Westminstenders: The gall of the french

We are full steam ahead with European Parliamentary Elections! Something that seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

May still remains adament that they will not happen, but the die has been cast.

May is off to beg Macron and Merkel to back an extension but the French are already stating they want assurances we won't screw thing up for everyone else.

May still is pushing for a deal with Corbyn and a Not a compromise.

Still there is no sign of a breakthrough either for an extension nor over a cross party deal. It drags on, but at least no one has mentioned the WA for ten minutes.

We might yet be in Europe for another Eurovision. Psychologically this feels important.

The ERG are not happy.

I watched the Sky News clip. I think Angela was on the loo when Theresa arrived.

{Someone should tell them about the rarely-enacted Sovereign Defamation Act of 1376 that makes it an offence punishable by being broken on the wheel to publicly accuse the sitting monarch of treason.}

More compelling and informative viewing than Jeremy Kyle.

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 15:24

I never envisaged a day where Her Maj would attract the wrath of the Brexiters.

Predicted on Westminsterenders months ago ...

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 15:26

So, May, Merkel, Macron ...

Possibly the least sticky meeting ever. 3M should sue for giving their adhesives a bad name.

Calloway · 09/04/2019 15:26

They'll be turning on Vera Lynn next.

tobee · 09/04/2019 15:30

Yes Berlin this a.m, Paris this p.m.

The bbc news channel had better footage with TM walking down red carpet alone, going into building, hanging around foyer, Angela finally coming up to shake hands obviously saying the diplomatic equivalent of "Oi! Thought you getting here at quarter past!"

Then they go back outside for handshakes and photos.

You would have thought someone in TM's car would have been on their mobile to say "eta 5 minutes ". Unless they are an ERG infiltrator trying to make a point.

Interesting experience a the hairdressers today. Sat waiting and only papers there were x2 copies of The Express surely 1 is enough? so I immediately made a mental note not to talk about Brexit.

Hairdresser (50+ and English) proceeded to tell me all about her family living largely in Australia and how every time she visits she thinks about relocating. I said I was considering relocating having been accepted for a MA but have a member of family here who wouldn't want to relocate but I can't leave him here. She was massively scathing of UK and urged me to talk it through with him properly, as she could see the difference every time she went. She went on and on about the schools being funded, better healthcare, outdoor lifestyle, how much happier people are...SHE bought up Brexit and said what a complete mess it was and how she can't see a future for young people in this country. She said it was leading to a lack of opportunities and funding for everything and if she had children she would be off! I honestly had pinned her as a Leaver, so today has been a big lesson in not judging a book by it's cover. Of course she may have voted leave and now regrets it, but that is OK with me as long as she does now see what a colossal waste of time, money and energy it is.

OogieMcBoogie · 09/04/2019 15:31

If,as reported in the Guardian earlier, the UK is offered an extension to the end of the year, how likely is TM to accept?

RHTawneyonabus · 09/04/2019 15:32

The Army has no ‘royal’ in front of it (unlike the Navy and Air Force) because the monarch isn’t allowed a standing army. Parliament has to ensure the continued existence of the Army via Acts of Parliament.

MockerstheFeManist · 09/04/2019 15:32

They'll be turning on Vera Lynn next.

Those bluebirds over the white cliffs of Dover are not a native species.
She must have smuggled them in from Lybia.

Indeed it was

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 09/04/2019 15:45

I see Sky News app has a little video headlined "Where's Angela?" with May turning up in Berlin with no one to greet her.

Last time didn't TM get stuck in the car? Maybe the didn't feel the need to rush this time Grin

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 15:48

That rings a vague bell. Tx.

Arguably, we could go back to having no standing army. Switzerland manages ....

It's something that vexed the American rebels when they drafted the Constitution .... quite a lot about standing armies there (and how the tyrant King had "placed them amongst us").

'There will be sparrows over the white cliffs of Dover. '
Not as exotic, but at least they are English birds! (Harder to sing as well. )

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 15:53

Merkel was using the favourite MN method of dealing with unwelcome people who keep calling around:
don't answer the door and hope they go away.

Then she realised May is too thick-skinned to take a hint

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 15:57

UK government in Google bidding war with Brexit deal opponents

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-46399688

The government is paying to promote Theresa May's Brexit deal on Google - but is facing a battle with opponents of the deal using very similar headlines.
.....
And the government ad keeps being knocked off the top spot by a campaign group called "Britain's Future", which says May's deal betrays Brexit.

prettybird · 09/04/2019 15:58

Aren't sparrows becoming an endangered species? Wink

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 15:58

Angela must be a mumsnetter if she doesn't like answering the door! Grin

Paris says one year is "too long" for France for brexit says sky breaking news on app.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/04/2019 16:01

DG Same reason the govt paid for Remain leaflets during the ref ?
i.e. govts always pay to promote their important policies

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 16:03

Oh I see. So for when we get the PV then ? Makes sense now.

tobee · 09/04/2019 16:03
