/2019 12:30

Showing the world how ill-mannered and childish some elected British representatives are

BigChocFrenzy · 02/07/2019 12:42

They obviously don't care that the EP has to vote on any deal before or after Brexit
and can also influence the post-Brexit EU negotating team

{Always a bad idea to insult an anthem or flag

While you can argue the merits or otherwise of tradition and respect in other countries I can almost feel nails being banged into the coffins of future trade deals with some countries over this.

Peregrina · 02/07/2019 13:01

There were as many non Faragist/Brexit MEPs elected who didn't let the side down and the other countries MEPs will have noticed this.

1tisILeClerc · 02/07/2019 13:06

I'm looking forward to seeing the comments from the European press.

TokyoSushi · 02/07/2019 13:08

PMK, absolutely disgraceful behaviour today.

Grinchly · 02/07/2019 13:15

PMK. Disgusting, disrespectful and disgraceful behaviour. There are no depths to which these people won't stoop, are there?

I feel so ashamed and embarrassed. What must our European friends be thinking.

GeistohneGrenzen · 02/07/2019 13:21

I didn't cry like lonelyplanetmum but I felt more anger and sweary than I ever thought possible. It was definitely a witnessing the money lenders in the temple moment.

Windinthewillows05 · 02/07/2019 13:25

This does not give a good impression either. Sad that it has come to this. www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1147882/Brexit-news-EU-Liberal-Democrats-European-Union-Parliament-Lib-Dems-Brexit-Party-video

SinisterBumFacedCat · 02/07/2019 13:27

I’m utterly embarrassed and ashamed that people are representing our country.

FFS if you ever find yourself turning your back when the Ode to Joy is playing surely you must see how utterly wrong you are.

Peregrina · 02/07/2019 13:30

In a way this is a better photo because it shows that the Brexit party bolloxed things up and ended up sitting at the back. It's a more effective protest if you are at the front.

And a photo to show that we are not all of the Farage Fascist party.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 02/07/2019 13:31

Shame the Express didn’t highlight more of the Brexit Party’s parallels with the Nazis, they are more offended by a swear word.

Peregrina · 02/07/2019 13:33

I am not 'sad that it's come to this' I am delighted that there are people willing to stand up for those who don't want to see their country trashed. I am happy to put up pictures of MEPs from a party which has always supported Europe and whose MEPs will take their seats and work to do the job they were elected for.

Unlike Farage's mob. I look forward to them turning their backs on their salaries and pensions.

thethethethethe · 02/07/2019 13:37

A lot of the other UK people are sitting down instead of standing up. Are they the Tories? Not impressed by that either.
