We've had a new thread pretty much everyday for the last week or so, so I'm short on inspiration.

There haven't been too many new developments today. There have been two ministerial resignations. Both were ministers close to Boris Johnson.

We had a vote to add an extension if we still have no deal agreed at the end of next week to the Withdrawal Bill. May has said she will do this anyway; this would merely tie her hands. It passed by 5 votes. It now is fast tracked to the committee stage and third reading.

A business of the house amendment by Benn to secure a debate and Indicative Vote 3 next week failed after a speakers vote. Bercow followed convention and didn't create a majority where there was not one (though under Erskine May he is free to do the opposite at his discretion).

Corbyn has met May for talks which have been described as construction, though we have no further details though curiously Emily Thornberry put out a statement demanding a ref on whatever was decided which suggests Corbyn isn't keen on the idea. Rumours are of Schrodingers Customs Union: somehow being in a union but not a union. It can't be called a customs union. And Liam Fox has said Corbyn can't have his union. Though he may have a vested interest as he loses his job if Corbyn gets his way.

Oh and the Commons photocopier broke so no one knows what is currently supposed to be happening.

Otherwise it's been a quiet day, all things considered. Too quiet?

Theresa May will next week pave way to a longer extension in event she is unable to secure her deal
^She will use an 'order in council' in Commons that means the UK can participate in European elections if it has to
Without it, May 22 is hard cut off date for A50 extension^

I have no idea how true this could be. Sounds like something I would want and thus something that won't happen.

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2019 20:14

Pre Brexit, I lived in the UK and had a job

Pre Brexit what's that?

There has never been a time before Brexit has there?

The lion is an African immigrant and will be sent back where it came from.

It's former job will be taken by a badger.

James Patrick 🌱 🌳
@J_amesp
So, just to make sure you are all up to speed:

Parliament just passed a bill which it can’t possibly enforce, and people are once again - miserably clueless as they are - claiming no deal can’t happen, which is entirely inaccurate.

The risk remains unchanged, still.

As soon as anything shifts in that regard, I will be one of the people screaming it through a loud haler. Until then, listen to Mark Carney, listen to Juncker, listen to me if you like. We appear to be the only ones telling the truth still, all else is marketing puff at best.

[I'd add this thread , obviously, but James Patrick seems unaware of it's existance]

InterchangeableEmma · 03/04/2019 20:16

So, those 12(?) missing votes. How do I find out who they are? Haven't found any mention at all on twitter

67chevvyimpala · 03/04/2019 20:16

I think a weasel more appropriate

BigChocFrenzy · 03/04/2019 20:16

QueenMabby On the App, go to the OP, top of the thread,

It's former job will be taken by a badger

Also in the running is a weasel

tobee · 03/04/2019 20:17

horse dd came in to the kitchen several times to find out why I was shouting "shut the fuck up!" to the telly while cooking dinner. Each time it was Bill Cash speaking and me not getting the mute button fast enough.

It's all right people my dd is 23.

Sostenueto · 03/04/2019 20:17

Well I always forget about pm on mumsnet. Just read one from tobeesornottobees.
I'm sorry that I can't comply with your request tobees because this country allows free speech.

MockerstheFeManist · 03/04/2019 20:18

The weasels are currently fully occupied adorning their Lordships, aka the vermin in ermine.

Littlespaces · 03/04/2019 20:18

Maybe the Xerox engineer has gone home.

Backfire effect (from your article)
Whatever the cause, the backfire effect is very curious. The more ideological and the more emotion-based a belief is, the more likely it is that contrary evidence will be ineffective.

Sums it up really.

Icantreachthepretzels · 03/04/2019 20:19

We lose the lion too?

But on the brights side - as long as Wales stays with us we have full access to their dragon.
Iions (which are really leopards) and a dragon isn't too shabby.

tobee · 03/04/2019 20:19

??? @Sostenueto

woman19 · 03/04/2019 20:19

I've got a feeling Ruby has pointed him to the Mumsnet Westminstenders path of Wisdom Truth. Ewe. Wink

Quintella · 03/04/2019 20:19

I rescind my sympathy for the Xerox engineer! Grin It's retribution.

vanitythynameisnotwoman · 03/04/2019 20:20

I'm almost speechless at Thornberry nearly losing Yvette Cooper's bill just because it's not her preferred option. Althought she might know something we don't - like a private conversation with JC that he won't support a People's Vote as long as No Deal is removed. But, even so...

I have found Sir Bill Cash particularly annoying the last couple of days.

Is the Deputy Speaker never allowed to sit in the big chair ?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/04/2019 20:21

Before Brexit I used to do weather forecasting for my hobby. Now I give it a quick glance, check there's no emergency situations brewing and then my mn time is spent on Brexit.
I miss the old days :(

BigChocFrenzy · 03/04/2019 20:21

Bloody outrageous some of the risks that some PV supporters are taking
Thornberry & others abstained on the amendment to remove No Deal ?

Shameful ! Angry

If we end up with No Deal, these hardcore Remain fanatics will deserve a bit of blame too
It's like deliberately blocking the fire brigade after some nutter has set fire to a block of flats

OublietteBravo · 03/04/2019 20:21

Who even knew BBC Parliament was a channel

I did. It’s quite an interesting channel - even when nothing is actually happening in parliament.

Sometimes they show old footage of significant speeches (the Geoffrey Howe one that brought down Thatcher seems to be a favourite). Sometimes they show old election results (no really - they showed Ted Heath’s election victory coverage shortly after he died).

SafetyLightsAreForDudes · 03/04/2019 20:22

Emily Thornberry has posted on Twitter that she's in hospital with one of her children and it was cleared by the whips

Sostenueto · 03/04/2019 20:22

Sorry tobees it was aimed at a poster called tobeesornottobbes

Belindabelle · 03/04/2019 20:22

Brexit has become like Wimbledon in this house.
My friends and family know that when Wimbledon is on I am out of action and glued to the tv. Emails go unanswered, Housework goes undone, children go feral, husband gets neglected.

Quintella · 03/04/2019 20:23

Has Corbyn always worn specs? I've only seemed to notice them today.

MockerstheFeManist · 03/04/2019 20:23

Is the Deputy Speaker never allowed to sit in the big chair?

The deputy speakers repace the speaker in the chair if parliament is sitting. They are currently in comittee, and only have one room big enough for it, and even that only has seats for about five hundred.
