To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

I've got about 8 tins of mackerel. Does that count as stock piling?
I'm a bit worried about food shortages but I have no clue what kinds of food will be affected. I'm on a special diet to help with my MS. (Paleo type stuff.) So no dairy, grains (bread, rice etc,) no beans/pulse, sugar I'd imagine meat, fish and veg will go up in price.....and I can't stockpile that too much in case there's a power cut.
I'm screwed aren't I?

@Plughole3
You know Armageddon has arrived when Macdonalds has no chips.
So FYI people. That’s a warning sign.
You’re 200kilos of cous cous will be no use to man or beast

For those asking why, this is a really good piece about the 'just in time' system we have and how precarious it is: www.politics.co.uk/blogs/2018/07/27/this-is-what-no-deal-brexit-actually-looks-like

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 28/07/2018 16:45

Surely McDonalds will still have chips

You know Armageddon has arrived when Macdonalds has no chips.

McDonalds chips are made in Belgium. Next door is the Pringles factory. Wink

ScrubTheDecks · 28/07/2018 16:47

Milkshake, do you think so?
If I buy a 5 or 10kg bag of rice (because I is cheaper that way and we eat a lot of rice) but have only used 3 portions, I have few weeks worth of rice left. If I buy a pack of pasta and use a third the rest goes in the cupboard. A selection of tins so that someone can make a tuna sndeich or sardines in toast, assorted bags of flour and dried goods, each with a bit used up, a normal cupboard can easily add up to more than a week’s food.

Before you start on the freezer: peas, fish fingers, spinach, potato waffles are some of the opened but not even half eaten packs I have.

I wouldn’t call it stockpiling.

Plughole3 · 28/07/2018 16:48

What about the chippie then? And won’t McDonalds be stockpiling Belgium chips to ensure they don’t lose customers?

I’m stockpiling money. I’m not a Brit and the holiday home I have my eye on in the south of England has already dropped by £55,000 since the referendum, so I’m hoping it’ll drop even further. Assuming I’ll be able to travel to the UK to visit it, of course.

It’s surreal. I can’t believe you lot have done this to yourselves.

Plughole3 · 28/07/2018 16:49

I have shite in my cupboard & 2nd freezer that’s months old. Not stockpiled just bought on a whim & then decided actually I don’t ever want to eat that.

Plughole3 · 28/07/2018 16:51

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 16:53

Tbh I think everyone was surprised that Brexit was voted for, including those promoting it. Nothing should surprise us now and you’d be foolish to think that prices won’t esculate, everyone will see it as an excuse to make extra

BarbarianMum · 28/07/2018 16:53

I'll be stockpiling some dried/canned foods and cleaning products- because I think prices are likely to soar in the short-term if for no other reason.

17 million have done this...

Blackteadrinker77 · 28/07/2018 16:56

I feel like I need a tin foil hat reading this.

I travel to Europe every few weeks for work and have bookings far beyond March 19.

I predict very little will change. We import 33% of our imported foods from other EU countries. Do you think they will stop selling to us? If they tamp up the prices etc be sure one of the other countries will under cut them.

hambo · 28/07/2018 16:56

I keep stockpiling tinned peaches and pineapple and my son keeps eating them! I'm doomed 'cos he can eat faster than I can stockpile!!!

Ohmmmnm · 28/07/2018 16:56

I stockpile anyway because i’m in benefits and will have to switch over to universal credit soon.

It’s also a great way to save money. I buy toilet paper in bulk from eBay or Groupon, 10 kilo bags of rice from the Chinese supermarket, spices and dried herbs from Asian markets. I also have a pretty impressive collection of dried legumes Blush

I am currently pretty chuffed with my new ecoegg that can do a years worth of laundry for £15. I’ve only done a couple of loads so far but it works quite well.

noblegiraffe · 28/07/2018 16:58

Why would you want to buy a holiday home in a country where your neighbour is arming themselves with the aim of stealing your couscous?

UglyCathKidstonBag · 28/07/2018 16:59

This thread is hilarious

Why?

Blackteadrinker77 · 28/07/2018 17:00

You just made me spit me tea out, I now have to stock pile 3000 t-bags!

I have a plan.

Please see rough diagram attached, and replace “zombies” with “looters”.
