Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

Jeez, I hope you don't live near me, TiP, as storing fuel is a stupid and dangerous idea!

And who needs 5L sealable cans when you have a wheelie bin ?

DGRossetti · 21/03/2019 16:57

Its nice to note that the petition story has now made to most major online oulets

Hopefully a few foreign (US/Australian) ones below the fold too.

Runningintothesunset · 21/03/2019 16:57

I’ve decided to come join you all on Saturday - I’ll have to keep everything crossed my face doesn’t appear in the media (was invited to a wedding but had declined due to other commitments just didn’t want to go ) Blush

MissInnocentFace · 21/03/2019 16:58

Delurking (been following for about 8 months or so - thank you to RTB and all contributors!) to say - yikes! I’m pretty sure TiP is local to me. One of my worries about being in a flat is the fire risk if things get chaotic and people do stupid things like storing petrol and being careless with candles.... 😕

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2019 16:59

Well done Runnngintothesunset, you'll have to get a big EU hat to hide your face!

bellinisurge · 21/03/2019 17:01

In case anyone hasn't seen my prepper ramblings DO NOT STORE FUEL.
Keep your car's petrol tank at a minimum of half full. Never let it go lower. Get in that habit now. The best place to store fuel domestically is in your car's fuel tank. NOT ANYWHERE ELSE.

If you run out and can't refuel because there is no petrol , we would have bigger problems as a nation. This is not a likely Brexit outcome anyway.
During the petrol strikes of 20 years ago, if I did have to drive on the motorway I kept at 55. As did everyone else. In towns I did not overrev my car.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2019 17:03

you'll have to get a big EU hat to hide your face!

For some reason, reading that, this tune popped into my head ..

RIP George - one of the greats.

tobee · 21/03/2019 17:03

Sick of May and her too short trousers. Ducks the abuse I will get from huffy types that that is all I can come up with at a time like this

yolofish · 21/03/2019 17:05

I've just been called a 'sad looser who wants to destroy democracy. We didnt fight two world wars for this' on my local FB village page. And oh yes, I did correct the spelling! Tossers.

Fuel: need to refill car tomorrow and also get some unleaded for the mower - cant have the grass going to shit like the rest of the country...

TheWoollybacksWife · 21/03/2019 17:05

Reply: well you certainly didn't.

She looks annoyingly perky and happy. Then Corbyn on screen with his usual resting snarl face.

Draft #EUCO conclusions 👇

Silent on what happens if MV3 fails. But seems to take view that UK position is no EU elections, therefore no long extension

Were you loosening the top button of their shirt which was clearly constricting the flow of oxygen to the brain?

There really should be a rule that you can't speak of the glories of the World Wars unless you were directly involved in either of them. That would quieten things down to a nice silence.

SisterMichael · 21/03/2019 17:09

Some British politicians are “on another planet”, Lamy said, incapable of seeing that Brexit is the infinitely complex diplomatic and legal equivalent of “trying to take the eggs out of an omelette. Even today, they spout the most monstrous nonsense. Many have still not landed in a place one could call reality. The cognitive dissonance is … remarkable.”

Don’t know if this has already been posted. Made me wince.

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 17:09

I'm filling up the car on Tuesday after my weekly outing.

Then walking.

Alberto Nardelli @AlbertoNardelli
UK PM May presented her views to EU27 leaders at #EUCO. I am told she was “evasive” and “tightlipped”. The prime minister was repeatedly asked by several leaders what she would do if MPs vote the deal down. May didn’t answer the question.

Petition appear to be broken again. Down for maintenance...

StripeyChina · 21/03/2019 17:11

Did anyone who emailed the PM get a confirmation email please?

GD12 · 21/03/2019 17:14

A confirmation email for the petition? It went to my spam folder so I'd check there.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2019 17:14

Did anyone who emailed the PM get a confirmation email please?

I got an email I had to click on to register my original email, yes.

The UK constitution is about to put to an ultimate test.

How can it practically stop a prime minister determined to crash the UK out of the EU without a Deal?

(This is going to be fascinating.)

This is not a reassuring tweet.

Fuel : Fuel in a proper container is safe to keep in the boot of the car.

Our local petrol station has mega security (it gets robbed regularly) so the staff can see if people are filling up more than one can or using incorrect containers and they cut the pump.
