To ask if anyone is considering stockpiling

Just that really, given that the government asking industry to stockpile food and medicines has been all over the news in the past week, I was wondering how many people are planning on stockpiling themselves and if so what are you going to stockpile and how much?
TBH my main concern is long term medication that I’m on, but as it’s only available on prescription and Dr wouldn’t let me order more than I need, so there’s nothing I can do about that anyway!

It’s not the media, it’s the government. They are asking manufacturers and retailers to stockpile. And the manufacturers and retailers are explaining to the govt why they can’t.

Some of it is undoubtedly political fladwaving from the PM to Europe and her party. But the rest is fact.

Gabilan · 29/07/2018 10:29

But then I don’t buy into the whole ‘project fear’ hysteria being whipped up by the remain supporting media

It's not remainers putting about rumours. This is coming from government www.thetimes.co.uk/article/army-on-standby-for-no-deal-brexit-emergency-dz3359lrf

And that is from the Sunday Times, which backed the leave campaign.

ScrubTheDecks · 29/07/2018 10:37

OK, there are big gaps in those shelves. Which are all chiller produce so mostly not stuff we can stockpile. And nine are actually ‘empty’ there are different things to buy. I don’t relish living on tinned mince , tinned carrots and sardines, but if that is what happens so be it. I don’t want a cupboard full of stuff I wouldn’t want to eat up afterwards! I’d rather eat fresh swedes than tinned carrots, for example.

I would make sure I had a supply of specialist medicines if I needed them, I am going to get a good supply of Colombian coffee, and I might well do a red wine booze cruise. Because even if the supply holds up it seems likely prices will rocket.

www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/jul/29/no-deal-brexit-food-supply-chain-crisis

We only produce 40% of the food we need.

Window boxes of salad arent going to help much.

The govt isn’t talking to the farmers, it’s bonkers.

I just don't understand this attitude. I can't get my head around people being willing to undergo this enormous drop in living standards for no reason I can determine other than some vague notion of 'sovereignty'.

I'm a Remainer through and through but have the same view as that. I'm just not a person who panics. Because just say I have a couple of crap meals... so what, I'll make sure I stock up on Gin and that's about the only thing Grin

GoneWishing · 29/07/2018 11:26

Would the folks who have to stockpile.be happy to dish out some stockpiled stuff,in an emergency,to those who can't stockpile for various reasons ?

I'm considering making a food bag just pre-Brexit to a friend who is on very low income and already has had to rely on food bank at times (thanks to UC). She has special dietary needs, so will struggle more even if there are quite limited food supply issues, as can't easily do the "if there's no product X, I'll buy product Y". I'm hoping I can get her to take it by explaining it's just to help my own anxiety over the whole situation!

JustHereForThePooStories · 29/07/2018 11:28

Well, Brits, the great news is that's your old passports are high in nutrition so you can chomp away on those while you wait for your new blue ones to arrive.

Eat your pet passports too, as you won't be able to use those anymore or take your dog abroad.

noblegiraffe · 29/07/2018 11:34

I’m thinking back to the happy time when I thought that if we hadn’t hammered out a reasonable deal by March 29th, that we couldn’t find a reasonable solution that everyone was moderately happy with, then we would stay in the EU.

Dandygal1976 · 29/07/2018 11:38

I always stockpile and everyone thinks I am nuts. But, it is non perishable and should anything happen everyone will come here! ha ha. I watched a program once of what would happen if we lost electricity for a week (terrorist attack etc) and it was worrying.

Gabilan · 29/07/2018 11:40

Want to take bets on how long before people start eating pets rather than just the passport?

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 29/07/2018 11:43

I shall be retaining PestDog for his vermin catching and burglar scaring abilities.

Shame the hamster doesn't have much practical application, but there's not much meat on her anyway Wink

Already happens in some areas due to storms. I've gone four days before in a rural area. Mind you, rural areas tend to be a bit more prepared and someone dug out a generator to keep the village supplied for a few hours a day. I could see riots happening in cities when people realised there's no CCTV and not much control. Lest anyone think this is scaremongering, I'm not saying this will happen because of Brexit. And also, 2011. We have form.

Gabilan · 29/07/2018 11:47

She'd be more of an amuse bouche. It's rabbits and chickens I'd be worried about. I live in a pheasant shooting area. I'm vegetarian but if I get desperate I suppose I could try hitting the fuckers instead of avoiding them.

MrsAidanTurner · 29/07/2018 11:50

I must admit after thread on this talking about dead space under the bath.. I have been thinking about basics like paracetamol.. I get 20p packet whenever I shop, I may start to get more children medicine. And loo roll. I only like one type so may start to stock pile that.. Tin of tuna2, seeds..

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 29/07/2018 11:51

I'm a (rubbish) vegetarian but if it came to it I'd be out shooting pheasants to feed the dog.

Shame I live in the inner city where guns are frowned upon and pheasants are non existent. At least the gangs will be well fed, if they stop shooting at each other and start shooting foxes and pigeons Grin

Dandygal1976 · 29/07/2018 11:51

Gabilan - it is not just that, the cashpoints won't work, you will not get water supply etc (if it is a large area taken out). It was eye opening.

MrsAidanTurner · 29/07/2018 11:52

We really need new front door. Perhaps we should get one..

JustHereForThePooStories · 29/07/2018 11:54

@Gabilan - funnily enough, rabbit meat has very little nutritional value for humans. Think I read before that if you ate nothing but rabbit, you’d die within a few days.

They’ll only be of value for their pelts, in New World.

MrsAidanTurner · 29/07/2018 11:56

madelainemaxwell

Our country had a vote and whether you wanted in or out it's what the UK decided.
We should now all be on same page to get a good deal. Why wouldn't anyone want us to dm get good deal??

MrsAidanTurner · 29/07/2018 11:57

What about rat pelts it's the only creature in supply round here.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 29/07/2018 12:01

@JustHere That's a myth thewannabehomesteader.com/why-rabbit-meat-is-not-the-best-survival-food/

bellinisurge · 29/07/2018 12:03

@MrsAidanTurner - I hope we get a good deal. I am making sensible plans for our household in case we don't.

MrsAidanTurner · 29/07/2018 12:04

It's good the government is making plan b its the government bloody job.

I wonder if Tony had made a plan b back whenever.. When his government said 200 people may want to come to the UK when work restrictions were lifted and yet millions came.. whether we would have brexit now.

Seasawride · 29/07/2018 12:04

Oh for gods sake of course not. Get a bloody grip on yourselves.
