To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Ninoo25 · 28/07/2018 15:09

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

Childrenofthesun perscripton medicine is only prescribed for 56 days at a time...

PositivelyPERF · 28/07/2018 15:27

I can envisage a situation where food will come from the South of Ireland, through NI and across to the uk, if things get bad. The border agreement will be the UKs saving grace, if May doesn’t fuckbit up.

Skyejuly · 28/07/2018 15:27

No.

anotherangel2 · 28/07/2018 15:28

I am going to chuck a few extra things in my trolley. Even if there are not shortages I am expecting price rises.

VeraViolet · 28/07/2018 15:28

Yep, definitely. I'm freezing lots of bread, and buying cans/tins.

PositivelyPERF · 28/07/2018 15:28

Milkshakeminer in that case you’re in a good position to get a month or so extra.

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 15:29

Food items will increase in price, having a store cupboard full will lead to savings in the long run

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:29

rinabean how would it not help? If there are shortages which seem very likely and there are riots, I’d rather be safe at home eating dinner than trying to find food and potentially putting my son and me at risk by being in that environment of rioting etc

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 15:29

Versviolet why not but flour and yeast?

PositivelyPERF · 28/07/2018 15:30

am expecting price rises me too. That’s one of the reasons I’m putting extra away. Yes, eventually we’ll have to pay the extra, but why wait for prices to go up. Get ahead of the raises.

JadziaSnax · 28/07/2018 15:30

Yep. Mainly tinned, non perishables. I'm not overly concerned however, I'd rather be over-prepared than under-prepared.

Knittedfairies · 28/07/2018 15:30

No.

coolncalm · 28/07/2018 15:31

i don't live in the UK, why are you stockpiling?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/07/2018 15:31

No because I've got nowhere to keep extra food.

CeridwensCottage · 28/07/2018 15:32

I get my cat food from zooplus, who are based in Germany I think. My eldest cat needs a special renal diet and I’ll be ordering extra of that in just so I can maintain his kidneys.

The meds are a worry, so I’ll start requesting scripts earlier I think. I think dh wants to get extra non perishable foods in.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/07/2018 15:32

Oh and I probably wouldn't even if I did have the space.

Hamiltoes · 28/07/2018 15:35

Yes I'm optimistic it's going to get sorted out, BUT i did clear out the cupboard under the sink and am slowly filling it with dried pasta, sauces, tins of tuna, beans and sausage, cereals etc. Stuff we'd eat anyway to be honest and with dates well into 2019/20. I'd rather be prepared and feel silly!

Hamiltoes · 28/07/2018 15:36

cool brexit, the news has been filled this week with stories of expected supply issues.

rinabean · 28/07/2018 15:36

Milkshakeminer if there are the kind of riots I'm envisaging you won't be safe at home. So your tinned beans will at best be helpful as something to throw at someone.

Everyone should keep a bit of spare food if they can at all afford it but if we have a complete lack of food coming in for the forseeable future it's not going to blow over in time for you to get up the shops, it's going to be horrible, an extra bag of pasta is not going to make the difference for your family. People are going to be breaking into houses for food, the fact that you legally own it will not matter, they won't sit back and starve whilst you and yours are fine because you have a receipt. I'm just baffled at people thinking "no imports, and we fully rely on imports?... oh I can fix that by buying some tinned peas".

I think the government is also aware this is how bad it would be so I think they are not going to actually let it get this far, largely because they'd be murdered if they didn't get out of the country soon enough. So either don't worry about this (I am not worried about this and I don't recommend anyone else worries about it either), or really fucking worry. Don't just buy something at the shops, that is literally going to do nothing, that's just stressing you out and wasting your money for no reason.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:37

Even if everything goes really well I think it would still be nice to have some bits in for other situations, even if that’s just you cba to go shop!

PositivelyPERF · 28/07/2018 15:37

CeridwensCottage. 😲 How could I forget about my pets? Bugger. I have three on meds and special diet!

CrabappleBiscuit · 28/07/2018 15:39

poster coolncalm because the government can’t gind a way to solve the stupid impossible conundrum that is Brexit. Because people voted to go back to the 1970s. And warehouses and retailers and manufacturers don’t stockpile food to th3 same extent as they used to. So when border checks come in because of Brexit and the magical border IT system that the PM has based her exit plan on isn’t built....we’re going to be buggered for a while.

GoneWishing · 28/07/2018 15:40

Yes, I'm buying a bit extra every week. Probably won't end up so much as to call it stockpiling. More just well stocked shelves and cupboards that can see us through for a while, if we can't get fresh supplies for a little while for any reason.

Milkshakeminer · 28/07/2018 15:40

I’m not sure where you live but I doubt very much people would break in for food, particularly when they’d have no idea who had stockpiled and who hadn’t.
I don’t think it’s stressful or a waste of money to buy something that you’ll eat, be it due to food shortage or just in general.
Your scenario sounds quite apocalyptic, I think it will be a case of price increases, people panic buying and lack of choice more than anything.

ivykaty44 · 28/07/2018 15:40

To a ran, that’s when they bring the army in & as is reported on much of social media- you know the countries in trouble when we’re preparing as if we’re going to war
