We've had a new thread pretty much everyday for the last week or so, so I'm short on inspiration.

There haven't been too many new developments today. There have been two ministerial resignations. Both were ministers close to Boris Johnson.

We had a vote to add an extension if we still have no deal agreed at the end of next week to the Withdrawal Bill. May has said she will do this anyway; this would merely tie her hands. It passed by 5 votes. It now is fast tracked to the committee stage and third reading.

A business of the house amendment by Benn to secure a debate and Indicative Vote 3 next week failed after a speakers vote. Bercow followed convention and didn't create a majority where there was not one (though under Erskine May he is free to do the opposite at his discretion).

Corbyn has met May for talks which have been described as construction, though we have no further details though curiously Emily Thornberry put out a statement demanding a ref on whatever was decided which suggests Corbyn isn't keen on the idea. Rumours are of Schrodingers Customs Union: somehow being in a union but not a union. It can't be called a customs union. And Liam Fox has said Corbyn can't have his union. Though he may have a vested interest as he loses his job if Corbyn gets his way.

Oh and the Commons photocopier broke so no one knows what is currently supposed to be happening.

Otherwise it's been a quiet day, all things considered. Too quiet?

Assuming this is a decision as a result of the the talks between Labour and the Govt.

finishers · 04/04/2019 19:13

And I know the thread has moved on but thanks for posting the article spudlet it is shocking isn't it?

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 04/04/2019 19:14

StripeyChina Flowers

I am so sorry. It is appalling what you and so many others have been put through. There is only one word for all of this, and it is indeed 'evil'.

Peregrina · 04/04/2019 19:15

There are definitely people round here who would take staying in Europe if Hs2 got cancelled.

But then in a by election in Bucks a few weeks back, all the main parties got slaughtered and the Green got in. All to do with nimbyism - house building in green belt and HS2.

As for the town and parish local elections: it really gets me when Leavers preach about "that's democracy, what don't you understand" because they turned out once for a referendum and never bothered before or since. Get out there, put your name forward, collect the signatures, get your forms in to the electoral office, go out canvassing, or addressing envelopes and delivering leaflets, and only then come along and talk to me about your ideas of democracy.

StripeyChina · 04/04/2019 19:16

Thanks BCF I didn't mean to bleat on a personal level.

But people are more than 'economically (un) viable units'.
They may be carers for disabled children (me).
They may be volunteers in Schools / Churches / Foodbanks.
They may contribute to society in all kinds of ways.
But to the DWP they are 'surplus/a drain on society'.
It's horrible and I am genuinely frightened for my children.
For all UK kids, actually. Sorry, I'll go back to reading now.
These threads are amazing. My meds mean my concentration is variable. I'd have no chance of processing even 10% of it without you!

Songsofexperience · 04/04/2019 19:16

BREAKING: Govt Chief Whip announces that following internal discussions, #CooperLetwinBill will have 2nd Reading later tonight, with remaining stages taking place on Monday (8th April) in 'timely fashion' to allow Commons to consider any Lords amendts

Cooper bill is getting 2nd reading tonight after all.

Horehound · 04/04/2019 19:16

But so i thought most mps don't want to ask us again!

Justanothermile · 04/04/2019 19:18

Stripey, I'm so sorry that this degrading and shameful experience happened.

finishers · 04/04/2019 19:18

Yes so as Horehound says if MPs don't want a PV we won't get it - will we?

Horehound · 04/04/2019 19:19

So do mps vote on it again after the lords have had their say and amendments?

Peregrina · 04/04/2019 19:20

StripeyChina - your post has horrible reminders of Nazi Germany's 'useless eaters'.

I know that Leavers get rattled about comparisons with Nazi Germany but if a cultured educated society as theirs was could descend into barbarism, then it can happen to any.

67chevvyimpala · 04/04/2019 19:20

Amazing how many people I know - local business owners etc - who didn't vote in the EU ref.

My bil has never voted. He's 42. He works in the EU.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 04/04/2019 19:23

Bloody hell, stripy

Really sorry you were treated like that by that awful assessor!

StripeyChina · 04/04/2019 19:24

Thanks Maud and finishers too.

My ds (14) just got awarded DLA for his ASD. He attends a really rough Academy and daily is called a 'spaz', 'flid', 'retard' 'mong' etc :(
He asked me yesterday: 'Mum, you've not told anyone about my DLA have you?' I said that School knew as they'd contributed to the application form. He was worried. He said that kids were talking about 'benefit bastards and how they should all be burned alive'. Scarily, these are really poor kids themselves. A high % of them get free school dinners etc. And THEY are picking up on the 'divide and rule' vibes in society. It's heartbreaking. I really will shut up now, sorry.

Littlespaces · 04/04/2019 19:24

Confirmatory Referendum

What is the betting that they have already stitched it up so all the Tories, the DUP and Labour rebels vote it down, & we never get a say on 'Brexit reality' (as opposed to 'Brexit we can have everything dream')?

And many young people will be voiceless.

New thread which looks like it's already out of date

StripeyChina · 04/04/2019 19:28

x post. Thanks to everyone, esp BCF, for being kind. Back to politics :)

Littlespaces · 04/04/2019 19:28

so this is basically showing defiance and pretending Brexit is a war, to explain away the casualties & damage

Just tonight a Leaver family member said the two things that piss me off. 17.5 million people can't be wrong and 'we will get through, we won the war'.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhh,

BigChocFrenzy · 04/04/2019 19:29

I understood it meant passing the WA, subject to it being repealed after a CV if voters chose Remain,
or enabling an immediate Brexit if voters chose that.

May & Corbyn are discussing the PV, which would be tied to the WA.

horseshit · 04/04/2019 19:31

It’s amazing how the rhetoric has changed, isn’t it? Even most Brexiteers no longer pretend no deal is going to be a success, so they’ve switched to “It won’t be that bad, we won the war”. Makes you wonder what would have happened if leave had campaigned on “it won’t be as bad as the war”...

Littlespaces · 04/04/2019 19:33

People will probably vote for the WA over Remain without even bothering to read it. They will glance at the Daily Mail and that will be that.

BigChocFrenzy · 04/04/2019 19:34

Horrifying that such terms are used in school, stripeychina ShockSad

Isn't that hate speech though, which should be banned in schools ?

The name-calling is as bad as my 1960s schooldays, but there wasn't any benefit-bashing then or wishes to "burn them alive",
not in my schools at least

Littlespaces · 04/04/2019 19:34

I'll be honest with you all. They just see it as winning a war now.

HazardGhost · 04/04/2019 19:37

StripeyChina sorry you had to go through that 💐 DP's report conclusion was so fecking random I wouldn't have known it was him! I really hate PIP, the form is awful, assessment intrusive and the report nonsensical. Sorry your lad is having a hard time at school. And don't feel you have to shut up, you have a right to speak up however and whenever you like ❤
