Westminstenders: The gall of the french

We are full steam ahead with European Parliamentary Elections! Something that seemed unthinkable a few weeks ago.

May still remains adament that they will not happen, but the die has been cast.

May is off to beg Macron and Merkel to back an extension but the French are already stating they want assurances we won't screw thing up for everyone else.

May still is pushing for a deal with Corbyn and a Not a compromise.

Still there is no sign of a breakthrough either for an extension nor over a cross party deal. It drags on, but at least no one has mentioned the WA for ten minutes.

We might yet be in Europe for another Eurovision. Psychologically this feels important.

The ERG are not happy.

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 14:10

Mark Francois calls himself and opponents of May's deal the "Spartan phalanx."

Why, it's almost like he hadn't bothered to watch to stop him spouting bollocks ....

tobee · 09/04/2019 14:12

I want to watch that Mark Francois video woman but I just can't.

tobee · 09/04/2019 14:14

Also my eyes read that Spartan Phalanx as spandex at first.ShockYou don't want the words "Mark Francois" and "spandex" in one sentence, do you now?

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 14:14

I want to watch that Mark Francois video woman

You don't. You really don't. Stroke a kitten instead.

ElenadeClermont · 09/04/2019 14:14

Dilbert also summarises Brexshit

DG, your point about the military (a few posts back) echoes Orwell in 1941.

The mass of the people are without military knowledge or tradition, and their attitude towards war is invariably defensive. No politician could rise to power by promising them conquests or military “glory”, no Hymn of Hate has ever made any appeal to them. In the last war the songs which the soldiers made up and sang of their own accord were not vengeful but humorous and mock-defeatist. The only enemy they ever named was the sergeant-major.

www.orwellfoundation.com/the-orwell-foundation/orwell/essays-and-other-works/the-lion-and-the-unicorn-socialism-and-the-english-genius/

I feel there is a continuity with those underlying attitudes but that there's also been a change somehow - but I find it hard to put my finger on what it is.

Not if you don't want it to pop up in Google against his name because of a sudden spike in usage you wouldn't. Let's just hope it doesn't start appearing in different domains all over the internet. It might stick !

woman19 · 09/04/2019 14:17

Nice video DGR I'm saving that to watch later.
Irony probably lost on Francois that Sparta fought on same side as Macedonians.

Macedonia now is in the queue to join the EU (and has been since 2005)
Sad for us; if we fall out it could take generations to get back in.

woman19 · 09/04/2019 14:19

tobee (perhaps you're right DGR Grin)
Spartan Disco.

Tanith · 09/04/2019 14:23

Wtf is proof of residence then?

When I applied for a British passport, my parents were both British, my father was, at the time of my birth, serving in the British Army and I was myself born in a British Military hospital and had subsequently lived in Britain for nearly 20 years. Prior to that, I had only ever lived on British Army camps.

Not good enough.

My mother had paid for British naturalisation papers when I was born. They weren't proof, either.

They kept asking for more and more information: parents marriage certificate, birth certificates...

In the end, I simply married a Welshman - not the only reason, you understand, but infinitely quicker! Grin

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 14:26

There are tonnes of full length history documentaries on YouTube (which has started pushing ads and trailers on them ...). Some are clearly of dubious provenance, but there's a lot of decent licensed (legal) ones. You can easily lose a few hours ....

prettybird · 09/04/2019 14:27

North Macedonia, if you please, Woman Wink - and their application can now progress now that Greece and it have finally resolved their decades long dispute over its name Smile

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 14:31

Incidentally, rocking a distinctly foreign surname myself (and don't I know it Sad....) I'm curious as to whether the original orthography for Mark F's surname is: François ?

I'm happy to use whatever variant he signals (unlike the MP who insists on anglicising Angela Merkels name) ... it's just personal curiosity.

tobee · 09/04/2019 14:34

I see Sky News app has a little video headlined "Where's Angela?" with May turning up in Berlin with no one to greet her. ShockConfused

woman19 · 09/04/2019 14:34

RONM. You're quite right prettybird Kudos to Greece and Tsipris for facing down golden dawn opposed to peace between the 2 countries. Smile

I caught a bit on a French site yesterday about Mays visit to Paris ... seemed to be making a point that it wasn't in the Palace Elysees ? Not sure if that was setting the tone for the level of meeting or not.

Anyone else imagining Brexiteers EXPLODING WITH FURY AT SNUB TO PM ?

(Not sure why I say "anybody else". Even I'm not thinking that Grin )

woman19 · 09/04/2019 14:42

Happening right now; People's Vote rally. With Betty Boothroyd Halo and Hugh Merriman .Looks like lots more new faces from all parties there.

When I watched the video I thought at any other time this would be put down to perfectly normal way for TM to visit another EU leader. But times like these we proclaim "it's a definite snub!"

So equally, DG, we imagine the Brexiteers "EXPLODING WITH FURY" as reflexively as breathing Grin

TalkinPaece · 09/04/2019 14:57

Tanith
Oh yeah, I also had the
Q . why have you not listed your father's UK address?
A. Because he's never had one
Q why not?
A Because he's not British

A look at my current passport Angry

And this was BEFORE the Hostile environment really ramped up
getting my purple passport only cost £2500 back then Hmm

{I see Sky News app has a little video headlined "Where's Angela?" with May turning up in Berlin with no one to greet her}

Theresa obviously didn't get the message that they were to meet up at a burger van on the ring road.

DGRossetti · 09/04/2019 15:14

Wasn't it Berlin in the morning, Paris in the afternoon ?

Some corkers amongst those frothing against the Queen giving the Cooper-Boles-Letwin-Benn Bill Royal assent Grin

www.thepoke.co.uk/2019/04/09/daily-mail-readers-calling-queen-traitor-todays-best-brexit-thing/?fbclid=IwAR14KO9V9qEttvy6xWh1AmG4EUjlQ37CkWKQOfXwMdPa1cGDSyUmNjDahWo

I particularly liked one of the responses to those calling the Queen a Traitor:
Someone should tell them about the rarely-enacted Sovereign Defamation Act of 1376 that makes it an offence punishable by being broken on the wheel to publicly accuse the sitting monarch of treason.

I mean, it's not like any of them would check.

I never envisaged a day where Her Maj would attract the wrath of the Brexiters.
