I think BXP are going to be around for a long time yet, especially if they see the Tory party on their knees and a public baying for a "better" Brexit - remember whoever smelt it dealt it - BXP haven't had their mits on it yet so their Brexit would have been whiter than white!

I see a coalition between them or the rise of them to take far right stage. The rest will do similar to the EU elections; split votes for the centrists.

QueenMabby · 20/06/2019 14:56

RTB and SonEt I think I’m the one with the embarrassing husband when it comes to the Brexit side of things (fortunately this is only a tiny part of an otherwise lovely human!). He genuinely doesn’t think we will ever leave so it’s not something he has to think about 🙄

DGRossetti · 20/06/2019 14:56

Wasn't there a story about MPs being asked by team BoJo to snap their ballot papers to prove they'd actually backed him ?

(Not sure how that would deal with any MP smart enough to take a snap and then spoil the ballot paper or ask for another one for a real vote ...)

Weren't there stories from the US about some employers requiring employees to vote one way or the other and having to prove it ?

Always an idea to keep an eye on stories like that - they tend to appear in the UK soon after.

Even YouGov have given up any pretence of independence and have started spelling "theatre" theater - so we know who's paying them these days.

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2019 15:00

DH is hard remain.

But if we can't remain, he's decided he's now hard no deal Brexit.

bangs head on the wall

I'm kinda glad he's not an MP!!!

Your DH may be channelling Mencken:

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard"

BigChocFrenzy · 20/06/2019 15:05

I definitely thought of Mencken when I heards Trump had been elected:

"On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

He hadn't much faith in people, or in things somehow turning out ok in the end

Matt Dathan @matt_dathan
One of the 1922 exec members confirms that neither of the two spoilt ballots had a penis drawn on them

John Crace @JohnJCrace
Spoilt ballots made the biggest percentage gains. There's still hope

Brian Johnson @Saggydaddy
Reliably informed that the spoilt ballots were both from Chris Grayling who voted twice for Jo Swinson. #PoliticsLive #ToryLeadershipContest

More seriously, noting that any new PM can not afford to lose a single vote:

James Forsyth @JGForsyth
If I was a Tory whip, I would be very worried about those 2 spoilt ballot papers. Means 2 Tory MPs can't stomach the idea of any of these candidates as PM which is another sign that there's trouble ahead

Whatever happened to the pretence that Tory party is a broad church ?

Or are we moving towards a Chinese Democracy ?

Ellie56 · 20/06/2019 15:19

Two spoilt ballot papers...

Rory Stewart -Get real and start telling the truth

Theresa May - Bollocks to the lot of you

Matt Dathan @matt_dathan
Earlier today Rory Stewart's wife said she'd been role-playing Dominic Raab in his debate prep.

She'll be disappointed her work was for nothing

Wow! I think being prepared to do this is known as LOVE.

I do hope she did the Turnip Roidstare as part of her impression.

Ah, the great Mencken ... well worth a read for some nice sound pithy Twainesque soundbites.

en.wikiquote.org/wiki/H._L._Mencken

It was seeing the Mencken quote on the wall in the final part of "The Wire" that sealed it's place as a classic TV series Grin

Omar comin' !

DGRossetti · 20/06/2019 15:28

Incidentally, anyone thinking/hoping that economic sense will eventually prevail over Brexit should already be aware of the US pathfinder experiment ..

www.theregister.co.uk/2019/06/20/trump_tariff_response/

as it seems the US - in the great shape of it's great president - is also having a similar ideology vs. economy moment.

tobee · 20/06/2019 15:35

Yes apparently Boris's camp tried to get MPs to photograph their ballot papers in the first round as proof of their support. This led to MPs being banned from taking their phones into the voting room. Although not sure if this came in to force before the voting started or when someone was discovered doing it. Boris is such a cunt.

1tisILeClerc · 20/06/2019 15:37

{One of the 1922 exec members confirms that neither of the two spoilt ballots had a penis drawn on them}

The fact that this was thought about and mentioned as a possibility is a terrible indication of the state of the UK, far more worrying than it may seem when you consider the persons who might get elected would have the authority to take the UK into war, either conventional or nuclear with any adversary in the world.

DGRossetti · 20/06/2019 15:45

Only with US permission.

tobee · 20/06/2019 15:47

I thought that 1922 non penis confirmation was someone's idea of a joke? Surely?

  • DH is hard remain.

If I was taking a purely selfish point of view this would be me. Singapore-on-Thames would be great for me personally.

...but obviously it fucks over a lot of other people.
May be I'll go to the Leadership Hustings and be 'turned' and channel my inner Loathsome

1tisILeClerc · 20/06/2019 15:58

{Only with US permission.}

With the likelihood of 'getting into bed' with Trump, is that supposed to be reassuring?
There was supposedly a '4 minute warning', has that been updated and do we have to say our last goodbyes quicker now?

RedToothBrush · 20/06/2019 16:06

BCF, DH is a 'complex, yet simple soul' at times. Thats probably not wildly off the mark.

I DREAD going to the polling booth with him.... I have multiple stories...

He loves politics. Yet hates politicians and politics.

He is most definitely of the 'spoil ballot, let just climb out of window as if thats perfectly normal' mentality of Stewart in more ways than I can repeat here (and has been gushing about him to an utterly embarassing level for the last couple of weeks).

He has something of an anarchistic streak but is also the most responsible, intelligent and capable people you'll meet at the same time.

So I think it more of a 'we need to do the most sensible thing' then followed by a 'fuck it, lets just go utterly crazy and go down in flames' attitude.

Whereas, I'm just plain risk adverse.

Despite repeated assurances (make of them what you will Hmm) that the UKs nuclear deterrent is "independent" I refuse to believe it is (and how could it be proved anyway). For a start, it would be fucking insane of the US to provide us with weapons capable of being used against it. And in the secret part of the various treaties going back to Eisenhower and Kennedy, you can bet your bottom dollar there are mechanism for the US to prevent the UK using Trident if it were to risk US interests.

It's one of the reasons why Trident is such a waste of money. If Corbyn wants a facesaving way to dump Trident he'd be a lot better off just saying there's no point in it as it's ultimately US controlled.

bellinisurge · 20/06/2019 16:33

My DH is also becoming more "fuck 'em, I hope they starve". It is quite a lot of work if I can be arsed to keep plugging the idea of compromise.

Iambuffy · 20/06/2019 16:43

My dh still doesn't think Brexit will happen.

Ellie56 · 20/06/2019 16:55

Why does he think this @Iambuffy ?

I'd love to think he's right!

JoannaCuppa · 20/06/2019 17:05

Should Boris and 'pulling things off' be in the same sentence?

Grin
Iambuffy · 20/06/2019 17:07

No idea.
He keeps saying "they wouldn't do anything that stupid".
Who are "they"?
