Westminstenders: Flextension

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 22:37

Just wrote an intro and wiped it. So this is as quick as I can sum up.

EU response is extension to 22nd May if May passes her deal by 29th March

Or an unconditional extension to 12 April which could be extended with a plan and understanding to take part in EU elections.

This isn't what may wanted. It gives her less time and leverage

It opens up the possibility of her being ousted as PM in the next couple of days. Graham Brady asked her to quit on Monday. Remain Cabinet ministers are threatening to quit if May whips a vote to support no deal.

The talk is May has indeed flipped to supporting no deal with many think she's pretty much gone full on Colonel Kurtz.

The EU are in effect supporting parliamentary sovereignty and are being incredibly reasonable.

May now has to decide whether to accept.

The whole situation looks explosive and likely that one half of the cabinet or the other are on the brink of walking. And May's power is so shattered.

However she remains the gatekeeper and as it stands if she's hell bent on no deal, it will be extremely difficult for Parliament to prevent that.

It’s happening to me too singing no clue how to stop it

SingaSong12 · 22/03/2019 18:02

I agree with the sentiment of children signing the petition but don’t think they should if the idea is that public pressure should force revoke. Some leavers with influence can say - well of course it’s three million but a lot are under voting age and shouldn’t count so the whole petition should be ignored. (I actually think that’s rubbish but so is Brexit).

BigChocFrenzy · 22/03/2019 18:04

“Don’t worry about the legal side of things, the national organiser is sorting that out.” Hmm

Well, that won't work from Monday, when emergency powers are available.

Even this weekend, these drivers are committing offences, which might of course be tolerated from on high, to try to reduce the PV march numbers

BercowsSilkTie · 22/03/2019 18:05

I kept getting a sky pop up when I tried to access my inbox. Must have had to resign in 5 times before it stopped.

Trekkingbeyond · 22/03/2019 18:05

Jeez what the hell is happening to our country! Shock

Peregrina · 22/03/2019 18:09

Don’t worry about the legal side of things, the national organiser is sorting that out.

Cue lots of lorry drivers getting ticketed for motoring offences, if the organisation is as good as Farage's.

BigChocFrenzy · 22/03/2019 18:09

I don't get this babooshka on Safari or on App.
I use iPad Pro, IOS 12.1.4

on iPad and iPhone, you can go to Settings ==> Safari and swipe "Block pop-ups" to ON

Also, always useful there to set to ON:

"Prevent Cross-Site Tracking"
"Ask Websites not to Track Me"
"Fraudulent Website Warning"

BercowsSilkTie · 22/03/2019 18:10

Someone I know works for the highways agency and is on nights tonight. M62 is on his patch so he's in for a fun night!

DGRossetti · 22/03/2019 18:10

Meanwhile, it seems the IRA have named the Birmingham pub bombers ... just to add to the mix ....

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-47670167

...

At inquests into the deaths of the 21 victims, "Witness O" named the men responsible as Seamus McLoughlin, Mick Murray, Michael Hayes and James Gavin.

...

ElenadeClermont · 22/03/2019 18:12

We saw the rendition flight a couple years ago in Newcastle. Looked scary. Also a bit out of place.

Random18 · 22/03/2019 18:15

@Babooshka yes. Even commenting now has been bloody difficult.

Come on mumsnet - get it sorted

NoWordForFluffy · 22/03/2019 18:16

The pop up / redirection issue was meant to stop after 6pm. I've got pop ups turned off but it hasn't stopped this one. It's rendered MN virtually unusable at some points today.

Random18 · 22/03/2019 18:16

And I have cleared cookies , pop up blocker on. Have tried all the other iPhone suggestions and keeps on happening - on 2 IPhones

HepzibahHumbug · 22/03/2019 18:19

The go slow is a thing. It's started. But I agree with RtB. A peaceful protest against a peaceful protest.
And maybe these people can't take time off work to march?
Everyone has a right to peacefully make their point.
Stay cool and enjoy the march tomorrow Smile

BigChocFrenzy · 22/03/2019 18:22

Biting assessment in Irish Times of what EU think about May, the HoC & what happens next:

www.irishtimes.com/opinion/theresa-may-is-finished-and-the-eu-knows-it-1.3835083?mode=amp

A national change of heart on the whole Brexit business would still be welcome in Brussels but it is not expected,
and
the priority is to escort a troublesome ex-member off the premises with a minimum of disruption before those MEP ballots get under way.

Does May like this plan?
It doesn’t matter.
She wasn’t in the room where it happened.

The summit conclusions were handed down to the petitioning nation as it paced around an antechamber.

This is the power relationship between a “third country” and the EU.
Britain had better get used to it.

The terms of the extension are not drafted for the prime minister’s benefit.

They contain a message from the EU direct to the House of Commons.
In crude terms:
piss or get off the pot.

If you want to leave with a deal, vote for the damned deal.
If you are foolish enough to leave without a deal, do not blame us.

Have a couple more weeks to think about it.
But if you want something else, a referendum or a softer Brexit, work it out soon.

And then send someone who isn’t May to talk to us about it.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 22/03/2019 18:24

The M5 Brexit go-slow protest has just started and is already causing chaos around Exeter. Good luck to anyone travelling up from Devon and Cornwall for the March tomorrow

Worth seeing this: twitter.com/DC_Police

I expect other police forces to take a similar approach.

MissMalice · 22/03/2019 18:27

I expect other police forces to take a similar approach.

My local force is taking that approach.

woodpigeons · 22/03/2019 18:28

I am getting pop.ups on my iPad. It seems to be only when I go on t he mumsne t brexit thread as I've got on others OK but can't be sure. No way to get out of them without closing the thread down.
Certainly it is ok on twitter, fb and newspapers.
It's usually virgin media but on e was from aldi.
No problems with this ancient kindle.fire which.has been abused by children.
Its a bit spooky.

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2019 18:28

Yeah from that article about the go slow

There were queues on the A30 near Bodmin but Devon and Cornwall Police swiftly pulled protesters over in a lay-by.

Nine vehicles were stopped - the front two were reported for inconsiderate driving.

Inspector Si Jenkinson tweeted: "We recognise the right to protest and make views clear but we will not tolerate careless and inconsiderate driving on our roads.

"We engaged with organisers before the go slow began, they ignored our advice to stay in lane 1 and limit speed to no less than 45mph."

So if this is the case, then the protest is going to fizzle out.

DUP have said they won't support the deal next week. Just heard on Sky news

bellinisurge · 22/03/2019 18:28

For anyone freaked out by the leaked stuff in the Guardian- which looked like "worst case scenario " stuff to me - please consider heading over to the Preppers topic for some ideas.
In short, consider camping options as a short term measure or explore other options if you are "interested ".
I can only hope that in the unlikely event of any heavy duty difficulties arising from a No Deal scenario, every one will be affected so there will be larger scale advice.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 22/03/2019 18:29

Thanks Bigchoc. I had all those setting as you suggested other than ask websites not to track me. Have now swiped that.

Adequatefood. Just read some of the thread I missed earlier. I’m so sorry to hear about your MiL and wish her well. Flowers

woodpigeons · 22/03/2019 18:30

Mine usually asks me if I want to open a pop up.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 22/03/2019 18:33

woodpigeons. I think you’re right - it just seems to be happening on this particular thread. It’s getting more frequent as well.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 22/03/2019 18:34

Mine has a close button but if you click it just takes you to another page and you then have to reload mumsnet. Pressing back page works temporarily but it just seems to pop up again almost instantly.

I feel like we’re being targeted...🤔
