We've had a new thread pretty much everyday for the last week or so, so I'm short on inspiration.

There haven't been too many new developments today. There have been two ministerial resignations. Both were ministers close to Boris Johnson.

We had a vote to add an extension if we still have no deal agreed at the end of next week to the Withdrawal Bill. May has said she will do this anyway; this would merely tie her hands. It passed by 5 votes. It now is fast tracked to the committee stage and third reading.

A business of the house amendment by Benn to secure a debate and Indicative Vote 3 next week failed after a speakers vote. Bercow followed convention and didn't create a majority where there was not one (though under Erskine May he is free to do the opposite at his discretion).

Corbyn has met May for talks which have been described as construction, though we have no further details though curiously Emily Thornberry put out a statement demanding a ref on whatever was decided which suggests Corbyn isn't keen on the idea. Rumours are of Schrodingers Customs Union: somehow being in a union but not a union. It can't be called a customs union. And Liam Fox has said Corbyn can't have his union. Though he may have a vested interest as he loses his job if Corbyn gets his way.

Oh and the Commons photocopier broke so no one knows what is currently supposed to be happening.

Otherwise it's been a quiet day, all things considered. Too quiet?

TalkinPaece - racist posts? You? confused
Flowers nice to see you back.

horseshit · 03/04/2019 20:05

How long does committee stage last? Will they have a division for each amendment? If a single one of the ERG ones passes the bill is toast...

MockerstheFeManist · 03/04/2019 20:05

If you are military, you are an honourable and gallant lady or gent.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 03/04/2019 20:06

You can always rely on a photocopier to stuff things up at the appropriate time.

Why is Bill Cash still talking? Can someone make him stop?

Runningintothesunset · 03/04/2019 20:06

@hazardghost with my course you can make it as interactive as you wish. There are face to face tutorials if you like contact, online tutorials if you want to do them from your kitchen, or they’re recorded if you want to get the info but not take part. There are forums which again you can participate on or not.

MockerstheFeManist · 03/04/2019 20:06

How long does committee stage last?

See 'how long is a piece of string?'

GaspodeWonderCat · 03/04/2019 20:06

wheresmymojo Is anyone else wondering what they did with the time and headspace before Brexit was a thing

I studied with the OU (history, physics). I did not know about mumsnet, never watched BBC Parliament and had time to do stuff ...

Now I log onto westminenders and drink my morning cup of tea, nod sagely at the (mostly) wise posters and agree to join chevy67 on the barricades if it comes to it. Oh and admire the photos of cats, dogs and assorted veg patches. And the ever evolving use of PMK ..

tobee · 03/04/2019 20:07

No worries Louise my fault for not adding Grinor Wink

Sostenueto · 03/04/2019 20:08

My dog is feeling neglected cos every time I pick my phone up to come on these threads she starts barking at me to pay her attention. So off for a bit to play one sided game of ball. ( she only brings ball back when we are on beach, if I throw it indoors she chases it looks at it then barks for me to get up and retrieve said ball sit down and chuck it again!) Obviously I can't do this more than twice so she chews it up instead! Oh for a pair of legs that work!

Pre Brexit, I lived in the UK and had a job. Now I wake up every morning and wonder what crazy has happened in the morning while I slept. I then try and focus on household tasks, the last couple of weeks have t been so good for that.

bellinisurge · 03/04/2019 20:09

Thank you Red. More superheroics from you. Much appreciated. I look on these threads for news first.
And then I comfort eat.Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 03/04/2019 20:10

TiP No Deal won't convince hardcore Brexiters that they made a mistake.
They can never admit that, or their whole belief system crashes

All bad consequences of No Deal will be blamed on:
EU punishment, Remainer sabotage, immigrants,
plus Carney & Bercow for those who've been watching the news

The "backfire effect" is especially powerful among those of an authoritarian bent

backfire effect
http://www.skepdic.com/backfireeffect.html

a term used to describe how some individuals when confronted with evidence that conflicts with their beliefs come to hold their original position even more strongly

The more ideological and the more emotion-based a belief is, the more likely it is that contrary evidence will be ineffective

Belindabelle · 03/04/2019 20:10

I am getting a bit fed up with this committee stage. Did you know that Bill Cash is older than Ken Clarke?

dontcallmelen · 03/04/2019 20:10

PMK, thank you Red & as always my appreciation for the knowledge & good humour, I have been out all day with my dgd so have no idea what’s occurring.

Violetparis · 03/04/2019 20:11

The Guardian Live reporting is saying that Emily Thornberry abstained on the Cooper amendment as she and other People's Vote campaigners fear if no deal is taken off the table Corbyn won't then go for a second referendum. I just think this is a really risky, irresponsible strategy, surely removing no deal should be a priority.

prettybird · 03/04/2019 20:11

TalkinPaece HmmSad

RedToothBrush · 03/04/2019 20:12

The poor Xerox engineer

No! I've met too many Xerox engineers in my time. It's divine justice. Believe me!

They are supposed to turn up at 9.30am but only shown up at 4pm. They potter around for a while and then act like builders who whistle between their teeth at a problem and then go... "essshhh this is gonna take a long time" when you've got a deadline in 2hrs time and still got shit loads of printing to do and have been tearing you hair out all day.

Then they sit there drinking coffee wanting for it to turn 5pm and go 'Seeeeee yaaa tomorrow' leaving you to try and work out a way to break it to the customer that their stuff isn't ready yet but you'll pack it up and deliver it to site three hours away for the very important meeting they have the following afternoon.

Then to really cap it off, the Xerox engineer turns up the next day, actually does some work and has it finished in 5 minutes flat but he's happy cos he got home the previous night at 5.10pm and didn't get put on the call 2hrs away the following day.

I might have a 'thing' about Xerox engineers making me twitch. Just don't set me off about comic sans...

Dare I PMK? My intention is not to clog up the thread - I just don’t know how to “watch” on my phone. Thanks Red. Sterling work as usual.

Littlespaces · 03/04/2019 20:12

We lose the lion too?

It just gets worse. Sad

BigChocFrenzy · 03/04/2019 20:12

I get most of my news from Westmininsters !

All the news and analysis gets collected here and disected

dreichuplands · 03/04/2019 20:12

She trusts Corbyn about as much as I do!

Quintella · 03/04/2019 20:13

The No Deal Ultras would never in a million years accept that they're the ones who made the wrong choice. There will always be someone else to blame.

horseshit · 03/04/2019 20:13

Did you know that Bill Cash is older than Ken Clarke? I know that I’m not a violent person and can enjoy obsessing over details no matter how objectively boring. But GOD I want to punch him in the face just so he’ll shut the fuck up already.
(Would never do it. Not advocating it.)
