Real-time counters are really just auto-refreshing behind the scenes - they will still be creating load on the data servers, just not the actual web page server.

The other website counting the petition numbers website is also crashing! but this petition counter from Open Data Institute Leeds seems to have less traffic If you want to keep up with the numbers of votes cast .. its not so pretty , but does give up to date info
