Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

There's also the late-in-the-day realisation of the DUP that any new Tory leader will give less of a shit about NI than the English electorate (if that's possible) and they might suddenly see the underside of a bus with £350 million on the side.*

DG I’ve just laughed out loud in the middle of a tube carriage.

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/241584
Interestingly I signed just after 4:30 and my confirmation email has not come through yet
so that means there is a backlog of at least an hours worth of signatures
and the number is rising at 350 every ten seconds
so over 125,000 have signed but not shown up ......

Littlespaces · 21/03/2019 17:48

Shouldn’t Brexiters (and all of us) be more concerned about ensuring that these Leave voters’ voices are heard in the future – like by moving from FPTP to proportional representation – than ensuring that they collect their Brexit, this one-off booby prize?

I'll try this idea on my wider family. They are still convinced EU needs us more than we need them. Sad

woodpigeons · 21/03/2019 17:51

Maybe I’m crazy (wouldn’t be surprising atm) but I’ve been thinking how totally wrong it is that one person can turn our government into a dictatorship and make unilateral decisions.
The old boy system of ‘an Englishman’s word is his bond’ seems not suitable for the present day.
Then I thought of the two dictatorships I lived and worked in which were ex British colonies.
I don’t know enough about it but, I know they were ruled by British law and when the countries became independent the new government continued to use that law as there was no alternative and no time to design one.
Both countries, and I am sure there are many others, became dictatorships while at least, in name only, using the law bestowed on them by their colonial masters.
Anyway it certainly seems that parliament needs an overhaul. I don’t think we have an actual constitution and perhaps we need one although god knows who would write it as that could introduce as much back stabbing as Brexit.

BREAKING: UK military has activated team in a nuclear bunker under the @DefenceHQ main building to step up preparations for a no-deal Brexit, @SkyNews can reveal. The crisis management operation – dubbed Operation #REDFOLD – began on Monday 1/

Lock her in the bloody thing.

Comet456 · 21/03/2019 17:53

I can confirm that the government has set up military preparations in advance of fuel shortages.

Don’t ask me how I know, and this is a little used NN, but the government has already had meetings with people who have priority use over petrol - ambulances, public & community bus services etc. In case of fuel shortages, petrol stations will be closed and the army will be deployed to safeguard the few that are open. Petrol is going to rationed.

It is legal for home owners to store petrol in 2 x 5l fuel canisters - so that’s 10 litres only. I live in a rural area so I will keep my car topped us as much as I can but I won’t stockpile petrol as TBH 10 litres won’t go very far. If I have to stay home because of the government’s actions then I have to stay home

Littlespaces · 21/03/2019 17:54

Lock her in the bloody thing.

And the ERG and DUP.

Lots of food & water. Sort the UK out and open it back up in a month.

HazardGhost · 21/03/2019 17:54

Nuclear bunker???

No that doesn't make me nervy at all that. Fine, all is fine.

Fine.

Yup yup.

All okay with me.

Just fab.

cherin · 21/03/2019 17:55

So in summary, IF we had this MV3:

  • the ERG just has to sit tight and do nothing, to achieve the hard Brexit they always wanted;
  • the DUP must vote for TM deal because their only chance to retain their unnatural power (given they’ve been voted by...20.000 people?) is to stay in this government and hope there’s no GE or revolution
  • moderate tories who didn’t vote for the WA before might be faced with the steep edge of the cliff and given 5’ to choose, but are their numbers alone enough to swing it? After what she said yesterday too?

Is it going to be driven by labour MPs at the end?

Runningintothesunset · 21/03/2019 17:57

Courage - I’m going on my own. Are you going east coast mainline or west coast? If the latter send me a message...

BiglyBadgers · 21/03/2019 17:58

I just imagine someone in a snazzy uniform shouting "ACTIVATE THE TEAM" and slamming a fist down on a big red button.

Sostenueto · 21/03/2019 17:58

A comment said by loathsome Leadsom about the petition.....' When it reaches 17.5 million then we may look at it......' I blooming well loathe that woman!

woodpigeons · 21/03/2019 17:58

Little I recently saw a post on Feb saying it was rumoured TM was resigning for medical reasons.
Someone asked ‘Has she been sectioned ?’
Even in these desperate times it made me smile.

yolofish · 21/03/2019 17:58

shamefacedly creeping back on to say I missed out an 'm' in grammatical in my last post, but only on here and not the village pitchfork page. Flay me now...

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 17:59

Jonathan Lis @jonlis1
OK so this is actually much more positive than we feared. It’s not a take-it-or-leave-it extension till May 22. It’s an offer based on our self-imposed red line of not standing in European elections. So time to swallow our pride and damn well stand in them - else the cliff-edge

It's 30 litres in appropriate containers actually. But why would you want to? What do you think's going to happen to petrol supplies?

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 17:59

I'm picturing................Downfall.

TatianaLarina · 21/03/2019 17:59

Jo Maugham QC @JolyonMaugham

Labour's plan is to:

1win (likely) two votes of No Confidence
2 write its Manifesto
3 have a General Election
4 win
5 renegotiate the Withdrawal Agreement
6 get it through Parliament^

in 3 months? Labour may think we're stupid but I don't believe we're as stupid as that.

Sostenueto · 21/03/2019 17:59

1,170,899 signatures

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 18:00

If we lock May and the ERG in a bunker for two weeks, do you think they'd even notice if we revoked?

OP posts:

Is it going to be driven by labour MPs at the end?

No after last night.

cherin · 21/03/2019 18:03

tatiana I’m also inclined to think so, but would you imagine being faced with these 2 choices? Assuming an MP is a decent human being (and I think mine is) the choice must be daunting...

cherin · 21/03/2019 18:05

If she really runs it at the very last minute...principle of democracy is that each one of these votes matters...

Littlespaces · 21/03/2019 18:05

Put a camera in there and we could sell the rights on TV like 'Big Bunker Brother'.

Someone could be crowned Bunker King and Queen.

Cue career in television and the masses would be happy. The money could go towards the hole made by Brexit preparations.

GroovieGazelloo · 21/03/2019 18:06

Yoloface- take good care of yourself eh. Thanks
