What does the rest of the world make of Brexit?

As above really. What do you make of Brexit if you're not in the UK?
I don't want this to happen, no one i know (that will admit it anyway) wants this to happen.

You need to reprogram your translation software. It's not working very well.

pootleposeyperkin · 03/02/2019 18:25

Total word salad

That or some literacy classes...

I was working in Japan when the results of the referendum came through. Japanese colleagues reacted with profound sadness and pity....in retrospect they had understood the implications faster than I or my British colleagues did. I see all these Japanese firms pulling out of deals now (Hitachi for the recent nuclear power plant cancellation, Nissan today for the X trail) and realise how heavily they had invested in us because we were a gateway into the EU. No more. Sad

I’m British living in the UK and despite wishing we had remained I do think that the benefits system/ NHS ...etc that the UK provides makes the UK more vulnerable to being ‘leeched’ from.

Now I think Brexit will do FAR more damage than that but still... I can understand how the older generation, constantly being bombarded with ‘foreigners claiming excessive benefits’ and ‘NHS about to sink’ messages lead to them voting to leave.

The UK is also TERRIBLE for languages, as a country we just don’t bother to learn languages in the way other countries do. So whilst the right to work anywhere in the EU should be beneficial 90% won’t do it as they don’t speak the language.

Both of these issues could have been resolved by the UK government sorting its self out and the EU listening when they said ‘we can’t carry on like this’

It should never have been put to a vote, but let’s not forget that it wouldn’t have been had the EU not laughed in Cameron’s face when he tired to negotiate!

TheElementsSong · 03/02/2019 18:29

if we are going to trade with the rest of the world and make all these fabulous deals, surely it does matter a little bit what the rest of the world thinks.

I think this is one of those Schrödinger's situations: whereby Leavers will say that it's obvious that the world thinks we are Great Wonderful Brave and Buccaneering, hence their eagerness to queue up for tribute Trade Deals; then simultaneously, if it looks like maybe the world aren't impressed with us after all and think we've gone Totally Bursar, who cares what they think, grr-aargh.

sinceIwannatalk · 03/02/2019 18:29

From India. Brexit is hardly on the news here (since there's always enough going on locally!), so we don't hear much about it. There was some bewilderment, though, when British politicians came over for trade talks some time ago, but didn't offer too many products for trade (they did offer services - but these are not of much use in a highly populated country like India, where such services are available already). Amongst the people that do talk about international news however, there's just an active hope that we never go into referendums ourselves. The Indian legal system is very similar to the UK's. And we have similar rhetoric-mouthing politicians too, as well as a polarising media that jumps to distort views, and a sizable population that would believe everything spouted by the aforementioned media and politicians!

I can gargle words too, independence my arse, controlled my foot, research someone didn't do ...yes

1tisILeClerc · 03/02/2019 18:31

I think the citizens of the EU are quite well aware of their individual identities and the EU project takes pains to ensure that it continues.

surferjet · 03/02/2019 18:33

Maybe if the rest of the world thinks we’re an insignificant shit hole they’ll stop coming here.
Result!
We’ll only get people coming who actually want to be here.

TheElementsSong · 03/02/2019 18:33

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 18:36

But if we want other countries to do business with us and take us seriously, we need to start acting like it. Brexit isn't achieving that

SusanWalker · 03/02/2019 18:37

We’ll only get people coming who actually want to be here

Are you saying there are people here currently who don't want to be here? Who came to live in a country they didn't really want to live in?

surferjet · 03/02/2019 18:38

bellinisurge you really need to think further than next week. I know remainers struggle with that.

juneau · 03/02/2019 18:40

We do realise that juneau but unfortunately those who hold power and are given a platform by the British media aren't part of that 48%. They are determined to drive the bus over the cliff and they are what the rest of the world sees and hears

I know - it's sickening. Out of the people that turned out to vote that fateful day 17 million voted leave and 16 million voted remain - it really wasn't a huge difference. But we're all tarred with same xenophobic, backward-looking, colonialist, self-immolating brush.

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 18:40

But @surferjet , if I can't feed my kids all week, that's a bit of a problem.

Sakura7 · 03/02/2019 18:42

"why do i not make sense .... we do not want to be controlled if you want be part of eu have no identity then carry on Eire thats what you wanted ...Independence x"

Nicholas what are you on about? The EU is a union of countries working together for the benefit of its members, it is not a nation state that you need to seek independence from. Ireland actually knows a thing about that given the appalling treatment dished out under British rule. I actually find it quite insulting that you would insinuate that the UK's membership of the EU is in any way comparable to actual oppression by an occupying force in your country.

The problems in the UK are due to domestic government policy, not the EU. But a lot of people are too thick to see that and would rather buy into the horrible right wing rhetoric.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 03/02/2019 18:42

Of course if you're an insignificant shit hole why would anyone want to come Confused? Clearly Surferjets main concern is keeping out the 'furrin' but given the UKs dependence on foreign workers it should be careful what it wishes for.

Sakura7 · 03/02/2019 18:43

Also Nicholas the name of the country is Ireland, not Eire. But I think you know that.

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 18:45

Their translation software needs an update, as I suggested before.

surferjet · 03/02/2019 18:45

Haven’t you been prepping for months?
surely you have enough food by now to feed the entire country for 12 years.

surferjet · 03/02/2019 18:46

What’s ‘furrin’?

MrsTerryPratcett · 03/02/2019 18:47

Who cares what the rest of the world thinks?

Well no one if trade isn't important. I mean we grow all our own food and don't have to rely on imports, right?

Someone's been reading a little too much Richard II and getting riled up.

captainjackandjill · 03/02/2019 18:47

Not from the UK, but with British and Irish background. No one here is here is laughing, just worried and concerned. I notice some people on the Brexit boards seem to forget that there are actually people (children/elderly/disabled etc) involved who will be affected.

And to Ihopeyourcakeisshit, I'm not from the UK and it was my comment about the bleach. I am a general prepper and was simply giving advice and even mentioned that I didn't know if it was of value for Brexit.

It was up for grabs for anyone who may have a water source that could be at risk. It is a fear I live with as we have had contaminated water due to flooding (many places in the world are subjected to the wrath of Mother Nature, even areas of the UK). Bleach is super cheap and could save someone's life if their drinking water becomes non-potable (water is also necessary to cook many foods/brush teeth/for pets etc). Look up directions on the internet. What the hell is the problem with sticking a small bottle in your stores just in case?!

Do not blame remainers for my comment. And I hope you are never in the position of having your water contaminated. Look up Flint Town, it's seriously shit. Flowers for Flint Town

bellinisurge · 03/02/2019 18:48

I'm a prepper @surferjet . I rep for all sorts of things. But other people aren't. Especially people who are seduced by the "it'll all be fine" bollocks. They are in for a nasty shock. Finding out you've been a sucker makes people a bit cross. Weirdly, they don't say, " well there will be a great trade deal in a few years so I'll just wait it out with a smile on my face ".
