To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

“there was fruit and veg shortages not long ago and the supermarket shelves were empty. “

Empty? No cans of mushy peas, artichoke hearts or sliced peaches? I can’t store lettuces (current shortage, allegedly) or Cavalo Nero anyway.

I always have about a week ‘s worth of food, if not more, in my cupboards anyway. I’ll mix and match with whatever is available at the time.

If there is no electricity or gas we’ll team up with neighbours and camping friends to each light a BBQ or fire pit each night over which to cook our hot dogs from a jar and imports from non EU, like plantain.

If I lived rurally I might consider keeping hens.

We shop at Costco every 6 weeks so we often have a few weeks supply of things like tinned tomatoes and tuna, pasta, rice, bread flour, oats, beer, pet food etc.

I'm undecided about whether there will be a crisis or not but I think we will make sure that we have some emergency supplies just in case.

And I agree with a PP who said that it's sensible to always have some candles, matches, batteries and a torch or two. Not for brexit but for power cuts. Also, candles are nice!!

Cassimin · 28/07/2018 16:25

So this is what is happening to the hallumi fries in Aldi!
Been none in my local for weeks.

geekone · 28/07/2018 16:25

Those stockpiling medicine. Where is your medicine manufactured? Where is is tested? There is a 70% chance that it is manufactured and/or tested in the U.K. already. Did you check the shelf life and long term storage conditions? Chances are you are not storing properly or the drugs will be out of date soon anyway.

ForalltheSaints · 28/07/2018 16:26

I am not considering stockpiling but am avoiding travelling to Europe for the first three months after March 29th, and avoiding flying for even longer. Usual spring trip to relatives in Europe has been replaced by one in late January.

1JOO · 28/07/2018 16:27

Coming from a back ground of abject poverty ive always had a ‘shop’ of stockpiled dry goods, tins and packets in a spare room. But will now try to get in front with families meds now as well.

HateIsNotGood · 28/07/2018 16:27

I'm stockpiling the proverbial MN chicken.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 16:28

amicissimma I wouldn’t trust this government to do anything Grin they’ve told supermarkets to stock up, supermarkets have said they can’t, to me that means government is worried and I’d rather rely on myself than them. As for imports so much is from Europe that a no deal would mean no imports.

OkMaybeNot · 28/07/2018 16:28

Well nobody knows how it's going to play out, not even the poxy government at this point.

I'm not usually one for hanging onto the government's every word, but I pay attention when they start stockpiling food.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 16:29

scrubthedecks so you do stockpile... a weeks worth of food is a stockpile

PriscillaLydiaSellon · 28/07/2018 16:30

No, I am not. If I stockpile anything, it will lurk on the shelves for 10 years and will then be thrown out as it is 9 years out of date. I think it's a lot of fuss about nothing. And if anyone wants to break in and steal my ancient Basmati rice and Bisto, they're more than welcome.

RedneckStumpy · 28/07/2018 16:31

DH has trapped squirrel, they are great in a stew.

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 16:31

transporteca.co.uk/importing-brexit/

Import regulations, tax etc will slow things up and increase prices

Roussette · 28/07/2018 16:32

You should also be armed and fully prepared to defend your home

I've got a catapult somewhere, that'll do Grin

RedneckStumpy · 28/07/2018 16:34

Stocking up this early will not mean others go without.

Besides we kinda have passed the point of thinking of others. Its going to come down to survival of the fittest and prepared.

Justanothernameonthepage · 28/07/2018 16:36

Only things I know we'll use or that would be a problem is we ran out. I don't think the shortages will last long, but seeing how the country reacted at the thought of a couple of days snow, making sure I have Calpol, Nappies, dried goods etc for a month or two seems sensible to me. I'll use them anyway, will just mean a little extra for a while. I know someone involved in the contingency plans, and they've also advised bottled water (not really sure why, but figure it wouldn't hurt).
Oh and wine. I may as well have the option to view it in a pleasant haze.

craxmum · 28/07/2018 16:38

I always have a 6 months' supply of food and essentials at home.

theymademejoin · 28/07/2018 16:38

@PositivelyPERF - I can envisage a situation where food will come from the South of Ireland, through NI and across to the uk, if things get bad.

Why specifically the south of Ireland? Do the likes of Cork and Waterford have some special stockpile for the UK that isn't available in the rest of Ireland? Or did you actually mean Ireland?

DidimusStench · 28/07/2018 16:38

Yes, we’ve already begun. Non-perishable food, painkillers and vitamins. We add 4-6 items onto our shop every week.

And it’s a carefully guarded secret. Nobody knows what we’re up to. My biggest hypothetical dilemma at the moment is whether I would share our stockpile with members of my family that voted Brexit Grin

Plughole3 · 28/07/2018 16:40

I’m confused, how long will the foodshortage last & will it be a proper food crisis or rather the price & stock of humous may be limited but plenty of Fray Bentos pies to go around?

My plan

  1. I have enough post baby blubber to sustain me for a couple of months.
  2. If I cant get bread or bananas no big deal will buy something else.
  3. Surely McDonalds will still have chips
  4. Get on a ferry to Ireland with my Irish passport & gorge on food over there.
vampirethriller · 28/07/2018 16:42

I can't afford to.

IKnowItsTIMHONKSTIMHONKS · 28/07/2018 16:42

No, I think it's OTT

noblegiraffe · 28/07/2018 16:42

“Be armed and fully prepared to defend your home”

Didn’t see that slogan on the side of a bus.

If the government are stockpiling food then we won’t need to because this government are excellent at organising stuff for the good of the country.

Plughole3 · 28/07/2018 16:42

the South of Ireland where’s that then?
