We are full steam ahead with European Parliamentary Elections! Something that seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

May still remains adament that they will not happen, but the die has been cast.

May is off to beg Macron and Merkel to back an extension but the French are already stating they want assurances we won't screw thing up for everyone else.

May still is pushing for a deal with Corbyn and a Not a compromise.

Still there is no sign of a breakthrough either for an extension nor over a cross party deal. It drags on, but at least no one has mentioned the WA for ten minutes.

We might yet be in Europe for another Eurovision. Psychologically this feels important.

The ERG are not happy.

If EU citizens are not on the electoral register yet (I think they still are in Scotland, so we're ok for the EU elections), then technically there should be time for them to get themselves put on before the elections. But I think it's 3 weeks before (am not sure) so it's cutting it fine! Shock

But somehow I think that the Government won't be doing a public information campaign to that effect! Hmm

tobee · 09/04/2019 19:11

I'm not sure that there is a Mrs Francois these days Elenade. Yes I googled because I was curious as to who would possibly marry him

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 19:11

So it was a Brexiteer in a bidding war against the UK govt - must cost a lot of money to do that Hmm
Crowd-funded, or from somewhere else ?

(That was in December, btw, so I don't know if that money contest is still going on)

The British state and a pro-Brexit campaigner called Tim are locked in an online bidding war to determine what you see when you Google the phrase “what is the Brexit deal?”

NoWordForFluffy · 09/04/2019 19:13

I'm not sure that there is a Mrs Francois these days

I can't possibly think why he could have a failed marriage at all!

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/04/2019 19:13

A lot of our current MEPs are far right (further right than Hungarys) but they are creeping towards central.

It's the thought of PM Boris trying to wreck things that is of most concern,
not so much the MEPs, who are likely to include fewer Kippers

However, only a few issues now require unanimity, so Boris would mostly do his usual things of making himself and the UK look arses,
rather than cause the EU really serious problems

Still, the EU may just be fed up of British arses by now

Switsy · 09/04/2019 19:16

I googled Francois' relationship status a few weeks ago. Not to see if I was in with a chance (!) but just out of sheer wonder as to whether someone would choose to be his romantic partner. He was married for a few years in the early noughties but is now divorced. I'm sure his sexual currency will have sky rocketed in the last few weeks Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 19:19

FYI:
EFDD - far right (Farage / UKIP)
ENS - far right (Le Pen)

An extension without giving EU citizens their right to vote (and stand Wink) in the local elections begs the interesting question: would those local elections end up being nul and void? ConfusedShock

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/04/2019 19:23

Has there been another vote today then? What was it about?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 19:25

@pretty, @red Do we know if EP citizens have actually been removed from the register for local and EP elections ?

Of so, I'd expect legal action asap - hello Jo Maugham ?

BambooBoobam · 09/04/2019 19:26

How do you find out who are mep candidates? Do you vote by uk region? I can see there are a number for where I am in the uk. Can you vote for more than one mep?

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/04/2019 19:32

Bamboo
The UK is divided into 12 electoral regions made up of the nations and regions of the UK. Each region has between 3 and 10 MEPs and each MEP in a region represents each person living there.

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/04/2019 19:32

In England, Scotland and Wales the voting system for the European elections is the d'Hondt system of proportional representation - regional closed list. In Northern Ireland the system is Single Transferable Vote.

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/04/2019 19:33

The parties will decide the candidates and they will be announced in due course.

Flowerplower · 09/04/2019 19:34

In contrast to Mark Francois, have a look at this lovely couple- they are clearly so happy. Married since 1978! I'm lucky to have a wonderful DH but must admit to being a tiny bit jealous of Malgorzata Tusk Grin.

Random18 · 09/04/2019 19:35

I would expect EU citizens living in England to be on electoral register as we have local elections soon?

QueenOfThorns · 09/04/2019 19:35

Do we know if EP citizens have actually been removed from the register for local and EP elections?

Well, I can’t say about the EP elections, but my DH has a polling card for the local ones...

Random18 · 09/04/2019 19:35

Although they may not be in all areas?

Switsy · 09/04/2019 19:35

She doesn't look old enough to have been married for 40 years!

Flowerplower · 09/04/2019 19:35

Sigh.

Still think he's a slimy weasel and I trust him about as far as I could throw him

That also describes mine. Unfortunately - and I can assure you I hate myself for this - I find myself slightly fancying him Blush. I used to fancy Alan B'stard too though...

prettybird · 09/04/2019 19:39

On reflection, EU citizens are probably still on the register - of only because if there had been local by-elections before 29 March, they'd have been entitled to vote.

But it would be interesting to check! Grin
