We are full steam ahead with European Parliamentary Elections! Something that seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

May still remains adament that they will not happen, but the die has been cast.

May is off to beg Macron and Merkel to back an extension but the French are already stating they want assurances we won't screw thing up for everyone else.

May still is pushing for a deal with Corbyn and a Not a compromise.

Still there is no sign of a breakthrough either for an extension nor over a cross party deal. It drags on, but at least no one has mentioned the WA for ten minutes.

We might yet be in Europe for another Eurovision. Psychologically this feels important.

The ERG are not happy.

My MP is also on that list. No surprise as he's fanatically pro-leave. Any attempt to communicate with him just brings a response saying he completely disagrees - and that's it. He won't even acknowledge that people are entitled to hold an opposing view.

We're in a constituency where No Deal would be a disaster for many, many less well-off people.

Flowerplower · 09/04/2019 18:07

I haven't spoken to my parents in about a week Blush... but I did ask my mum to email me as soon as she heard and she hasn't yet. I wouldn't hold my breath though NoWordForFluffy, if he had anything interesting to say he'd have said it by now I'm sure!

TheMShip · 09/04/2019 18:08

@havingtochangeusernameagain

Anything about naturalized British citizens? Part of why we did it was for EU FOM.

DivisionBelles · 09/04/2019 18:17

Snap Pilcrow. 60/40 Leave here, but the region has benefited hugely from EU investment. MP refuses to engage with anyone with a remain POV, despite the Revoke Article 50 petition signatures almost matching his reasonable majority. I feel another email is needed, even if it just fills up his inbox a bit more. Is it possible to find out via FOI how many letters/emails an MP has actually received on an issue?

wherearemychickens · 09/04/2019 18:37

Thanks Pesty - looks like if we are going to book our holiday tomorrow, I will be doing it about midnight tomorrow then. I might just say sod it and book anyway.

JadziaSnax · 09/04/2019 18:40

My MP abstained even though he voted for no-deal in the indicative votes. Still think he's a slimy weasel and I trust him about as far as I could throw him.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/04/2019 18:46

Still think he's a slimy weasel and I trust him about as far as I could throw him.

That describes so many MPs!

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 18:49

WIth the risks associated with a long extension,
the EU consensus might even be to give May her 30 June extension ....

that is the "longest short extension" SCHLONG they can offer her, which avoids the Uk being able to disrupt any EU business

"EU Files Adoption Papers For Scotland, Northern Ireland" pretty 😂

I can hear you spinning your prayer wheel !

(It's me, chevvy!)

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 18:51

Returning to a point made upthread ...

If the UK is a member of the EU on May 2nd, then EU nationals will be entitled to vote ?

Is there enough time, resources, and most importantly political will to make this happen ?

What are the penalties for denying a persons right to vote ?

woman19 · 09/04/2019 18:51

@faisalislam

  1. This seems significant - first time I recall a reference to “right to revoke.. at any time”

"Still think he's a slimy weasel and I trust him about as far as I could throw him"

Well that gives little clue as to who your MP is, even if you add that he's usually drunk on subsidised booze

keepforgettingmyusername · 09/04/2019 18:52

Watching the PM with no one to greet her at Angela's gaff made my toes curl.

HesterThrale · 09/04/2019 18:53

Thanks Pesty for posting Donald Tusk's letter. It seems eminently sensible and fair, in suggesting a long extension to avoid repeated cliff edges. And the UK could leave whenever ready, or revoke if preferred.

I must say I'd prefer that, as it gives us more time to come to our senses. Politicians need to make decisions coolly without the pressure of artificial deadlines.

TalkinPaece · 09/04/2019 18:55

I'm still no wiser about the odds of No Deal on Friday
Can I book my Easter holiday or not ? Sad

1tisILeClerc · 09/04/2019 18:56

{Watching the PM with no one to greet her at Angela's gaff made my toes curl.}

Would have been better if there was a note stuck on the door telling May to use the tradesmans entrance.

1tisILeClerc · 09/04/2019 18:58

{Politicians need to make decisions coolly without the pressure of artificial deadlines.}

The problem is they are not listening, or at least not understanding. They have buggered around for almost 3 years and still haven't got up to speed with the fact that they have to decide something.

BelfastBloke · 09/04/2019 18:59

This is going to be the most energised European election campaign ever conducted in the UK.

Many more people than ever before will know who their MEPs are, and some might realise that 'unelected bureaucrats' isn't quite the right term...

frankiestein401 · 09/04/2019 19:02

Apart from usual batshittery why would jrm/erg believe that the uk mep's would do their bidding wry disruption?

woman19 · 09/04/2019 19:02

If the UK is a member of the EU on May 2nd, then EU nationals will be entitled to vote
Don't know if this could be useful to EU/UK folks to register to vote.
www.europarl.europa.eu/unitedkingdom/en/your-meps/european_elections/can_i_vote.html
www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

I'd suggest keeping records of all applications

@lewis_goodall
The 130 or so Tories who voted with the govt tonight are more or less the only MPs on whom the prime minister can solidly rely on matters Brexit. Only around 40% of her MPs.

ElenadeClermont · 09/04/2019 19:03

DH feels very sorry for Mrs Francois. He made me promise that I would drag him off the stage if he ever tried to do a Mark Francois.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 19:04

If the UK denies E27 expats in the Uk a vote in EP elections - OR the local elections - there will be trouble

Why would they have been removed from the electoral role for EP elections anyway

  • because if the Uk Brexits, then obviously the entire EP electoral roll would be void, so it makes no sense to remove E27 citizens from thst

I have already received my voting form in Germany, to go on the register - I'll be voting here, hopefully

btw, reading up EU election rights, I see any EU citizen can stand as a candidate not only in local elections, but also in EP elections.
Brexit has made me learn more about the EU than ever before and appreciate it even more Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 19:06

Begging the EU for more time - while denying E27 citizens their rights under EU law would be incredibly stupid....

and could also cause legal action ot be taken against the UK

Tanith · 09/04/2019 19:09

"Apart from usual batshittery why would jrm/erg believe that the uk mep's would do their bidding wry disruption?"

It's a desperate attempt to stop EU elections in the UK. It won't work; the EU already have the measure of him.

PestyMachtubernahme · 09/04/2019 19:09

Now that evryone has had a crash course in how the HoC and HoL works. How does the EP work?

Hint, most of our MPs have no clue.

Another hint, some of the top brass in Europe use Twitter a lot
