Westminstenders: Pragmatism versus Purity

There is one question for the HoC in the next week and that's will you persue pragmatism or purity?

May looks as if she is being sidelined after a backbench withdrawal of support, the DUPs withdrawal of support and an omminous silence eminenating from the Cabinet.

Her speech on Thursday where she pitted the people against parliament has been her last mistake. She's now a danger to the country's stability and the safety of MPs.

The priority for the week is to pass the SI to change the UK exit date from 29th March to the EU's new terms.

After that, with May's deal stuffed due to lack of support and a Bercow ruling it looks like we are facing some sort of indicative free vote. This seems to be being supported by ministers in government regardless of leave or remain.

The prospect of a Tory Leader Election contest looms. It remains to seen if that can happen in the next three weeks with so much else at stake. But this is the Tory party.

The penny seems to be finally dropping about the reality of leaving the EU and how we leave the EU. A week before we were due to go. The incompetence of Parliament is laid bare in all its glorious full scale.

It's exactly that: pass the WA and you get a true beleaver. Watch this space. No deal won't be now but the battle has only just begun.

LonelyTiredandLow · 24/03/2019 18:01

I'm wondering if she will give Gove a chance to lead to flex his muscles on his NI/GFA stance. Nothing would amaze me right now. Agree they all look like they are heading for a Bunga-Bunga party rather than an official meeting

bellinisurge · 24/03/2019 18:02

Perhaps Rees-Mogg should protect his child better from inevitable photos on a high profile visit.
Like Baron Trump , it's not the child's fault he has a twat for a father. Who knows how he will grow up but he should be left alone unless and until he's an adult in the public eye making decisions that affect people.

Songsofexperience · 24/03/2019 18:02

The WA does not guarantee a customs union. If Ireland is reunited in the next couple of years, then all becomes possible. I bet business is 1000x more important for them than the integrity of the UK.

bellinisurge · 24/03/2019 18:03

[whispers it ] - United not reunited

Songsofexperience · 24/03/2019 18:09

Yes bellini, it was autocorrect...

prettybird · 24/03/2019 18:16

I was misleading about the swing in my constituency: it was a swing of c24,000 Shock - from 8,000 to 26,700 for the SNP and from 20,700 to 14,500 for Labour Shock

Anyway, for your amusement, here is Tom Harris' video made 4 days before the election. He'd obviously been getting mullered on the doorsteps and knew he had nae chance Grin

Don't give up home: swings like this can happen! Grin although maybe not with Corbyn in charge Sad

The Brexit farce is about to turn to tragedy
www.ft.com/content/5f3df8bc-4c03-11e9-bde6-79eaea5acb64 not pay walled.

Excoriating. Uncomfortable. And well worth your time - whatever your Brexit views.

Are the seatbeltless ones driving on private road into checkers? Think it's legal to do that? They're all into personal freedom and smallest state possible philosophy so probably get off on driving like that.

Re the Euro elections I think I heard the EU would be against that happening because it would be bad message/be disrespectful etc?

Littlespaces · 24/03/2019 18:20

My MP's majority is evaporating looking at the petition. Ha!

tobee · 24/03/2019 18:21

Seems to be behind paywall Pesty?

TalkinPaece · 24/03/2019 18:23

Andrew Adonis walked past us yesterday in Parliament square.
Smaller than I thought.

The family members we took with us are rich London natural Tories.
They were very nervous about going on a "protest" but loved it.
More to the point, the scales have utterly dropped from their eyes ;
they were in that crowd - they know that the BBC were underplaying the numbers
they will never fully trust the media again without fact checking
and they will struggle to vote Tory again
and their FB friends were utterly gobsmacked (and impressed) that they came folks from those schools just do not do that sort of thing
they - and their kids - are now politically motivated
RESULT

Tobee it let me in via a twitter link twitter.com/BBCkatyaadler/status/1109774222472155136

PestyMachtubernahme · 24/03/2019 18:29

Constituency finder has been updated Grin

SandAndSnow · 24/03/2019 18:42

This might be a silly question, but I was wondering what you mean by nation-building in this contact Hester?

tobee · 24/03/2019 18:43

Thanks Pesty.

LonelyTiredandLow · 24/03/2019 18:47

Re the State Broadcaster - I told a friend a lot of people on the march were angry with them for saying "thousands" and she said on the broadcasting they were definitely saying a million. So I sent her the link to the news on the website to show her (and had explained they were the only source other than the Torygraph disputing 1mil) and she said at the time she thinks others were also saying a few thousand - main thing is they have now updated it...Hmm. She's still sure they aren't biased. Definitely something you have to have a revelation about though.

doIreallyneedto · 24/03/2019 18:48

@bellinisurge - [whispers it ] - United not reunited

Technically, it would be reunification. We had a high king of Ireland, back in the day. It is over 800 years ago though.

Horehound · 24/03/2019 18:48

The BBC definitely 1 million at one point yesterday.

AwdBovril · 24/03/2019 18:52

Pesty what a coincidence Grin

PestyMachtubernahme · 24/03/2019 18:54

Awd no coincidence.
An orphan page (from 2017 election) that had suddenly been picked up by search engine due to key words.

InterchangeableEmma · 24/03/2019 18:55

They didn't say it was a million. They said it was being reported as a million. There is a significant difference

twattymctwatterson · 24/03/2019 18:55

Starting to feel a sense of desperation. Wondering what Alexa would do if I asked her to overthrow the government?
