Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

A lot of people in the UK are suddenly going to have a very rude awakening. God help us.

{The old boy system of ‘an Englishman’s word is his bond’ seems not suitable for the present day.}

I think I see where the problem lies:
With an EnglishMAN's word, they then go out and get rat arsed and forget half the details so whatever was decided gets diluted.
Having Theresa with a single focus has foregone the 'Rat arse' celebration and has just continued.

BollocksToBrexit · 21/03/2019 18:15

From that link

I was out today in the street of Kemptown with @itvnews, a vast majority want to remain and have a final say vote on deal vs remain. Unfortunately at the end of the day a man came up and started shouting at the TV crew and me. Saying MPs are the problems & we are traitors.

He tried to assault me, grabbed & bent my glasses and for a moment I thought he was going to hit me. 3 grown men had to prise him off me. This is not normal, I’m representing my constituents but @theresa_may has whipped up fear and division with her speech last night

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 18:17

red I'm seriously alarmed if 500 MPs think May is bluffing Shock

I have assumed for about 18 months now, that she would accept No Deal Brexit if a deal can't be agreed in time.

She puts the unity of the Tory Party before anything else and
most Tory members & voters would rebel against a long extension, let alone a Revoke.
So she won't choose either of those options.

Unless Parliament passes either the WA, or at least an amendment to it that she must acept any EU offer of a long extension - with EP elections -
then it's No Deal Brexit 1 week tomorrow

TheElementsSong · 21/03/2019 18:18

Bloody hell Bollocks - it’s exactly as we all said was going to happen and it’s started already. Well done Theresa Angry

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 18:19

Petition timelag now at nearly 2 hours
so that is up to 250,000 names that will appear overnight
and then allowing for it being evening and on all the news outlets, it may well go over 2 million signatures before Saturday ....

I own my domain name so am watching the full web filter

KennDodd · 21/03/2019 18:19

Well I hope that's reported on the news tonight.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2019 18:20

That must be fascinating Talkin.

dontcallmelen · 21/03/2019 18:21

I bet it won’t Ken unfortunately.

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 18:22

Badbad
Both DH and my work go through our hosting service so we often leave the spam filter open in the corner of the screen - its ASTOUNDING how much viagra we get offered every day Grin

prettybird · 21/03/2019 18:25

The petition is being reported on Sky News but I somehow doubt that it will get a slot on the state broadcaster's news Hmm

Runningintothesunset · 21/03/2019 18:27

It was one of the top stories on BBC radio 4 news

tobee · 21/03/2019 18:27

I think she (& the rest of her party) actually put not having a Labour government first. Not just under Corbyn. That's the way to get their MPs by the short and curlies.

I'm sure Labour do the same but there's a definite difference with Tories thinking that they are the natural party of power. Which I don't think Labour has at all. It's still about class etc.

WaterQuarter · 21/03/2019 18:27

Christ almighty, BollocksToBrexit, that's grim reading. So many thugs on the loose these days loving the fact they can dress their thuggery up as being politically engaged.

lonelyplanetmum · 21/03/2019 18:29

OMG I am getting about one WhatsApp every 30 mins from a different school parent asking to join us on Saturday?

prettybird · 21/03/2019 18:31

It wasn't mentioned on the state broadcaster's TV 6pm news Hmm

TalkinPaece · 21/03/2019 18:33

OK, Petition confirmations came through - I'm one of that number
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/241584
And if they are going on at the rate it took to click DH and my messages
its around 4,000 signatures a minute

GingerPCatt · 21/03/2019 18:34

Getting prepped for the march on Saturday. 😁

Gagging orders exclusive on Sky news shows just how many sectors have had to keep schtum.

1tisILeClerc · 21/03/2019 18:39

{It wasn't mentioned on the state broadcaster's TV 6pm news}
Hitting over a million is reported on the BBC website.

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2019 18:40

The EU's patience with the UK is at breaking point over Brexit

https://www.kcl.ac.uk/news/news-article?id=90ebaedc-e625-41fc-b1d4-ea5c6a97e120

Although EU partners have always been in a stronger negotiating position,
they have never sought to “punish” the UK – contrary to a popular narrative pushed by Brexiters.
They’ve simply tried to maintain that Brexit takes place in an orderly fashion.

That task has not been made easier by the May government’s persistent lack of clarity on (or perhaps comprehension of Grin) the consequences of its negotiating position.
........
Until quite recently that lengthier extension would have been granted with few if any formal conditions attached
(partially for fear of being seen to meddle in UK domestic affairs)
but the EU27’s now widespread exasperation has changed that.

Prominent EU players are now openly saying that the UK has to show a major change of direction
– be it a general election, second referendum, or even a dropping of key red lines –
if this extension is to be agreed.

OutwithMyRemit · 21/03/2019 18:40

The petition is down again.

MyNameIsArthur · 21/03/2019 18:41

I did sign the petition but unless it went above 17.5 million, wouldn't it just be read that a whole load of Remainers have voted for article 50 to be revoked, rather than any change in people's minds since 2016?

Would a petition by those who voted to leave in 2016 who have now changed their minds be a better one to do?

LonelyTiredandLow · 21/03/2019 18:41

From the sky link
The Department for Transport told Sky News: "Good government relies on practical decisions being informed by the best advice available and requires the opportunity to make a full consideration of all the available options, without threat of premature disclosure during this live process.

"The decisions involved will have wide implications for the UK, and it is absolutely vital that the process is able to proceed in a safe space, and that officials and ministers are able to have those discussions, and raise potential options and risks, necessary to fully inform the best possible policy decisions."
